LinkPush: Chrome-to-Phone for the rest of us (those not on Android 2.2)

One of the neat-o features introduced in Android 2.2 (or Froyo) is "Chrome-to-Phone", which gives the ability to take what you're viewing in the Google Chrome browser (on your PC/Mac), and push it straight to your Froyo phone.
I've not yet seen this in person, though, because I'm stuck on a pre-Froyo build of Android. Which sucks.
But today, that changes: I found someone that -- like me -- was longing for some Chrome-to-Phone action on their Android 2.1 phone. Unlike me, however, they did something about it.
And so I introduce to you LinkPush: the Chrome-to-Phone alternative for the rest of us.

Ford Sync, which Matt has talked about for some time, now works with Google Maps. That is, from Google Maps on your computer or mobile or whatever, you select a destination then send it straight to your car. That way, when you hop in the saddle—cars have saddles, right?—your destination is all marked out for you. Pretty neat.

Google: Android fragmentation ‘is a boogeyman, a red herring’
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsGoogle's Dan Morrill, open source and compatibility program manager in the Android team, just penned a lengthy diatribe against the very concept of fragmentation on the official Android Developers Blog, basically saying it doesn't exist. Actually, the language is a little more colorful:
Sure, as Android goes, the term "fragmentation" has meant moderately different things in different contexts over the past couple years -- fair enough. But the fact remains that releasing six major revisions of any platform within the span of 19 months (four of which are in heavy user circulation) is unprecedented and potentially unsettling to manufacturers and consumers alike. Your average Joe isn't going to understand why, for example, his HTC Hero that he bought a few months back can't use the Buzz widget or some of the cooler features in Google Maps, and Google hasn't done a very good job of explaining or justifying it, other than by blocking incompatible apps and updates from being visible in the Market."Because it means everything, it actually means nothing, so the term is useless. Stories on 'fragmentation' are dramatic and they drive traffic to pundits' blogs, but they have little to do with reality. Google partnership has GM OnStar exploring Maps, open APIs and more
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsIn a move that could shape the mobile landscape -- or simply suck down cash, of course -- General Motors just revealed that Google was its mysterious infotainment partner. In the final hours before Google I/O, we sat down with GM VP Nick Pudar to tell us what the future thus holds for OnStar. As we saw in January, GM's already developing smartphone apps for the Chevy Volt on iPhone, Blackberry and Android that will let you remotely lock doors, honk the horn, check tire pressure and more.... But sometime after the Volt launches, Google Maps Navigation will be integrated into the smartphone app, and we got a hands-on tour. Check out the new interface and hear about GM's strategy after the break.

Sprint’s Hero finally gets official Android 2.1 upgrade

Assuming you resisted the temptation to either root your Hero or update it with the recently leaked 2.1 firmware, this is your very first chance to finally slap on a dash of Android future on your senescent device. Sprint has at long last made the update available, though it isn't quite yet ready to download from its site. Fear not, the good folks behind the yellow network have put together a guide on upgrading through your phone and we'll link up the download as soon as it's ready for consumption. Time to start enjoying that Google Maps Navigation magic and all the other goodies constituting Eclair's delectable filling.

OnStar reveals mystery partner: Google
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsGoogle I/O's shaping up to be a hell of an event this year. We just received word that OnStar will give a sneak peek at new functionalities it's developing for its version 2.0 Chevy Volt app with the help of Google. A major new addition -- to be demonstrated on Android, of course -- will be a navigation tab on the app's home screen that can identify your position relative to your Volt's location in Google Maps. Something that should prove handy in tracking down your car in the airport parking lot. Owners can then use their smartphone to enter their destination before even entering the vehicle. When it's time to drive, your Volt will already be setup and ready to guide you to the spot using OnStar's turn-by-turn navigation. Alternatively, users can follow the voice guidance provided by Google Maps Navigation if they prefer. Unfortunately, these 2.0 addition won't be in the app at launch this fall. Google Maps for Android adds bike routes, sharing, dedicated navigation icon
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsIf you're running an Android phone and you're lucky enough to be using 1.6 or above (our deepest apologies, CLIQ owners), we might recommend you pop open the Market and score the latest version of Google Maps that just launched today. What's new? It adds support for bicycle routing (something they've had on the desktop for a while now) and sharing of destinations via the usual array of mediums like email, Facebook, Twitter, and so on, but the most significant change might also be the smallest: the addition of a dedicated icon for Google Maps Navigation. The product is still in beta, but this seems like an early sign that it's starting to come of age -- and on a more practical level, this obviously makes it quite a bit easier to launch right into a route when you saddle up in the car. Anywho, Motorola, about that CLIQ update?

Garmin-Asus today announced their second Android-powered phone, the A10 (for reasons unknown, they're seemingly not calling it a nuvifone).
Just like the nuvifone A50, the device aims to be a pedestrian navigation device (as in, for pedestrians, not a boring navigation device), and will come with Garmin's navigation software and maps pre-loaded.

Google Street View camera car tagged with GPS sensor, stalked around Berlin

The story here is that someone secretly affixed a GPS tracker on a Google Street View camera car and you can follow the car's progress using Google Maps while it's photographing the streets of Berlin. Sort of ironic, isn't? But either the car seems to be stopped or Google caught wind of the stalkers because I haven't seen any progress the last few minutes. Or maybe they're eating.
