The Engadget Show returns Wednesday, June 23rd with Jimmy Fallon, Microsoft Kinect, and more!
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsThat's right, Engadgeteers -- the tables have turned. Next Wednesday, June 23rd, the Engadget Show returns full force with a very special guest: Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (and also a major geek). Jimmy will be sitting down with us for the kind of frank, eye-opening, and downright thrilling one-on-one conversation only the Engadget Show can provide. Not only that, but we'll have the Microsoft Kinect live and on stage for a hands-on demo -- so you'll get a chance to see it in action long before it hits shelves this November! And there are lots of other major surprises in-store.
We'll also have music from the inimitable Glomag, along with some stunning visuals. Oh, and did we mention the crazy giveaways? Like... a pair of new Xbox 360s? Seriously, you do not want to miss this one -- it's going to be epic.
The Show will be taking place at the Rose Auditorium in Cooper Union's New Academic Building, located in Manhattan at 41 Cooper Square. Seating is extremely limited, so get there early!
Here's all the info you need:
- There is no admission fee -- tickets are completely free
- The event is all ages
- Ticketing will begin at 5PM on Wednesday, doors will open for seating at 7:30PM, and the show begins at 8PM
- You cannot collect tickets for friends or family -- anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket
- Seating capacity is limited (only about 200 seats in the theatre), and once we're full, we're full
- The venue is located at 41 Cooper Square New York, NY 10003 (map after the break)
- The show length is around an hour
Sprint is offering 50 guaranteed tickets to the Engadget Show taping to the first 50 entrants who text "ENGADGET" to 467467 or enter online! Standard text messaging rates apply. Click for the Official Rules and see how to enter online.

Microsoft’s Oprah moment: You’re all getting Xboxes
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No Comments
Although there was plenty of news coming out of Microsoft today, the most interesting move is their decision to begin shipping the brand new XBox - it's basically the old XBox with 802.11n Wi-Fi, a 250GB hard drive, and Kinect support - the same week they announced it. It's not quite same day, but it's close.
However, another treat came when they announced all the media at their press event will be getting XBox 360s immediately and that they would be showing up at their domiciles and places of business posthaste.
These sort of giveaways are common at developer events (well, actually just Google IO) and I suspect they'll become more popular in the coming months. Gear is so cheap to build and ship that it almost makes sense to blanket the evangelists with it. Whereas the old model of "selective releases" works for some products - Apple, in particular excels at this - the XBox team is dealing with an entrenched base of hardware users who will be loathe to swap out their old XBox, provided they're not RRODed.
Update: Now with video!

The Engadget Show returns, this Saturday, May 22nd with Sprint’s Evo 4G, Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch, and an Engadget editors Q&A!
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsGuess what humans? It's that time again -- the Engadget Show returns this Saturday, May 22nd at 5pm... and it's shaping up to be a killer! First up, we'll have an exclusive interview with Adobe's CTO Kevin Lynch (taped at the Google I/O conference), which is sure to be both informative and wildly entertaining. What's more, Josh, Paul, and Nilay will be putting the new HTC Evo 4G through its paces live onstage, then they'll be joined by our very own Chris Ziegler and Laura June for a hard-hitting round of Q&A with the audience. That's right, it's your chance to ask the Engadget editors anything, live and in-person, plus much more (see instructions in the bullet points below). And as usual, we'll have some rocking 8-bit music from minusbaby and visuals from notendo and plenty of those good 'ol Engadget Show shenanigans.
You like giveaways? Well then, this is your lucky week (if you attend). Many of you will be walking away with shiny new Voyager Pro headsets, courtesy of Plantronics and we've got tons of Engadget t-shirts to hand out!
Oh, and did we mention we're also giving away a brand new iPad (courtesy of The Little App Factory and bundled with all of their software titles)? Well we are, alongside a handful of other goodies.
The Engadget Show is sponsored by Sprint, and will take place at the Times Center, part of The New York Times Building in the heart of New York City at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues (see map after the break). Tickets are -- as always -- free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be first come, first served... so get there early!
Sprint is also offering 50 guaranteed tickets to The Engadget Show taping to the first 50 entrants who text "ENGADGET" to 467467 or enter online! Standard text messaging rates apply. Click for the official rules and see how to enter online.

- If you have a question for the editor Q&A, email your question to showquestions [at] engadget [dot] com, or hand the question in to us at the venue by 3:30PM. You must hand in the query on an index card or piece of paper when you pick up your tickets.

The Engadget Show tapes today with HTC’s Drew Bamford and Chris Grant of Joystiq (and giveaways!)
Posted on November 22, 2009 | No CommentsThe Engadget Show is happening again, humans! Today, November 22nd, we'll be bringing that live magic back to the stage as we sit down with Drew Bamford (you can read a bit about him here), director of HTC's Innovation Center (the place where things like the Sense UI are born).
We'll also be joined by Joystiq's Editor-in-chief Chris Grant for a special roundtable discussion focused on gaming, and we'll be demoing a bunch of new holiday titles as well as Spawn Labs' gaming placeshifter!
As a bonus, we've got giveaways for everyone in the audience, plus one of the lucky attendees will walk away with that Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle we just got our hands on -- and HTC will be giving away a Droid Eris as well!
The show takes place at the Tishman Auditorium at Parsons The New School for Design. As you may already know, we film live in front of an audience once a month -- but if you can't make it, don't worry. We're bringing the video back home to Engadget (and as a free download here, in the iTunes Store, or the Zune Marketplace) for your viewing pleasure.
The beautiful venue (which you can see in a photo after the break) is located at 66 W. 12th Street between 5th and 6th Aves. Seating is limited and tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis -- which means if you want to join us in the audience for the show, you'll have to arrive early and be prepared for a little wait.
Here are the facts you need to know about the show:
- The show is graciously sponsored by Nokia, and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design
- The total show length will be around an hour
- The amazing Glomag will be performing live along with visualist Dan Winckler!
- There is no admission fee -- tickets are completely free
- The event is all ages
- The venue seats just over 450 people
- Parsons students are welcomed, and we encourage them to come!
- Tickets will be available for pickup at the Tishman Auditorium at 2PM on the 22nd, and we're strongly encouraging people to get their tickets and not stand in line -- if you have a ticket, you'll have a seat!
- You'll need to hold onto your ticket stub to be eligible for the giveaways
- You cannot pick up tickets for other people -- if you want your friend to get a ticket, bring your friend!
- The show begins at 5PM, and doors will open at 4:30PM

Best Buy to sell Modern Warfare 2 at midnight and fuel your gaming obsession even more
Posted on November 5, 2009 | No Comments
Look out, Walmart. Best Buy is going to sell Modern Warefare 2 at midnight too. But unlike Walmart, Best Buy's average middle of the night clientele doesn't look like this. or this. or this. The line will start at 10:30 p.m. and at 12:01 a.m., you and a few other socially-stunted gamers will get a chance to buy the game. How exciting. If you must be the first to own the game, there is a nice little advantage to buying the game at Best Buy instead of Walmart though.

Google Gives The Ultimate Holiday Gift: Free WiFi On Virgin America Flights
Posted on October 19, 2009 | No Comments
Google is going to make a lot of frequent flyers, and Virgin America, happy this holiday season. As a gift to people who fly on Virgin America's WiFi-equipped planes, Google will be footing the bill for everybody on board between November 10, 2009, and January 15, 2010.
For Google, this is a smart marketing move because it generates tons of good will among everyone who flies Virgin America. But Google is really giving a gift to Virgin America in the form of yet one more incentive to fly its planes over competitors'. Will American Airlines and others with WiFi on board have to respond with their own freebie giveaways? I hope so.
