Photos and videos: CrunchGear visits Japan’s biggest Otaku party (CGM Night)

Japan's most famous Otaku culture blogger Danny Choo invited video games/anime/manga/Cosplay/figures/maid cafe fanatics from all over the country last weekend, and about 200 showed up at Digital Hollywood University for the eighth "CGM Night" (here's my report on the last one). The idea is to bring Otaku and geeks out of their rooms and socialize among people of their kind. Needless to say, I was one of them (I live in Tokyo).

He’s back: 60-foot Gundam is (almost) ready again

We spent quite a few posts on the uber-cool, gigantic Gundam statue that was erected in Tokyo Bay last year. The 60-foot robot statue was deconstructed in September, with Bandai quickly announcing plans to re-erect the big guy in Shizuoka soon. And now he's almost ready.

WWE finally has a YouTube account (and with full episodes)

I must be seeing things... is that an official WWE YouTube page, and one that already has last night's episode of Monday Night Raw online? This is so unlike WWE, embracing technology. They must have hired someone new in recent weeks, someone who told them that, you know, the Internet isn't merely for “geeks” anymore.

  • Motorola Flipout preview

    Motorola Flipout preview

We know you're excited -- the Nokia Twist finally has a legitimate competitor in the square-shaped pseudo-smartphone space! Motorola snuck up on us with its Flipout unveiling yesterday, so today we diligently trudged along to its local offices to get properly acquainted with this new Android handset. Running version 2.1 (Eclair) on a 600MHz processor might seem like a recipe for trouble, but it's the same TI OMAP 3410 as used in the Droid, and our time with the little quadrangle revealed it could handle itself with aplomb. The Flipout also boasts a freshened up Motoblur implementation and 512MB of both RAM and ROM, but only 150MB for user storage -- time to bring on Froyo, eh? With interchangeable back covers (two will come in the retail box) and that handbag-friendly form factor, the Flipout is unashamedly flirting with being a phone for style-conscious lady-geeks, but let's see if it doesn't appeal to gruff old types like us as well. Join us after the break for our full hands-on impressions.

The Star Wars Kid is back and he’s going to be a lawyer

It was eight years ago that Ghyslain Raza slashed his way into our hearts with his Star Wars Kid video. Sadly, Raza suffered from severe bullying and abuse for his video and eventually ended up in a psychiatric ward for children. However, his video was seen 1 billion times and multiple thousands of geeks came immediately to his defense. While those must have been the worst years of his life, things are now looking up. He and his family sued the kids who leaked the video for $250,000, settled, and that seemed to be the end of it. Now, however, Ghyslain just became the president of the Patrimoine Trois-Rivières, a heritage society dedicated to conserving his hometown in Quebec. He's also working on law degree at McGill in Montreal.

Microsoft Tag comes out of beta, promises free colorful codes for all

Microsoft Tag comes out of beta, promises free colorful codes for allIt was about a year and a half ago that Microsoft decided it could do QR codes better, that any universal coding system needed a dash of color, and launched Tag. Now, the roughly one billion Tags that users have printed have been made a little less illegitimate, with Microsoft bringing the service out of beta and taking the opportunity to toot Tag's trumpet a bit. The codes have appeared in 20 million magazines so far and have recently been deployed to create a sort of tour for geeks in Amsterdam (no word on whether our own international man of mystery is featured). Meanwhile America's cultural hub, the Mall of America, has been similarly bestickered to "enhance customer engagement," but based on our previous experiences at that bastion of commercialism we're thinking scooters and foot massages might have been more effective.

mTouch: An affordable multi-touch web table

It's hard out here at Disrupt for gadget geeks, but we just got lucky. Merel Technologies is showing off a very cool multi-touch web table that uses gesture recognition, object recognition, and multi-user multi-touch to create a new way to interact with media and kiosk apps. The best thing? It costs $3,200 for the 32-inch model and $4,200 for the 42-incher and they're available now. The table is made by Merel Technologies in New York and it uses a stacked multi-touch layer along with an LCD TV to display the interface. A built-in PC runs the whole thing and you can tear it down to create a coffee-table sized device. You can also customize colors. Click through for our hands-on video.

Video: Discarded Motorola RAZR3 Prototype Gives a Glimpse Into The Moto That Could Have Been

Back in 2008, after milking the poor cash cow to death, Motorola decided to can their once crazy-popular RAZR series of phones. A good thing, too, as their Android line of phones are really quite good, and have helped them climb out of the dreaded red end. But today over on Slash Gear, a prototype RAZR3 has risen from the grave to show us a twisted world where Motorola feature phones were the hotness, and smart phones were only for the geeks and their pocket protectors (like me...). It's quite chilling.
