Palm Pre plays Need for Speed, undercover (video)

While Palm's Pre is many things to many people it still can't game. Oh sure, it'll play Magic Fortune Ball like a champ but when it comes to intensive 3D action the Pre is as helpless as a would-be terrorist trying to ignite his underwear. See, webOS and the Mojo SDK currently can't exploit the GPU the way other smartphone platforms can. Rewind a few weeks, however, and we're reminded of a video showing EA's Need for Speed Undercover running impossibly smooth on a Pre. At the time, the video and claims of the device running Flash were shot down as fake largely due to the accompanying screen caps of the purportedly new App Catalog. Well guess what? Those screen caps were vindicated today with the webOS 1.3.5 update that just so happened to launch a new App Catalog matching the leaked images, exactly. That lends credence to the video then doesn't it, while hinting at future apps and games with full OpenGL graphics support. Is that the big reveal at CES alongside enhanced Pre+ and Pixi+ handsets headed to Big Red? We'll find out shortly enough -- until then check the gameplay after the break.

    [Thanks, Brian K.]

You’ll recall the ODROID as a phone-less Android device built for gaming. There’s an 833MHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and HDMI output capable of pushing 720p video to a TV screen.

OnLive demonstrates iPhone app, set to redefine mobile gaming?
Okay, we admit to still being a little bit unsure about OnLive's pledges for high-end, high-resolution, lag-free gaming on any 'ol device with bandwidth, but we want to believe, and so it's with skeptical optimism that we report on news of mobile implementations. The company has demonstrated an iPhone app in which users are able to play against gamers on a PC or on the company's MicroConsole -- despite not having a single button to press. It's interesting stuff but, according to OnLive's CEO Steve Perlman, it'll be awhile before we see this in the wild, as plans for initial mobile apps will be limited to checking game stats and watching live gameplay. However, we presume it'll be a small step from there to flip the switch and two-way communications, meaning that perhaps by the time Modern Warfare 3 hits the wires you can keep gaming even while you're commuting.

Apps of the Month: Best iPhone Apps of October 2009

100,000. That's the number of iPhone apps that have been approved to be sold on Apple's App Store. So how the hell do you decide which ones to buy? Well, you could surf through the App Store's featured list, but that means you're only buying the ones Apple wants you to buy. Or, you could scour through the App Store's Genius recommendations - which are still not perfect in my opinion. To help you with this problem, we're going to create a "best of" list of the iPhone apps we enjoyed the most each month.

Tokyo Game Show: Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 for PS3 (gameplay video)

Koei Tecmo has a giant at this year's Tokyo Game Show, and their flagship title surely is Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 for PS3. It was playable and looked pretty cool. The same is true for Quantum Theory by the way (another Koei Tecmo action game) whose early version was impressive graphics-wise (but pretty buggy unfortunately).

An early look at Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online

If you groaned a groaning groan at the announcement that the PC version of Tiger Woods would be online-only, cheer up. I played around with the beta for a while yesterday and came away impressed. For starters, the fact that it’s played inside a browser is pretty amazing given the level of detail. The graphics, sound, [...]

Review: Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience (PS3)

I’ll save you the trouble of having to read a full review of Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 2, folks. It stinks just like Part 1 stunk. Both parts are ridiculously repetitive and there’s only so much you can take of Rorschach hitting a guy in the nuts, head butting another and breaking some [...]

Review: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra video game (PS3)

I’m not sure where to even begin. In the months leading up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, I made the decision to avoid all trailers for the movie and opt out of all hands on demos of the game. I knew the movie was going to suck, but I had a glimmer of [...]

Shadow Complex achievements splayed out for all to see

I don’t quite see the appeal of Epic and Chair’s upcoming XBLA title Shadow Complex that was announced at E3, but I guess it’s because I think of Gears of War and Unreal Tournament whenever Epic comes up. Nevertheless, August 19th is fast approaching and Epic revealed the achievements today. Hit the jump for the latest gameplay trailer and the 12 achievements for Shadow Complex.

    Where’s Waldo? Ubisoft knows

Launching in September for the Wii, DS, PC and Mac is a childhood favorite of mine, Waldo. Yes, the striped sweater wearing dope is making his triumphant return to the world in the form of a videogame. The question is: where the hell has he been for the last 21 years? I'd like to buy him a beer.

Review: Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid

Mario, Sonic, … Rolando?! Gaming purists: DON’T FREAK OUT. I’m not implying that HandCircus’s phenomenal Rolando series is equivalent to the gaming franchise behemoths, Mario or Sonic. But, I will say that Rolando 2 is as compelling a reason to buy an iPhone as Super Mario 64 once was to buy the N64. Rolando 2: [...]

  • Review: Klonoa for the Wii

    Review: Klonoa for the Wii

To say that Namco’s Klonoa is a throwback would be an understatement. Sure, we first saw Klonoa in 1997 for the PlayStation, but the remake for the Wii is more than just a reboot. It’s a throwback to the golden age of gaming circa 1985. It reminds me of classic side scrolling action that’s since been supplanted by 3D shooters and other abominations that I find myself mildly addicted to. And, no, it’s not a game for kids. In fact, Klonoa gets to an absurd level of difficulty that it makes me want to throw the remote at the TV and stomp out of the room knocking everything down in my path. In other words, I love it and hate it all the same.

Review: Don’t get yourself too hot and bothered by Warpack Grunts

I was pretty excited about Warpack Grunts when I first started playing it. The game seemed to have promise. And for $0.99, I had inklings that it may have been the biggest steal to come to the iPhone since the OS 3.0 launch. While it still lived up to its $1 price, I can’t say [...]
