Free coffee at Barnes and Noble

Let's face facts: today's all about the iPhone. (Yes, we're already there, waiting in line.) Non-iPhone stories will be few and far between. Even the following story has an iPhone connection—it's madness! Right then. Barnes and Noble has a begun a clever little promotion to get you into their stores (and hopefully buying their books): free coffee. Who doesn't like coffee, and free coffee at that?

You’re playing a lot of mobile games on the subway, aren’t you?

You're on the subway on the way to work. It's not a long trip, maybe 15 to 20 minutes long if you're coming in from an outer borough. You have to kill the time somehow lest you be alone in your thoughts for a few moments. What do you do? If we're to believe a new survey, then you' may well whip out your phone to play a video game. Back in the day, people would have had a paperback or magazine handy. Times, they are a....

  • Review: Doxie document scanner

    Review: Doxie document scanner

This is a great scanner for occasional scanning of single pages. It doesn't have an auto document feeder, so you're not going to use it for large scanning jobs. You'll use it to scan your W-2, or old family photos, or that newspaper clipping your mom saved from when you did something famous in your home town. For $129 it provides a good deal of functionality, including the ability to send your scanned items directly to a number of online services (Flickr, Picnik, etc). It's small and lightweight, which makes it a no-brainer to take with you on the go; but the form factor does present some placement issues.

  • DIY: the laser jacket

    DIY: the laser jacket

So somehow, you've ended up with 200 laser pointers. What on earth do you do with 200 laser diodes? Well, you could combine them all into one super laser and write your name on the moon. Or you could find 200 sharks and.. never mind. Or, you could wire them all together into a jacket, and wear it to the mall. That's it!

  • PS3 Linux class action lawsuit coming at ya

PS3 Linux class action lawsuit coming at ya

Looks like Sony now finds itself on the business end of a class-action lawsuit. You'll recall that a recent PS3 firmware update removed the "Other OS" option from the console, preventing owners from installing Linux (which was one of the selling points when the PS3 first came out in 2006). The removal upset one California gentleman, who filed suit with the note "Sony's decision to force users to disable the Other OS function was based on its own interest and was made at the expense of its customers."

New Xbox 360 bundle incoming? Smaller, 250GB HDD, Project Natal built-in.

Full credit to Microsoft: it's still got people paying top-dollar for its nearly five-year-old Xbox 360. It's gonna need to sweeten the deal, though, to keep people a-buyin'. Like, say, a new bundle? Maybe a bundle with a thinner 360 and built-in Project Natal? Sounds about right.

  • South Korea imposes midnight gaming ban to prevent addiction

South Korea imposes midnight gaming ban to prevent addiction

The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism doesn't want the country's youth becoming addicted to video games, particularly MMOs, so it's imposing a ban of sorts. Starting in the second half of this year, underage gamers will find their Internet connections disabled for six hours every night, either from midnight to 6am, 1am to 7am, or 2am to 8am. The idea is to ween kids off these games, by hook or by crook, before they become addicted. Gotta start somewhere, I suppose.

  • Switzerland approaches complete ban on violent video games

Switzerland approaches complete ban on violent video games

That's funny, not one hour ago I mentioned that Australia had embraced the idea that adults have the capacity to make decisions vis-à-vis buying violent video games. Good ol' Switzerland, though, the darling of Europe, has passed a law essentially outlawing violent video games. I'd feign, well, not anger, but something, but it's Switzerland: how can you get mad at those guys?
