Motorola Shadow slithers into Verizon’s inventory database as MB810
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsIf the whole "smoke -> fire" adage proves true once more, it's looking like Verizon loyalists can expect to see a Shadow at least a few milliseconds before a CDMA iPhone. Following up on months of leaks and rumors, we've got yet another snippet of evidence pointing towards a VZW release of the so-called Motorola Shadow. Spotted here in the carrier's inventory database, the MB810 moniker aligns perfectly with that WiFi certification we saw earlier in the month. Combine that with the fact that this is definitely some sort of Motorola smartphone, and you've got everything you need to start pinching those pennies for a June / July debut. Oh, you already threw down a Benjamin for Memorial Day grub? Good luck with that return policy.

Global Verge wins $43 million lawsuit against mystery MVNO Zer01
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsWhen we first heard about Zer01 it was set to launch at a time when other MVNOs were disappearing. (Remember Amp'd Mobile, or Helio?) Zer01 was pledging unlimited voice and data for just $69.99 a month, before most other carriers had their $99 plans, but ultimately never delivered a thing. Apparently Global Verge was similarly left in the dark, but unlike you or I it had invested $170,000 in Zer01 in exchange for selling wireless services as part of its multi-level marketing company. Global Verge had been allowing its "e-associates" (people who pay for the right to hawk Global Verge's wares) to shill for Zer01 wireless, which of course never delivered a single call. There are accusations flying fast and frantic about which of the two companies is the worst offender here, but the District Court in Clark County, Nevada at least believes that it's Zer01 reneging on its promises, awarding $43 million to Global Verge for breach of contract and various other legal wrongdoings. Congrats, GV, and good luck collecting.

Just last week, we asked the question if the world needs yet another mobile operating system (Samsung's Bada). Now it turns out Japan's biggest cell phone carrier, NTT DoCoMo, apparently thinks the answer is yes. The telecom behemoth (55 million customers in Japan) today announced [press release in English] the development of a brand new "application platform for mobile phones", which is planned to go global, too.

Back in the old days, when people got their tech news from stacks of paper stapled together called "magazines," Popular Science was a nerd's dream. It was full of all sorts of exciting things, had less nudity in it than Omni (Note: This is not a good thing but your parents would buy it for you), and let you dream of jet packs. This is not to say that that old stalwart PopSci isn't still around, but back in the old days it was our only lifeline to the world of high tech.
