Form over function: Brinell Purestorage external drives
Posted on March 29, 2010 | No Comments
I understand the desire to have your computer stuff look good, really I do. But things like this are just silly to me. They are obviously pointed at a market that doesn't know any better, and buy things based on the appearance rather then the functionality. Brinell, the company that makes these fancy veneer clad drives, has even won a couple of design awards for their form over function.

RetroCrunch: The Bloc-Alarm door stop
Posted on January 22, 2010 | No Comments
Going to try something a bit different today, and talk about some retro technology. Here's a rather simple gadget called a Bloc-Alarm. Intended for the cheapskate who doesn't want to actually pay for an alarm service, or for someone that is staying in a hotel, the Bloc-Alarm is basically a wedge shaped door block that triggers if someone tries to open a door.

Does anyone in tech pay attention to unemployment numbers? Hard to buy that new gizmo when you don’t have a job, right?
Posted on November 6, 2009 | No CommentsWriting about tech is so peculiar. On one hand we're expected to be enthusiastic about the things we cover; no one wants to see us being negative and dismissive about every little thing. That's no fun. On the other hand, you don't want a bunch of ninnies bleating on about how great this year's piece of plastic is compared to last year's. How is that useful to anyone? A bit of skepticism is necessary so we don't come across as cheerleaders for this or that company, or for this or that device. You can't be objective if you worship the ground that the two Steves—Jobs and Ballmer—walk on.

Case-Mate’s fully customizable and recyclable iPhone case
Posted on September 11, 2009 | No CommentsSeriously, this case offers a lot for next to nothing. Not only can you bedazzle it anyway you want, but when you’re done with it, just throw it in with your recycling. Plus it’s only $0.99 or 10 for $8. But the fun doesn’t stop there. We all know that the iPhone is a mugger beacon. [...] -
The F1Showcar simulator is kind of cool
Posted on July 26, 2009 | No CommentsI don’t know how I feel about this $44,990 F1 simulator. On one hand, it’s a fraking F1 car mounted on top of a motion simulating gizmo. You turn left in the game, the car shifts left. How cool is that? Plus, it’s a Vodafone-sponsored car so you can be just like Lewis Hamilton. But doesn’t it [...] -
SwissMiniGun is World’s Smallest Revolver
Posted on July 15, 2009 | No CommentsThe SwissMiniGun is officially the smallest gun in the world. Look at the picture on the right and it appears to be just a regular revolver, apart from the “oversized” trigger sticking out the bottom. One glance at the picture on the left, though, shows that it could easily be used as a key fob. But [...] -

Because we have just discovered the perfect companion for this executive toy. The Play More Notebook features normal lined paper (for people who have trouble writing in a straight line) on the front, but turn it around and you’ll see [...] -
LG Watch Phone Likely to Launch in August
Posted on July 6, 2009 | No CommentsRemember the LG watch phone, a slim touchscreen gizmo that switches between being a digital watch and a communication device? The phone created quite a stir at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. Now reports suggest it is ready to make its debut in U.K. in August. The phone will be exclusive to telecom carrier [...] -
Retro-Electro Digital-Analog Ruler
Posted on July 6, 2009 | No CommentsShay Shafranek’s electronic ruler is a concept design with a difference. Instead of a boring mockup that only exists inside a computer’s brain, the ruler is a real, working model which lives in meatspace. The wooden stick is unmarked and instead has an LED readout which glows through the top layer of a multi-ply construction, [...] -
