David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake, explains why the Metal Gear movie died

The Metal Gear movie is not going to happen. We've known this since January, but now some of the folks that were to have been involved are speaking out. Chief among the speaker-outers is David Hayter, the English voice actor of Solid Snake (and a successful Hollywood writer in his own right, having written (or co-written) such films as the first X-Men movie and The Watchmen ). Hayter says what we've all "known" for a while, that Sony Pictures and Konami simply couldn't agree on a number of things, including money. Hard to make a movie without money.

What’s the deal with Red Dead Redemption?

Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption came in the mail on Tuesday, and my first course of action was to call the Ron and Fez Show on Sirius XM. “Hey, guys, I see your names in the credits. You rock!” Calling the show and talking to East Side Dave (by the way, SAVE DAVE) and Ron was [...]

Video: This is the Red Dead Redemption launch trailer

Once upon a time I heard an EA so-and-so, in a totally unofficial capacity, say something to the effect of “western games never sell.” I guess we’ll find out soon enough with the release of Red Dead Redemption. This is the official launch trailer. Will the game be as big as Grand Theft Auto? Maybe not, [...]

  • Yet another violent video game debate (but one that doesn’t demonize games per se)

Yet another violent video game debate (but one that doesn’t demonize games per se)

There was another "are violent video games evil?" debate yesterday, this time on BBC Radio in the UK. (We sure do cover a lot of UK-centric news here, don't we?) A group called Mothers Against Violence, whose goal is the complete eradication of violence (OK...), debated games journalists, the radio show hosts, and the video game industry in general. The debate wasn't as silly as you may automatically think, with the anti-violence group coming down on parents rather than violent video games in general. You know, "Be parents for once!"

  • Will Australians finally be able to buy video games for a change?

Will Australians finally be able to buy video games for a change?

What do I know about Australia? Not much—I know Jim Jeffries is from there. In recent years, Australia to me has always been associated with weird censorship and video games being banned left and right. Those days may soon be behind us, as Australia seems to be inching closer toward an R18+ rating for video games. That would mean that, instead of outright banning violent games, they could only be sold to adults. Pretty shocking that it has taken until 2010 for that to be the case, but what are you gonna do?

Pretty random rumor: Sony plans to re-launch the PSP Go with price cut, marketing blitz

My idea of market research is to browse various message boards to get a sense of what the people think. I recently found myself on a PSP message board—I'm a baller, you see—and discovered that the kids there (I assume they're kids) now refer to the PSP Go as the PSP No. So yeah, Sony would do well to re-launch that bad boy.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the fastest single-console game to reach 10 million sold

Can we agree that Modern Warfare 2 was an average shooter, just one that happened to be backed by a gigantic marketing budget? It wasn't bad, certainly, but the story was bat-shit crazy—Red Dawn was more plausible—and No Russian was so clearly developed to spark controversy. This is why this Mario story warms my heart so. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is now the fastest-selling game on a single console to reach 10 million units sold worldwide. The previous record holder was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

TenYears: The best console games of the decade

It’s almost January 1st, 2010 and we’ve been mulling over our favorites of 2009 – and the previous decade. Here we present another installment in our “Of the Decade” lists. • America the beautiful: Mother calls 911 because her kid was playing GTA past bedtime. Yeah.

America the beautiful: Mother calls 911 because her kid was playing GTA past bedtime. Yeah.

Gotta love cops. A woman in Boston got mad at her 14-year-old son for being up at 2:30am playing Grand Theft Auto. (At least the kid wasn't smoking dust in the street at that hour.) In fact, she got so mad that she called 911 for help. You know, "You have to help me. My son is up in the middle of the night playing video games! I don't know what to do!" The cops responded, no doubt aggravated that they hadto deal with this garbage, by saying, "Calm down, ma'am. Just put your dumb kid to bed." That's not an exact quote, but you know that's what they were thinking.

Wherein we discuss Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony

Let me preface this by saying that I could be the worst GTA player on Planet Earth. I don't know if my thumbs just can't twiddle like they used to when I was a spry 16-year-old. I don't know if the sandbox “oh my god everything is happening all at once~!” style of gameplay is exacting its revenge on me for some previous offense I committed in a past life. I simply don't know what's up. The bottom line is: I completely stink on ice when it comes to all things GTA.
