Nokia E73 Mode review
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsSome two years after its release, there are still plenty of people who'll swear up and down that the E71 is the finest phone Nokia has ever produced -- and for good reason. As a platform, S60 was the product of a simpler time when the smartphone market was dominated not by touchscreens, but by numeric keypads, and the E71 was arguably the last of a string of bona fide successes that Nokia enjoyed in the platform's heyday alongside pioneering handsets like the N82 and N95. Thing is, the E71 was different than those other models in a very important way: it was elegant. Historically, Nokias have typically favored function over form and saved the highest-quality materials for the Vertu line, but the E71 bucked that trend -- it was slim, sexy, chock-full of metal, and curved in all the right places. In fact, to this day, it remains one of the best-looking, best-feeling smartphones ever made.
Customers (and reviewers) made their love for the E71 clear, and Nokia sought to recapture the glory with the introduction of the refined, upgraded E72. For Americans, of course, the biggest problem with the E72 was that you couldn't buy it from a carrier -- and unlike the E71, it never got much traction as an unlocked purchase. That's where the E73 Mode comes into play, a mildly reworked version of the E72 with T-Mobile branding and, of course, support for 3G on T-Mobile's AWS bands. Put bluntly, though, this is still just a warmed-over E71 -- and in 2010, is there a market for that? Let's have a look.Continue reading Nokia E73 Mode review

The Kindle will soon be available at Target locations nationwide
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No Comments
This has been a long time coming. The Kindle has slowly been creeping into Target retail outlets but the company just issued a presser stating that the most popular ebook reader on the planet will be available nationwide on June 6th. This officially makes Target Amazon's first brick and mortar retail partner, although Target isn't new to the ebook game.

Unboxing the Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC
Posted on April 18, 2010 | No Comments
At last! After oh-so-many painstaking months of waiting, the HTC Incredible is here. Well, almost. It doesn't launch until April 29th -- about 10 days from today -- but we got our hands on one a bit early.
People are pretty excited for this thing, and for good reason: with a 1GHZ Snapdragon CPU, an 8 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1, it's easily the most spec'd out Android handset on Verizon's line up -- and on any US carrier's current line up, for that matter. Plus it's running HTC's custom Sense UI overhaul on Android 2.1, which really seals the deal
Our full review of the device should be up this afternoon. In the mean time, enjoy our exhaustive unboxing video and image gallery after the jump!

More details emerge about the Boxee Box
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No Comments
Everyone, where everyone means Internet nerds, has been talking a lot about the Boxee Box the last few days. For good reason too. It brings the ultra-cool software to your living room in an official product. AppleTV hacking will soon not be required to use Boxee on your HDTV. But with all the talk recently, some points have been missing. No more, Andrew from Boxee just posted a bunch of info concerning the upcoming digital appliance.

Motorola registers ‘Backflip’ name, could be for the Motus
Posted on November 25, 2009 | No CommentsWe think there's probably a really good reason why landscape QWERTY handsets don't hinge in reverse, but hey, everyone gets a little wild and crazy once in a while, right? Cellpassion has discovered that Moto has recently secured rights to the "Backflip" name in Europe, which would dovetail nicely with that allegedly leaked image of the upcoming Motus a few days back -- we hadn't really considered it the first time around, but on second look, we can imagine how this wouldn't be your average mechanism here. Sadly, the latest rumors have this thing based on Android 1.5 when it hits next quarter, suggesting that Motorola's having a hell of a time updating BLUR for newer builds -- and that could be a huge sticking point for 'em going forward.Motorola registers 'Backflip' name, could be for the Motus originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 15:13:00 EST. I say we should never have to read the manual
Posted on November 9, 2009 | No Comments
Have you heard? Men generally don't read the manual before calling tech support. Women do. It probably has something to do with ego or something like that, but you know what, I never read the manual and for a damn good reason.

Verizon Droid Is The Real Deal
Posted on October 18, 2009 | No Comments
Verizon and Motorola finally lifted the curtain on their new Droid Android phone yesterday. Make no mistake, this is Android's flagship product, and the first phone that will pose a significant threat to Apple's iPhone. And it will be available very soon, possibly as early as the end of this month.
MobileCrunch has been tracking the phone, which has also been called the Tao or Sholes, for some time. Just about anyone who has come in contact with the phone can't stop talking about it. And from what we hear, they have good reason.
The phone is a three-way effort between Motorola, Verizon and Google. It looks a lot like the iPhone, and may even be as thin or thinner than the iPhone 3GS. It also has two key advantages over the iPhone - a slide out physical keyboard, and use of the Verizon network.
Unlike previous Android phones, the Droid is rumored to be powered by the TI OMAP3430, the same core that the iPhone and Palm Pre use, and which significantly outperforms Qualcomm 528MHz ARM11 based Android phones that exist today (Engadget has a great overview article on mobile CPUs).

Avatar toys go augmented-reality, courtesy of Mattel and Total Immersion
Posted on October 2, 2009 | No Comments
This is a crazy fun demo of the new Avatar toys by Mattel. Each toy includes a little card that is scannable via webcam and creates an on-screen augmented reality robot or character. While this is old hat for most of us, Mattel is quite proud of being ahead of the curve and for good reason. You can see more demos at AvatarItag.com.
Total Immersion made the technology and even added a little "button" system to the cards. When you touch a spot on the card, the onscreen character pulls a knife, shoots a gun, or recounts part of the story. The added information and data will change over time, up to the release of the movie on December 18.

HP to merge printers and PC to bolster both
Posted on September 30, 2009 | No Comments
HP's printer division, long a cash cow, is being folded into its PC division after sales of printers and ink fell this year. Most companies broke out their printer divisions once they realized they could make a lot of money there but now that HP is beating Dell, the company may see a good reason to bring printers and PCs together.

Epson Japan announces Dreamio projector with built-in DVD player
Posted on September 29, 2009 | No Comments
Only very few home electronics companies dare selling projectors housing a DVD player. There's a good reason for this: The things aren't really a picnic for the eyes, as this example from last month shows. And even established brands like Epson fail to deliver well-designed hardware in this niche. Case in point: Their new dreamio EH-DM30 [JP].

Review: Vue Personal Video Network
Posted on September 22, 2009 | No CommentsWhen I saw the Vue Personal Video Network a few months ago, I was impressed. The system is dead simple to install. You plug in a base station, sync two little wireless cameras that run on tiny batteries, and watch the video on any web browser, anywhere. It’s like a little mini-security system that you [...] -
AT&T Tilt 2 (Touch Pro 2) coming on Oct. 18th?
Posted on September 18, 2009 | No CommentsAT&T may be a few weeks behind Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon in launching the Touch Pro 2, but it seems they’re not holding off without good reason: Windows Mobile 6.5. As is well known by now, October 6th is the big day for Windows Mobile 6.5 – the day in which the first 6.5 handsets (and [...] -
1.5 million Durabrand DVD players recalled because they can burn down your house!!!
Posted on August 21, 2009 | No Comments
This is what you get. You knew there was a good reason why that Durabrand DVD player only cost $30 at Walmart when the rest averaged $80. It's because they can catch on fire, burn down your house, and kill your cats according to a recall. So far there have been 12 cases of the players overheating with five of them catching on fire and causing property damage. Think of the cats! The recall affects 1.5 million DVD players sold at Walmart from January 2006 to July 2009. Think hard. Is this the DVD player you bought for Grandma?

Louis CK, the comedian who told you to stop complaining about technology, is close to another sitcom
Posted on August 10, 2009 | No CommentsIt was only a few months ago that comedian Louis CK became an Internet sensation. Comedy fans had followed his act for years, but it was his appearance on Late Night With Conan that lead to posts by Doug Aamoth and interviews with Vanity Fair. And now the comedian, who's a big Leica fan, by the way, looks to be getting another sitcom, this time on FX.

I can't come up with a good reason why Computer Engineer Barbie is more socially-forward than Environmentalist Barbie, Surgeon Barbie, Architect Barbie, or News Anchor Barbie. It probably has something to do with a fantasy I share with nearly every other computer nerd. Whatever.
