iPhone 4’s yellow spot issue goes away with a bit of time?
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsWe're starting to hear a few reports of the dreaded yellow spots disappearing from the iPhone 4's display after a day or so of use. Interestingly, someone posting on the AppleInsider forums seems to know why:
If this can be trusted, it's very good news for those afflicted -- though hopefully Apple will keep to its usually painless replacement policy for defective phones either way. We are still seeing some mentions of the spots sticking around, fading in and out based on the heat of the phone, but we'll give it another day or two to really see how much of a problem is going to be. Let us know how yours fares.Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow "blotches" will disappear. How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple.

Steve Jobs at D8: Foxconn, iPhone prototype, TVs, and more
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsIn case you hadn't heard, Steve Jobs got downright conversational last night at D8, riffing on questions from Walt, Kara, and the attending audience of elites. You can hit up the entire liveblog for a timestamped play by play, or browse through some of the highlights below.
- On TV: 'no one wants to buy a box'
- On Foxconn: 'We're all over this'
- On lost iPhone 4G prototype: it's an 'amazing' story
- iPhone OS 'started on a tablet'
- 'There might be' advantages to two iPhone carriers in US
We put some extra scintillating quotes after the break to shield the eyes of your children. Just a note, however: all of these are paraphrased quotes typed live as Steve was speaking, and not to be construed as the verbatim Word of Steve Jobs, though the gist is certainly there.Continue reading Steve Jobs at D8: Foxconn, iPhone prototype, TVs, and more

Some Foxconn employees get 20% raise

It’s important to note that this is a cyclical was planned months in advance the suicides are ancillary to the eleven suicides thus far. “I don’t think this will impact Hon [...] -
Foxconn’s CEO speaks out against suicide, 11th employee dead
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsA cluster of suicides has hit Foxconn, painting the factory in a horrible light and essentially drawing outrage just about everyone. Yesterday Foxconn CEO, Gou Tai-ming, officially spoke out against the suicides and today another potential suicide occurred at about 6:30 AM in Shenzhen. Those are the facts and it’s a tragic situation. Something in the [...] -
Don’t cry for the workers at Foxconn
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsI’ve been interested in gadget manufacturing for a while now and, as I reported a few months ago, things are pretty bad but they’ve been worse. Now, however, we’re seeing clusters of suicides at Foxconn as well as an undercover “report” from Foxconn’s “Hell Factory.” I’m calling bull. First, consider that Foxconn has 400,000 employees in [...] -
Microsoft in hot water over China factory conditions
Posted on April 14, 2010 | No CommentsYet another scandal coming out of China relating to its factories. Last time it was Apple that got in trouble, now it's Microsoft. An undercover investigation, carried out by the National Labor Committee over a period of three years, discovered that several factories there, including ones used by Microsoft to produce things like webcams and mice, were treating their workers like garbage. “We are like prisoners. It seems like we live only to work. We do not work to live. We do not live a life, only work.”

Foxconn’s suppliers denies iPad delay rumors (big surprise)
Posted on March 3, 2010 | No Comments
There's been some unfounded rumors swirling around the Internet water cooler the last few days that Apple's initial shipment of iPads will only be around 300,000. That's far less than the expected numbers of 600,000-700,000, which would no doubt cause fanboy riots and shenanigans at Apple Stores nationwide. John called BS on these rumors a few days back and now Foxconn's suppliers has done the same.

How Apple kills hardware innovation
Posted on February 1, 2010 | No Comments
If there are two things you can count on its Death and the propensity of Asian electronics manufacturers to capitalize on a rising trend. In short, what we buy Asia makes and Asia is very happy about the iPad. And this chain of events, in turn, destroys hardware innovation.
First we have this AP report about accessories makers. We haven't posted very many iPad accessories since the launch but trust me, we've been inundated. Every accessory and app company worth its salt has tasked its befuddled PR flacks to send us emails with subjects like "Supertech creates first iPad holster for cowboys" complete with rendered images of ridiculous accessories. Why do they do this? Because all they really have to do is make a call to a factory in Shenzhen and have a planeload made in a few weeks. It's that easy. This ties up resources, however, discouraging other manufacturers to try to make accessories for other devices.

CrunchGear in China: Getting From There to Here
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No CommentsFor a long time my concept of sourcing – basically order fulfillment – was all wrong. When I ordered a USB charger or headphones for my phone or MP3 player, I thought some little old lady in Texas headed over to a warehouse, put the item in a box, gummed on a few stamps, and [...] -
Chinese iPhone to sell 1 million units first year
Posted on July 28, 2009 | No Comments
iPhonAsia has some information on China's exciting WiFi-crippled iPhone. The device will cost less than the smuggled, grey-market iPhones currently available in China and will include special apps for the Chinese consumer.
Considering Apple and China's track record these last few weeks I wonder how much good will Apple last left in the land of the violent Foxconn security team.
