Switzerland approaches complete ban on violent video games

That's funny, not one hour ago I mentioned that Australia had embraced the idea that adults have the capacity to make decisions vis-à-vis buying violent video games. Good ol' Switzerland, though, the darling of Europe, has passed a law essentially outlawing violent video games. I'd feign, well, not anger, but something, but it's Switzerland: how can you get mad at those guys?

  • A cornucopia of Apple lawsuits

    A cornucopia of Apple lawsuits

Apple doesn't like HTC, not one bit. In fact, Apple recently filed a lawsuit against the Taiwan-based company, alleging that it has infringed 20 iPhone-related patents. This has already been discussed to death, but it gives us an opportunity to look at some of Apple's other forays into the world of lawsuits. It's terribly exciting.

AppGate: App review sites ask for money in exhange for reviews

In the fine tradition of lazily naming any sort of controversy after Watergate, I hereby present AppGate. It seems that certain iPhone App developers are paying low-rent "review" sites for favorable reviews, thereby creating the false impression that their App is cool and everything.

Quick hands on with the Vizit cellular connected touchscreen photo frame

The Vizit photo frame is an interesting twist on conventional photo frames. Forget about setting it up over Wi-Fi or USB—this thing connects to AT&T’s network and pulls in photos sent via e-mail, MMS, browser upload, Photobucket, and Flickr. I had a chance to play around with a beta version of the frame, so this isn’t [...]

PUMA to announce a sports-centric, solar powered cell phone next week

We’ve known since around October of last year that PUMA was working on a branded phone with Sagem (the same folks who make the Porsche-branded phones) – but outside of the fact that it was in the works, there wasn’t much else known about it. PUMA just put up a teaser site for the phone, but [...]

The Twitter- and Netflix-equipped Vizio HDTVs are now shipping

Vizio announced the 1080p LED XVT line way back in June of '09 and they are just now starting to ship. These are the sets that come with that oh-so-awesome QWERTY remote to work the TV's collection of Internet apps. It's too bad that most owners will still need a cable or satellite box because this TV line is nearly an all-in-one solution for home entertainment.

Acer has an e-reader, app store, and Chrome OS netbook prepped for ‘10, working on a tablet

Acer has big plans for 2010. Sometime within the coming months the world's second largest computer maker will launch a 6-inch monochrome ebook reader, cross-platform application store and a Chrome OS netbook -- along with probably a crapton and a half of computers under its Acer, Gateway, and EMachines brands. And yes, the company is working on a tablet computer says the president of Acer's IT Products division. Tablet!

Here’s a 1990 CES photo set for your amusement

Another year, another CES. The show this year wasn’t that different then previous years with some new stuff, a lot of old crap, and nerds all over Vegas. Hopefully you followed us around the show floor via our massively-successful Livestream feed. If not, stay tuned. We’re going to cut a lot of the fluff and repost [...]

    AT&T drops Tiger Woods sponsorship

Gotta hand it to Bloomberg for this riveting one-sentence article written by two people. “AT&T Inc. is ending its sponsorship agreement with golfer Tiger Woods, company spokesman Michael Coe said in an e-mailed statement.” I don’t recall seeing Woods in any TV or print commercials for AT&T but he definitely had a few big, fat AT&T logos on his golf bag. The company still has Luke Wilson and the iPhone, so sleep easy, friends.

California approves new TV energy regulation: Energy consumption to be cut in half by 2012

Looks like California approved the new energy standards for televisions. The Consumer Electronics Association is predictably upset, whinging on about “constraining” innovation and choice, while environmental groups are predictably thrilled. The state's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, hailed the decision, and said that it will make California a “world-leader” in “the fight against climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

    Eye-Fi goes FTP

The Eye-Fi card is famous for being a cool, fun way to upload, inadvertently, images of you and your friends naked or on the toilet. Now, however, you can upload those naked photos to your local FTP/FTPS server. This service allows you to bypass standard photo-sharing sites like Flickr and dump your stuff up unfettered by the limitations placed upon us by photo sites.
