Android Market hits 20,000 apps, over 60 percent free
Posted on December 15, 2009 | No CommentsQuantity rarely equals quality, of course, but it's still fairly notable that the Android Market has now managed to top 20,000 apps just a little over a year after it opened its doors -- Apple's App Store had over 50,000 apps a year into its existence, for those keeping track. Even more interesting, however, is the distribution of free and paid apps in the Market. According to AndroLib, fully 62.2% of the apps available are completely free, compared to just 37.8% that are paid apps. That's in stark contrast to the App Store, which now has over 100,000 individual apps, of which (by some recent counts) a hefty 77% are paid applications -- although only 30% of total App Store downloads are for paid apps. What does it all mean? Well, that's open for debate. But one thing's for sure: the rest of the app store contenders are going to have to work some special pie chart magic to come out looking good in this battle.Android Market hits 20,000 apps, over 60 percent free originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 14:38:00 EST. Apps of the Month: Best iPhone Apps of November
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No CommentsLast month we launched Apps of the Month: a series dedicated to profiling iPhone apps that you should actually buy, instead of the ones that simply got the most hype. This is a tough task, given the 100,000+ apps on the store and the fact that discovery is an absurdly difficult task, even for those [...] -
Has Tapjoy solved monetization of free apps on the iPhone and Android?
Posted on October 28, 2009 | No CommentsTapjoy, the small development shop that brought us the incredible TapDefense for the iPhone [iTunes link], has quietly built out an extremely strong toolset to provide monetization options for app developers. Through two strong offerings, they claim to increase ad revenue for free apps by more than 250%. I first met them at the TechCrunch50 [...] -
In-App Purchase In Free Apps: A Shot Across The Bow of iPhone Piracy?
Posted on October 15, 2009 | No CommentsJust hours ago, Apple made an announcement that has developers everywhere dancing down their collective, metaphorical street: In-App Purchase is now good to go in free applications. This, of course, comes just months after Apple essentially told a room full of journalists that such ideas were nonsense – that free apps should always remain absolutely [...] -

First GSM Palm Pre now on sale in Germany, with new Euro-specific apps in tow
Posted on October 13, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Palm, O2, GSM, Announcements, webOS
We knew it was coming, and here it is -- the glorious first showing of the Palm Pre in its GSM garb. From today, our Deutsch comrades can grab a Pre and do whatever they want to do to it, courtesy of O2, its exclusive German supplier. The device will set you back €481 without contract, with the O2 My Handy option letting you finance it via 24 monthly payments of €20. Check out the online store link below for full details and available calling plans. Pre Thinking have also noted the arrival of two new free apps in the Pre catalog -- ran and VZ-Netzwerke, both in German -- and the likely prospect of even more coming along as the Pre starts its long-awaited rollout across Europe over the next few days.

Palm: Free Apps For The Web, Free Development For Open Source, And Free Phones!
Posted on October 5, 2009 | No CommentsI’m here in San Francisco for a meeting Palm has called to give its newest employees, Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer, who both came over from Mozilla, a chance to talk a bit about the state of the webOS platform. The two, along with Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein and some other executives spoke at length about the hardware, the platform, and the plan going forward. The message was pretty clear: Web development is the future, and openness is the way. They also made a few big announcements.

Paid Apps for Palm App Catalog coming September 24th?
Posted on September 18, 2009 | No CommentsConsidering Palm's lag in getting free apps into their store (there are right around 80 right now), we're not exactly expecting an onslaught once they open up the doors to paid apps. Either way, more apps are more apps, and we're always fans of anything that might make developers some change. After Palm accidentally leaked out v1.2 of their OS a few weeks ago, it was clear that it wouldn't be too much longer before paid apps hit the Pre. Thanks to a leaked table obtained by Digital Daily, we've got a better idea of what the exact date of roll-out might be.

Zune HD Marketplace seeing first apps but will more follow?
Posted on September 17, 2009 | No Comments
The Zune HD has only been out for a day, but apps are already filtering into the Marketplace. So far there are some free apps like weather, a calculator, and a few games available. What do you have to lose, Zune HD owners? Download 'em like you just don't care!
It will be interesting to see the type of apps developers make for the Zune HD. Sure, the Zune HD is as powerful as Sauron, but will there be a wide range of apps and games that will tap the power? The answer probably correlates whether the Zune HD is a success. The App Store took off so quickly because there were already millions of iPhones around the world. Devs may very well watch the Zune HD from afar for a while.

CrunchDeal: Find temporarily free iPhone apps with Twitter
Posted on July 16, 2009 | No CommentsTwitter and the iPhone. They’re both pretty love-it-or-hate-it subjects — but put them together in the right way, and they’re wonderful. Because everyone loves getting stuff for free that they’d normally have to pay for, 148Apps has thrown together a Twitterbot that monitors for premium apps that have dropped down to the gratis zone. Sure, they’re [...]
