Google-branded phone coming early next year?
Posted on November 18, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, LG, Samsung, Android
We've been hearing talk of thoroughly Google-branded phones since before Android was announced -- and if you want to get really technical about it, you could argue that it's already happened twice in the form of the Dev Phone 1 and the Ion. Thing is, those are strictly developer-oriented one-offs based on existing models, and TechCrunch is reporting in a rather authoritative tone today that Google's just about to launch a consumer phone all its own designed to in-house, no-compromise specifications with signs suggesting that either Samsung or LG would be responsible for OEM duties. Allegedly, the device was supposed to be at retail in time for the holidays but ended up getting pushed back into early 2010, at which point we can expect a big marketing push -- but the question is, why? Google had a heavy hand in the design and development of the chunky, geeky HTC Dream, so we already know they're probably better off leaving the details of the industrial design to the guys who've been doing this for a while -- and with strong new partnerships with Verizon and Motorola just now bearing fruit, it's safe to say that Big Red wouldn't be a launch partner. Our most interesting theory here is that AT&T -- which has gone totally radio-silent for all things Android in the past six months -- is responding to the probable impending loss of its iPhone exclusivity by scoring a coup on a gorgeous, aspirational device with the Google logo all over it. Given the time frame that TC's suggesting, it sounds like we wouldn't have to wait long to find out what's what.Google-branded phone coming early next year? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 04:47:00 EST. Don’t show your parents: HTC Tattoo spotted on video
Posted on September 25, 2009 | No CommentsHTC’s first foray into a cheap budget-friendly Android smartphone comes in the form of the previously revealed Tattoo (what are you trying to say, HTC, all us poor folks have tattoos?). And just like a real tattoo, HTC wants your Tat to be personal and unique, so the phone comes with removable/swappable front and back [...] -
GDGT Launches For Non Stop Gadget Action
Posted on July 1, 2009 | No Comments
Last summer we broke the news that Engadget editor-in-chief Ryan Block would team with former editor-in-chief Peter Rojas to create a new gadget startup. Today that new startup, GDGT, launches. Gadget lovers rejoice - this is a social site where you can obsess over those tiny bundles of tech joy among others just as geeky as you.
GDGT (pronounced "g-d-g-t," but I like to just say "gadget") is a highly structured wiki that centers on tech gadgets. Like our own Crunchbase, anyone can edit any information on the site, but everything is structured which allows for lots of slicing and dicing of the data.
Users select gadgets that they own, used to own, or want, and can add reviews and ratings. Blog reviews are threaded into the discussion as well:

Transformer Cufflinks
Posted on June 26, 2009 | No Comments“Transformers, robots in the sky!” as I erroneously sang back in the schoolyard. These Transfomer cufflinks from Etsy maker Finkstudio do not, sadly, soar through the stratosphere, but they do transform from silver plated Decepticon and Autobot trinkets to silver plated Decepticon and Autobot cuff-fastenings. Let’s see the giant Optimun Prime manage that. At just $20 the [...] -
Eight Cylinders of Pencil-Sharpening Action, And a Pizza Cutter
Posted on June 23, 2009 | No CommentsToday’s “waste of plastic” award goes to two items. A tag-team of tat, if you will. In the red corner, we have the Top Gear V8 Pencil Sharpener, a product with such a dearth of features that one of the spec-sheet bullet points reads “It is made of plastic.” It’s exactly what you’d expect: an electric [...]
