My most used gadget: the P-38
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No Comments
I received a P-38 can opener some time during my seventh grade of school. I can't remember exactly why they were given to us (I think my whole class got one, but I'm not sure), nor can I remember exactly why my adolescent self hung on to the little thing. I certainly wasn't opening cans of beans with any regularity. Nonetheless, I kept it on my keyring, and it's on my keyring even today. It has, without any doubt, been the single most useful gadget I've ever owned.

Stream sits still for the camera, shows off its camcorder abilities (video)
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsIn these halcyon days of impromptu Vietnamese gadget reveals, it should come as no surprise that Acer's Stream has gone from FCC filing to hands-on honey in a few days flat. Now it's been the subject of a rather more thorough photo shoot in Ho Chi Minh City, and also was kind enough to share a little footage filmed from its five megapixel camera. Sadly, it's not raw 720p footage that was YouTube'd, so it's perhaps too early to draw conclusions -- but we'll go ahead and say the video doesn't look very good just the same. Still, it looks to be yet another intriguing entry to the Android assault, and we can't wait for the next leak.

Report: Apple Prepping Cheap, Cloud-Based Apple TV For War With Google
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No Comments
The idea of putting iPhone apps on the Apple TV has been something some of us have been thinking about since at least 2008, when the original App Store launched. When rumors were swirling about Google TV, it became an even better idea as the living room was likely to be a new battleground for Apple/Google. And with the unveiling of Google TV last week, it became clear that this would be a next major fight -- provided Apple started taking it seriously. Soon, they will be, if Engadget's sources are correct.
The gadget blog says that a tip they've since confirmed with "a source very close to Apple" suggests that Apple has been working on the next version of the Apple TV. The goods according to them: it will be a very small box (smaller than the current one) with perhaps only outputs for power and TV-out cables. It will run on Apple's new A4 chip (the one found in the iPad and soon the new iPhone). It will still do 1080p video, but may have as little as 16GB of flash memory. That's because the thing will be based around streaming over the cloud (or from other computers in your home) rather than local storage. Most significantly, it will run the iPhone OS.

CSIRO’s patent fight targets more victims: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsIs anyone safe from the wrath of Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization? It's looking unlikely, with the company expanding its patent lawsuit furor to cover three more major players: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile. These three are the latest cherry-picked to be on the receiving end of CSIRO's mighty 802.11a/g patent hammer. Companies like Dell, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all chose to settle rather than challenge this patent bully, giving it the encouragement (and cash) to bring the fight to these three new players, apparently named simply because they sold WiFi devices. Sadly, there are more to come according to Executive Director Niger Poole:
Ever pass on an old WiFi-equipped gadget on eBay or gave it to a friend in exchange for a case of beer? Lord Humongous is coming for you next.I'm not going to be exposing what the legal strategy is to a journalist. There's a legal strategy here that has been thought through very carefully and to a lay person it looks like a pincer movement. You've got court action against upstream chip makers and you've got court action against downstream carriers.

CE-Oh no he didn’t!: Sony’s Sir Howard says ‘when you beat Apple, you’re dominating’
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsSony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has always been delightfully direct, and he didn't hold back at Google's I/O conference: talking about Sony Ericsson with Eric Schmidt during the Google TV launch, Sir Howard noted that the Xperia X10 is the best-selling handset in Japan, and that "when you beat Apple, you're dominating -- it's the new definition." Strong words from a gadget titan -- we'll leave it to you to debate their veracity.CE-Oh no he didn't!: Sony's Sir Howard says 'when you beat Apple, you're dominating' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 14:14:00 EST.
