  • If Nintendo ‘won’ E3 then where does that leave Apple?

If Nintendo ‘won’ E3 then where does that leave Apple?

There were two big pieces of news at E3 last week: the ceaseless march toward 3D gaming and the unrelenting encroachment of motion control upon our lives. I honestly couldn't give a toss about 3D gaming because if I wanted 3D entertainment I'd talk to a human being. Same thing with motion control: it doesn't bother me because I want nothing to do with it (outside of dancing the Macarena when asked to “freestyle”). It'd be like getting angry because it's hot on Venus: what? Exactly. One thing I did notice: what happened to all of that hubbub about “Apple being the new Nintendo”?

Disembodied voice asks: Who will be the ultimate gamer (on season 2 of ‘WCG Ultimate Gamer’)?

The most shocking thing about the news that there will be a second season of "WCG Ultimate Gamer" on SyFy is that there was ever a first season. Could have fooled me. But alas, it has been picked up for another year. This calls for a celebration of some sort. Wee!

  • Are video games art?

    Are video games art?

I'm hesitant to write this because, really, who cares? And I don't mean that in a negative, cynical way at all, but rather in a practical way. Clearly there are people who enjoy playing video games, just as there are people who enjoy creating video games. Why should these people concern themselves with whether or not Roger Ebert, a 67-year-old man who wouldn't know the difference between World of Warcraft and The Legend of Zelda if you smashed his face in with the blunt end of the Master Sword, “approves” of their pastime or vocation?

Man alive, the World of Warcraft economy is quite elastic!

There are people out there who take to World of Warcraft's Auction House like NYU Stern graduates take to Wall Street. The Auction House, for those unawares, is a place where WoW gamers can buy and sell in-game items using in-game currency. It can be incredibly complicated, and there are entire guides dedicated to "playing" the Auction House in order to make money. I've made a fair bit of coin by merely buying items at one, low price, then re-listing them on the Auction House for a new, higher price.
