Is this not the greatest iPod speaker you have ever seen?
Posted on August 18, 2009 | No CommentsThe only reason I'm writing about this is because it looks ridiculous. It's the “Retro Cassette Stereo Mini Speaker for iPod/iPhone,” and it's exactly as it sounds. Plug your iPod in there, and off you go.

PXP-900 handheld ditches the UMD drive, and the PSP
Posted on April 29, 2009 | 1 Comment
A new PSP may well be on the horizon, but it looks like the knock-off business is still going strong with the classic model, and it's kicked out one of its most faithful / blatant homages to date with this new so-called PXP-900. While it doesn't do anything crazy like actually play PSP games, you can apparently make use of the included emulator to play NES, GameBoy, SNES, and Genesis games -- even including those rare few 32X games, from the sound of it. Otherwise, you can expect the usual basic PMP functionality, along with a 2GB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, a TV out port, an FM tuner, and your choice of four different colors -- all for the low, low price of $89.99.

Nintendo’s Game Boy turns 20
Posted on April 23, 2009 | No CommentsIn case you hadn't heard, Nintendo's trend-setting handheld, the Game Boy, just had its 20th birthday -- and that's no small thing for a game console. We won't bore you with stories from our childhood about wasted time and missed opportunities spent chasing the dragon that was Tetris, but we will entertain the hell out of you with this vintage ad touting the system's launch from way back in the totally excellent year of 1989. We know what you're thinking: does the robot create the kid or just warp him there? And if he does create him, does that mean he's some kind of metallic god? And does that mean that the kid kills god? And... why is the robot dancing? Hey -- now you're playing with power.Filed under: Gaming

OpenBerry DIY messenger heavy on style, won’t replace your smartphone
Posted on March 20, 2009 | No CommentsLooking for a weekend DIY project? Using a 26-key ButtonShield keyboard module and salvaging parts from his Open Source GameBoy project, Liquidware Antipasto blogger intheblitz has created the OpenBerry, a Arduino-based mobile messenger that's maybe one-half part BlackBerry and seven parts great icebreaker at parties (the kind of parties we go to, at least). Right now the functionality is minimal -- it sends and receives messages synced to your laptop via a XBee module. The interface is also lacking, but a GUI is in apparently the works. See the device for yourself in the video after the break.Continue reading OpenBerry DIY messenger heavy on style, won't replace your smartphone

World of Wacraft, Second Life could face lawsuit from little known virtual world Web site
Posted on March 12, 2009 | No CommentsFrom the frivolous lawsuit department: The folks behind Worlds.com are looking to sue the likes of World of Warcraft and Second Life for infringing on one of their longstanding patents that covers “virtual worlds” or somesuch. While that may seem pretty ludicrous, keep in mind that a similar lawsuits, against City of Heroes' NCSoft, was filed in a plaintiff-friendly district in Texas. Best case scenario for the Worlds.com folks is that Activision Blizzard and Co. have to license “virtual worlds” as an already-patented concept from them, which would means serious money.

Hearst tries to revive dying magazine business with electronic reader
Posted on February 27, 2009 | No CommentsAll I have to say to Hearst is “Good luck, bro.” The flatlining publisher, which produces magazines such as Popular Mechanics, Esquire and Cosmopolitan, has revealed that it's working on an e-reader. The idea, of course, is to cut down the cost of creating a magazine—all that paper, ink, storage, delivery, gas, etc. adds up, especially in an environment when ad sales are way down—without sacrificing that “magazine” feel. Too bad it's doomed, and does, indeed, sacrifice that “feel.”

Songsmith makes you calm, fitter, healthier and more productive
Posted on January 29, 2009 | No Comments
While this could have been anything from Kid A, this is actually a version of "Creep" reworked by Microsoft Songsmith and the peppy beats could potentially completely cure the melancholy infused into countless proto-Goths by this moody yet charming band over the years.
The strange thing is this: SongSmith actually brings out some of the original music here but the quality here is nill. It reminds me of chiptunes. I once heard "Closing Time" done on a Gameboy's audio processor and the song, which is a bit schmaltzy in the first place, sounded like one of the songs the Music Department would would generate for Hate Week in 1984.

Should we expect a new Final Fantasy XIII trailer in five days?
Posted on January 22, 2009 | No CommentsGo ahead and visit FinalFantasy13.com right now. A five-day countdown will greet you, promising a “new vision,” which several folks have interpreted to mean a new trailer. (“New vision = new trailer.”) There's even some good old fashioned evidence to support this assumption.
I don't think you are. If you're willing to plop down $14.99 for some red hot stickers then I suspect you might be, however, and you'd do well to do so before any one of us decides you're too chicken.
