MPAA refused to tell U.S. GAO where it got its piracy numbers
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No CommentsMore fallout from last week's U.S. Government Accountability Office report on the entertainment industry's piracy numbers. The gist of the report was that the government (and you and I) should never believe what the entertainment industry has to say again re: piracy because it was pulling data completely out of thin air. “Oh, 44 percent of all unauthorized file-sharing comes from universities, so you universities have to install filters to prevent students from downloading this and that, and we'll need new laws passed to protect our dying business methods. Oh, wait, sorry, math error, that's only 15 percent of unauthorized file-sharing. What, you want to know where we got these numbers from? Sorry, can't tell you, trade secret, but please pass favorable legislation anyway, kthxbye.”

UK ISPs prepare for Digital Economy P2P fallout
Posted on April 13, 2010 | No CommentsThe Digital Economy Act passed in the UK, as you know, and it's pretty terrible. One of the more spicy sections of the law involved peer-to-peer use, and how it basically makes ISPs responsible for what their customers download. So if HBO finds that you've been download “The Pacific,” (really good show, by the way, much to my surprise) it can contact your ISP, who's then responsible for telling you to knock if off. If not, you face a truly horrible punishment: you're sent to Stoke! (That's a joke, people!)

CrunchGear PSA: Tech tax deductions

I did my taxes recently, and this is the first year that I actually bothered to deduct for all those things that I buy over the year for my job. It was confusing frankly, and I wish I'd read this article before I did it. Hopefully you'll read this in time to do your deductions correctly, and not make the same mistakes I did (which caused me to miss out on several things I could have claimed).

AppGate: App review sites ask for money in exhange for reviews

It seems that certain iPhone App developers are paying low-rent "review" sites for favorable reviews, thereby creating the false impression that their App is cool and everything.

Even if you didn't you probably are already familiar with the basic concept: a U.S. Army guy whose job it is to disable I.E.D.s sorta goes crazy. That's the gist of it. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense in the UK has unveiled something called the Dragon Runner, a remote-controlled robot that disables bombs.

The FCC has announced its National Broadband Plan, which describes where the agency would like to see the U.S. in a few years' time vis-à-vis broadband and connectedness. It's sorta like the UK's Digital Britain report, published last year. The big thing is this: it's in America's best interest to turn itself into a first-world nation again, and the best way to do that is to develop its Internet infrastructure a wee bit more. That's the gist of it: better, faster Internet access for many more people.

Pink Floyd only wants you to download their entire albums, not individual songs
Posted on March 12, 2010 | No CommentsThere was an interesting debate on today's Ron and Fez that speaks to a subject we've been whinging about for some time now: digital delivery of content, specifically of music. Pink Floyd has won a court ruling that will put an end to places like iTunes selling its songs individually. The band feels that their music can only truly be appreciated in the album format, from start to finish, and it never liked people being able to pick and choose what songs they wanted to download.

That's what happens when the same company controls the hardware as well as the operating system (and several of the most prominent pieces of software). The highest ranking PC manufacturer is Dell for desktops and Lenovo for laptops.
