Plant face mask takes cutting down on your carbon footprint to the extreme

If the volcano's in Iceland keep pumping out ash, we may all need to start wearing face masks to protect our delicate lung tissues. Of course, standard fabric or paper masks aren't enough for some people, as physical filtration may not be enough in some cases. So you have this concept face mask from designer Robert Ortega.

FoxSoccer.tv learns that Web sites work best when they’re actually online

Call me crazy, but Web sites usually work best when they're online. Nobody knows this better than we do here at CrunchGear, where the site is down a good 20 percent of the time. But at the very least you're not paying for our crummy service, unlike the poor FoxSoccer.tv customers. Fox wants $45 per season for online access to a whole host of content, including live games from all over the world. It's really not a bad service when it works, but when it doesn't work people freak out, and rightfully so.

  • That student spying case is now officially boring

That student spying case is now officially boring

Remember the story about the school district that spied on its students at home? Well it just got boringer. Now that the lawyers are involved and some of the IT guys have been put on leave, this he said/she said/school officials saw story has just jumped the shark. To recap: The Lower Merion School District gave their students MacBooks. The MacBooks had a theft protection system built in designed to capture images of the laptop's surroundings in the case of a theft. The school district instead took pictures of a kid eating Mike&Ikes at home and accused him of being a pill popper. Essentially, the school spied on a student at home and is claiming it was only trying to recover a stolen laptop. As we later learned, however, some school officials enjoyed turning on the cameras just to freak the kids out, a decidedly Orwellian thing.

Look, up in the sky. It’s 3 more Iranian satellites.

It's your daily space (Space?) update. The subject today: Iran, a country we in the United States are programmed to hate (I've never met an Iranian, but I'm sure they're friendly people), may well launch three new satellites in the near future. Be afraid, I guess.

    CrunchDeals: Asus 1920×1080 23-inch monitor for $158

I'll start the day of with a quick and easy CrunchDeal for y'all. It's an Asus 23-inch widescreen monitor, with a 1920x1080 resolution, for $158 after some sort of rebate. I know $158 for a 23-inch monitor is nothing to freak out over, but most of the ones I found on Newegg didn't quite reach that 1920x1080 mark. Being that it's Asus, as Devin told us the other day, we know it's not junk. That is all. (Don't click “read more,” since there's nothing more to read!)

Proposed law would give White House ‘cybersecurity emergency’ powers over the Internet

Internet King and America's news editor Matt Drudge is freaking out right now, complete with his trademark scare quotes. (I swear, you could probably write a thesis about how Drudge influences the American media.) There's a bill that's currently floating around the U.S. Senate that would, in times of emergency, put the Internet, in a sense, in control of the White House. And then the government will make you eat fruits and vegetables! Tyranny!

Snow Leopard will be out soon, no need to freak out

Here's some advice to all of you guys who are trying to keep up-to-date on the latest Snow Leopard news: don't go anywhere near a computer for the next week or so. There were rumors last week that Snow Leopard build 10A432 was slated for gold master, but then you read message board thread after message board there wherein people complain about little glitches here and there. Hardly a sign of Apple polish! Then the disc artwork changes from a snow leopard theme to a space theme, à la Leopard, and there's even more confusion.
