Nexus One steps up to 720p HD video thanks to latest hack (video)

Just more evidence that rooting is the only true path of the geek. The indefatigable coders over at xda-developers have just pushed out a download that allows the Nexus One to start shooting video at 720p resolution. You'll need to have at least CyanogenMod version 5.0.8test3, but once you get your house in order, you'll be enjoying one of the big touted features of the latest handsets on your five-month old Googlephone. Pretty neat, and what's even better is that work is already underway to improve audio and the fps rate, as well as making the code compatible with Android Froyo, it all just requires a bit more tinkering. So, hit the source link to get the download or join us after the break for a quick sample video.

The ExoPC’s release date and GPU, everyone

We've been following the ExoPC's development with a bit of curiosity and excitement. It's one of the only tablets, along with the Notion Ink Adam and WePad, that has a chance to grab a bit of marketshare away from the iPad. The ExoPC just got a bit more interesting, too. Blog Geek just got confirmation that the slate will use the Broadcom BCM70012 or Crystal HD, which should have enough juice to provide silky-smooth 1080p HD video playback. Best of all, though, the tablet is set to come out in within a few months.

Photo report: CrunchGear visits the Gundam Cafe in Akihabara (sort of)

I went to the world's geek paradise, the Akihabara district in Tokyo, today to get lunch in the new Gundam Cafe [JP] that opened just a few days ago. As the name suggests, the Cafe is a dream come true for hardcore Gundam fans, offering everything from Gundam-shaped cakes to restrooms designed in Gundam style.

    For women only: Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-W530D

Sony Japan today announced [JP] a new digital camera that's specifically geared towards women. Technically speaking, the DSC-W530D isn't really a new device (it was unveiled earlier this year in Japan and is available for $200 in the US, too). But Sony changed the design to (possibly) make the Cyber-shot more appealing to female customers.

PAX East 2010: In which we talk to a dude wearing a WWE belt for some reason

OK, so PAX may be crawling with people dressed as Chris Redfield and, um, Generic Skimpy Outfit Female, but it takes a certain kind of geek to walk around with a WWE championship belt. I use the word “geek” with all due respect, of course: we're all geeks here at PAX.

Palm webOS 1.4 SDK released to developers, allows apps to record video

It’s a bit different than the “developers get the new firmware first” mentality we’ve grown used to from those other guys, but Palm has now released the SDK for webOS 1.4. The flagship feature of webOS 1.4 (besides Adobe Flash support, which isn’t available just yet) is its new found ability to record video. With [...]

Android update after next likely to be codenamed “Gingerbread”

As any good Android-obsessed geek should know by now, Google’s made a tradition out of alphabetically naming their firmware builds after sweets. Android 1.5 was “Cupcake”, v1.6 was “Donut”, v2.0 is “Eclair”, while the next release will be lovingly dubbed “Froyo”. “But what comes after that?!” you say from the edge of your seat. • T-Mobile myTouch with a 3.5mm jack caught on camera

T-Mobile myTouch with a 3.5mm jack caught on camera

Not too long ago, HTC announced -- much to our excitement -- that they would be putting 3.5mm jacks in all of their handsets. In non-geek speak, that means that you wouldn't need some annoying little one inch, easy-to-lose cable adapter just to be able to use your own headphones. One of the last phones to sneak out with a non-3.5mm jack was the HTC T-Mobile myTouch. It was actually a pretty decent handset -- but that useless jack really killed our buzz when we reviewed it. Fortunately, it looks like HTC and T-Mobile are going back to fix the error in their ways.
