Acer preparing to flood the MID market this May

As far as Acer is concerned, life is good. Right now, they’re coming off the kind of high only good Q1 results can give, but they’ve got a not-so-secret plan to push even further into the black: Make a new mobile internet device Load it up with the new Shell 4.0 interface Throw in some 3G connectivity for [...]

Exclusive Video: Hands-on With Swype For Android

swpe I've been pretty pumped about Swype's ultra-speedy alternative typing solution for touchscreen devices ever since it first debuted at TechCrunch50 2008. My excitement only grew when it finally made its way to a handset, the Omnia II, just last month - but as I'm not the biggest fan of the OS that powers that device, my thumbs were left twiddling until an Android port was released. Earlier this morning, I got my hands-on a pre-release copy of just that: Swype for Android. So how is it? In a word: Great. If you want more than that, you'll have to dive behind the jump for a hands-on impressions and video.

  • Acer planning ‘five or six’ Android sets in first half of 2010

Acer planning ‘five or six’ Android sets in first half of 2010

Alright, let us try out a new term were testing on you: "Androidsplosion." Does that do anything for you? No? Well, that's pretty much the kind of cluster we're going to be running into with the Android camp come the first half of next year thanks to a rumored bumper crop from HTC, some Sony Ericsson gear, undoubtedly a few lookers out of Moto, and now this gear from Acer. The Liquid's just now starting to make the rounds at retail, but the VP of its Asian handset biz says that it has "five or six" additional models on tap for early 2010 that'll run the gamut from low- to high-end. The third and fourth quarters, it seems, aren't yet firmed up -- so if you thought they were going to turn off the tap after that quick burst, you'd probably be wrong. Sadly, despite the well-stocked roadmap, there aren't any indications that the company is looking to expand outside of its Asian and European roots to include a North American presence -- but it's not any more shunning than we're accustomed to 'round these parts.

    Reviews: Crazy Japanese Kit Kats

For some reason JList sent me a box of Kit Kats. These aren’t just any Kit Kats. They’re Japanese Kit Kats. If the Japanese are good at anything, it’s making the familiar inexplicably strange. So I decided to open up all of these Kit Kats and try them for you. I came away somewhat disappointed – [...]

Casio G’zOne Brigade brings whole new level of rugged insanity to the QWERTY clamshell

We've seen some crazy phones in our day, many of them from Casio, as it turns out, but the G'zOne Brigade really pushes the envelope. It's a ruggedized, weatherproof, Push to Talk QWERTY clamshell, with some of the odder physical protrusions we've seen on a handset this decade. Unfortunately, the QWERTY keyboard, which is populated with large and very clickable keys, is arranged in possibly one of the least sensible layouts conceivable. Software-wise the handset runs the full gamut of V CAST apps and also includes a document viewer for opening Microsoft Office files and PDFs. Price and availability info will be revealed "closer to launch."

    Review: EOS wireless speaker system

EOSTo paraphrase my favorite Jack Handy quote, "If the Vikings were around today, they would probably be amazed at the number of wireless audio solutions we have." Hopefully said Vikings would read reviews of said wireless audio solutions here at CrunchGear, since we've covered a fair number of these things. Today we're taking a look at the Eos wireless audio solution. "Named for the Greek goddess of dawn, Eos lets you put great music all over your house -- without the hassle of wires." Read on for the whole review!

Belkin announces 14 new iPhone 3G/3G S cases

What would a Monday morning be without an iPhone accessory post? I don’t know because it seems like we do them all the time! With today’s announcement, Belkin has covered the whole gamut to meet everyone’s needs. A variety of silicone and leather cases with various graphics will adorn your iPhone and there’s even a douchey horizontal holster for you belt. Oh, there’s a sport band case as well. I think I’ll be picking one of those up. All the cases are available now for $20 to $30 except the BodyGuard cases, which launch next month.

Sharp adds cyan and yellow to its RGB displays, laughs scornfully at magenta
Sharp is taking some cues from the nearly dearly departed print publishing world for its next line of LCDs, adding two colors to the typical RGB gamut. Cyan and yellow, half of the CMYK spread that makes your Sunday Garfield sketch pop, are going to be added to the company's displays to make up what it's dubbing "Multi-Primary-Color Technology." The tech is said to be able to reproduce 99 percent of all colors able to be perceived by the human eye -- because apparently 1.7 billion colors from a traditional LCD wasn't enough. The displays will be on display at the Society for Information Display Symposium in San Antonio starting next week. So, lucky Texans, prepare to get your cone cells massaged.
