Verizon LG Ally delayed until May 27th?
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsIf you trekked down to the local Verizon store for an early morning camp-out in order to pick up an LG Ally yesterday, you might have left a bit upset — and empty handed. While Verizon initially said that they’d have’m in stock by the 20th, they were a no show. If this note purportedly [...] -
Anti-CrunchDeal: Refurb Dell XPS M1530 Core 2 Duo notebook for only $4,536
Posted on April 1, 2010 | No Comments
Whoa there, Dell. This is one hell of deal you have here in the Dell Outlet. A used XPS M1530 notebook for $4,536? It better come bundled with a used Mercedes-Benz because there is nothing about this notebook that's worth over $800 anyway.

How to make a busted iPhone beautiful
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No Comments
There’s an excellent how-to over in the MacRumors forums that details how an enterprising individual purchased a scratched up iPhone with a broken screen off of eBay and restored it to its former glory without sinking too much money into the project.

Wii laptop hack is about 2.5 inches thick
Posted on February 15, 2010 | No Comments
Of all the consoles to stuff into a laptop form factor, the Wii’s minute size makes it as good a candidate as any. And while Wii laptop mods have been done before, this most recent one has the distinction of being relatively thin at just over 2.5 inches.

Why wait for the Nexus One Android OTA update when you can have it now?
Posted on February 3, 2010 | No Comments
Patience is a virtue, but as tech fanatics who lap up the latest in hardware and software, we've not enirely familiar with that concept. So when we heard that it could take up to a few days for the Nexus One Android OTA update, it was a little disheartening. We want it now! And thanks to some clever folks over at Android Forums, we can get it right this moment. It just takes some simple tinkering and you should be good to go.

Wi-Fi and OLED touchscreen-equipped Samsung CL80 P&S leaks out before CES
Posted on December 28, 2009 | No Comments
It looks like Samsung has at least two CES-bound cameras. We already saw product shots of the NX-10 and now here's pics of the pocketable CL80. Depending on its MSRP it might be a hot cam, too.

Android 2.1 moves down food chain, ROM now ported to G1 (update: hoax)
Posted on December 15, 2009 | No Comments
Future, meet your past. The fine lads at xda-developers forums have ported the Android 2.1 ROM -- you know, the updated OS from Nexus One that everyone's been talking about lately -- all the way to the original G1. Right now it's being dubbed version 0.9999 since it's still lacking A2SD, CompCache, and SWAP... and if you're feeling confused by the terminology, it might be best to not try this at home just yet. Creator Teh Dust has also removed a few things for the sake of making it more lightweight, including Car Home, Live Boot, and high resolution wallpapers / apps that don't jive with the G1 anyway. Willing, curious, and wanting to impress your Droid-carrying friends? File's hiding in plain sight, waiting for you.
Update: Quoth the raven, 'twas a hoax and nothing more.

Nokia N900 glitch leads to useful portrait mode, caught on video
Posted on November 29, 2009 | No CommentsFile this under "it's not a bug, it's a feature" if true. According to Guyver at the maemo.org forums, some glitch in the OS caused his Nokia N900 to switch into portrait mode for everything, not just dialer and photo apps as previously allowed. We'd love to eliminate the need for two hands to run our favorite chunks of mobile software, but so far we haven't been able to recreate his trick. Try it at home if you'd like by tilting the device to launch the phone app, then sliding up the screen and closing the app. Perhaps the gang at Espoo can turn this into a legit update -- if they're awesome people, of course. Video after the break.Continue reading Nokia N900 glitch leads to useful portrait mode, caught on video

Palm Pre backups can be easily overwritten by a replacement device: replacers beware!
Posted on November 21, 2009 | No CommentsWe've just been alerted to an unsettling trend in Palm Pre land, where strings of replacement devices are a bit too common for comfort: some users have been losing their Palm Profile backup, or a large majority of it, once they pair up their new device. The big issue is that since this problem is rather sporadic, Palm doesn't seem to have a good way to deal with it yet -- the trend in the forums seems to be a complaint sent to Palm, followed up by word of an inability to restore data from Palm a few weeks later. Lucky for these hapless Pre replacers, a particularly repeat offender (working on his seventh Pre) has posted instructions for making sure this sort of data loss doesn't happen to you. His theory is that it has something to do with a refurbished device loaded with an old firmware trying to sync with the newer-firmware-styled backup your dead device made with Palm's servers, and messing stuff up in the process. He recommends walking out of the store before Sprint tries to trip you up, and upgrading and wiping the phone before reactivating it and syncing. Sounds foolproof enough, right? Let's hope.

HTC HD2 ripped to shreds, probably in the name of science
Posted on November 10, 2009 | No CommentsHello there, HD2. To be honest, it's a bit soon in our relationship to be seeing all your inner workings -- not that we mind. The folks on the xda-developers forums have done the duty of tearing down HTC's impressively skinned Windows Mobile 6.5 device. Not much to glean from the snapshots, but if you do harbor some strange technologically-inclined curiosity and would never consider ripping up the phone yourself, hit up the read link for more pictures.

The G1 could get Donut, says notorious Android hacker
Posted on August 19, 2009 | No Comments
I’m a n00b to the whole Android scene; I make no bones about it. But I have been lurking the XDA forums for the last couple months and I feel comfortable rooting my Android devices (except the Hero) and swapping between “cooked ROMs” from various hackersdevs to get the latest and greatest features. So when the Interwebs started freaking out over the G1’s lack of memory, which we all knew from the beginning, but that it would hinder the G1 from getting future updates, I started to worry. Alas, those closer to the realm of Android have shed a bit of light on what G1 owners could/should expect going forward regarding those nasty rumors about not getting Donut or Éclair. Mr Wimberly of Android and Me fame did a bit of digging and it seems as though we may have jumped the gun. Maybe.

Call us skeptical but we're not quite sure this is legit. A regular on myDroidWorld's forums just posted a bunch of screenshots that are supposed to be a Droid running Froyo. There are shots of the app launcher, new Car Home, the camera, and updated search options. Really everything but the About Phone screen which will show the phone's model number, firmware, and kernal version -- you know, everything that would confirm his claims. So yeah, this might be the first look at the Droid running Android 2.2 or, well, it's not.
