Arbitron’s Portable People Media 360 uses *cell technology*

Looks like the radio industry (well, pretty much media industry, actually, but I'm pretty sure radio is the biggest user of Arbitron data) has a new people meter up its sleeves. It's called the Portable People Meter 360, and it's designed to make reporting your radio-listening habits all the more easy. It reports to Arbitron HQ using cell technology. Just like you can download books over a cell network on your e-book reader, so, too can you tell The Man that you're listening to The Fan as you sit in traffic on the LIE.

  • Kobo launches e-reader app for Android

Kobo launches e-reader app for Android

Kobo -- perhaps best known for its e-reader tie-up with Borders -- is bringing its platform and bookstore to Android, beating bigger players like Amazon to the game. If you've already got a Kobo account, you can just log in and get instant access to your already-purchased books, but if you're new, you can buy stuff right from your phone; it supports ePub and counts more than two million titles to its library (some of which are free). Strangely, Kobo is circulating a picture of what appears to be a Nokia 5800 with its Android announcement -- but if you can get past that, the app should be available in the Market right now. Follow the break for the full press release.

  • Samsung Captivate is AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S, launching ‘in the coming months’

Samsung Captivate is AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S, launching ‘in the coming months’

So much for the "AT&T refuses to release high-end Android devices" conspiracy theory, eh? T-Mobile had been widely pegged as Samsung's launch partner for the Galaxy S in the States, but AT&T stole its thunder this morning by announcing the Captivate featuring a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.1, 7.2Mbps HSPA, and a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. If it sounds more or less like the European Galaxy S, well, your intuitions are spot-on -- AT&T actually describes the Captivate as "a Galaxy S smartphone." As for media, you can expect a 5 megapixel camera with 720p recording, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and 16GB of onboard storage combined with support for external storage for a total of up to 32GB; you also have 802.11n WiFi and a variety of built-in apps (some of which you'll want, others you won't) like Swype and AT&T Navigator. Unfortunately, this is a little while out yet -- AT&T is only saying that it'll launch "in the coming months" for an undisclosed price -- but we're at least stoked that AT&T's finally fully entrenched in the Android superphone game. Follow the break for the full press release.

Nintendo and Activision bring back Goldeneye~!

Part of me is stoked that GoldenEye is coming back. But then the graphics look like they are ran off of the original N64 graphic engine. So yeah, it's the classic argument between gameplay and eye candy although I could have swore that it was 2010 and that discussion was somewhat moot.

Amazing Twitter World Cup mash-up needs to be seen right now

Whew! Day One of the World Cup is now behind us, and I wanted to take a moment to point y'all in a particularly awesome direction. The Guardian, one of my recommend sites from yesterday's catch-all post, has a truly amazing Twitter mash-up that needs to be seen to be believed. What it does is analyze tweets that occur during a game, then it creates a dynamic chart that corresponds to said tweets.

iPhone 4’s screen may be tough, but don’t think that it’s shatter proof

I'm sure we all know at least 2 or 3 people that have accidentally dropped their iPhone and watched in horror as the screen shattered into so many tiny pieces. It may have even happened to you. So, I'm sure you were pleased when Apple showed off how tough the new screen on the upcoming iPhone 4 was. I mean, they bent it like 30 degrees, fer cryin' out loud! That's like a million more degrees than the previous screen could bend, right? But what they didn't show you was how it handled being dropped from waist height onto the ground. Three times. It took iFix your i to do that, and I've got some bad news: it didn't survive.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 ‘Rockstar’ contest wraps up, neat apps ensue

The success of Windows Phone 7 as a commercially viable mobile platform will ultimately depend on a great many things, but one of the biggest factors might be its chops as a gaming setup -- so naturally, we're excited to see each and every WP7 game that gets previewed right now. In March, Microsoft kicked off its so-called Rockstar competition, where student teams competed to make awesome apps (games or otherwise) for the platform in their choice of Silverlight or XNA -- and the results of the competition are finally in. Two of the top three winners were games, and the grand champion was a game by the name of -- wait for it -- "Droid." Members of the team are receiving $8,000 plus a Windows Phone, and while none of these apps are the most polished things in the world, it's a promising sign that these students were able to come in fresh on a brand new platform and produce solid version 1.0 software in less than three months' time. Hit up Microsoft's Windows Blog for the full list of winners.

Your first 3D PS3 games launch tomorrow, including Wipeout HD

OK, Wipeout HD is a fine, fine game, but how will it look in 3D? Probably disappointing, if only because it's going to have to be run in a rubbish resolution in order for the PS3 to create the stereoscopic image. Kvetching aside, Sony will release four stereoscopic 3D games for the PS3 tomorrow: Wipeout HD, Super Stardust, PAIN, and Motor Storm Pacific Rift. You will, of course, need a 3D TV to appreciate the extra dimensionality.

  • Skype eager to work with Apple FaceTime, pretty much anyone else

Skype eager to work with Apple FaceTime, pretty much anyone else

We're still playing the wait-and-see game when it comes to Skype on webOS and Windows Phone 7, but it looks as if to-be iPhone 4 owners won't have to wait long before Skype-based video chatting becomes a reality... if Skype has its way, that is. According to someone on the inside quoted over at Pocket-Lint, Skype "would welcome the opportunity to work with Apple," specifically in reference to integrating FaceTime capabilities into the firm's own app. The mystery man also affirmed that Skype would "welcome the opportunity to work with Apple to bring mobile video calling not only to our many millions of Skype users on iPhone around the world, but also to the countless more making video calls on desktops, TVs and other connected devices." 'Course, there's no specific time frame given, and only Jobs knows if the two companies have said a word to one another about making this happen. One thing's for sure, though -- enabling FaceTime usage within Skype would suddenly made the iPhone 4's video calling abilities a whole lot more appealing. And by "appealing," we mean "useful."
