    Samsung, T-Mobile announce :), Gravity 3, and Gravity T — yes, we said :)

After bizarre names like Rant, Corby, and Clubby, it appears the phone industry has finally buckled into a state of chaos -- a state where words no longer exist at all. Samsung has brought a new trio of midrange text-centric devices to T-Mobile today, starting on the left with the :) (we're told "Smiley" is an acceptable substitute, thank goodness) that features a portrait QWERTY slide, Exchange support, and a 1.3 megapixel camera; it goes for just $19.99 on contract. Moving up the ladder a rung, the Gravity 3 naturally replaces the Gravity 2 with both a numeric keypad and slide-out landscape QWERTY keyboard, 2 megapixel cam, and full HTML browsing for $49.99 on contract. Finally, the Gravity T is basically a touchscreen version of the Gravity 3 with basically identical specs other than the 2.8-inch full touchscreen; it goes for $74.99 on contract. All three are available today.

Would a Lava Lamp work on Jupiter?

Interesting question no? Would something so simple like a lava lamp work at the higher gravity found on Jupiter? The easy solution would have been to just do the research, crunch the numbers, and get an answer. This clever YouTube jockey decided to do it the hard way: he built his own centrifuge out of [...]

  • WIND Mobile launches in Canada, T-Mobile gets a spectrum buddy

WIND Mobile launches in Canada, T-Mobile gets a spectrum buddy

Despite some last-minute drama with the government, Canada's WIND Mobile has launched today, bringing to the table an interesting new low-cost competitor to the nation's giant incumbents, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Though its network -- based on last year's AWS auction -- lacks the footprint of the bigger guys, the pricing is pretty compelling: its $15 voice plan offers twice the minutes of low-cost competitors Koodo and Fido (which are really just fronts for Telus and Rogers, anyway) and CAD $35 (about $33) wins you unlimited data on your BlackBerry. Speaking of BlackBerrys, WIND is rolling out the Bold 9700 as one of its launch devices alongside the HTC Maple (known as the Dash 3G in the States), the Samsung Gravity, the Huawei U519, and the E181 USB modem. Service is only live in Toronto and Calgary at the moment, but the limited distribution doesn't seem to be holding people back -- WIND's site has been up and down all morning.

AT&T desucks the 3G in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs: Home to 415,000 people, scary-ass gravity-defying boulders, and, as of this morning, AT&T’s 850 Mhz 3G Network. As we saw in San Francisco and New York last month, Colorado Spring’s towers have now been tweaked to dedicate the 850 Mhz spectrum to 3G data rather than TDMA, which theoretically ups the number of simultaneous [...]

HOLY CATS! IT’S A SHELF FOR STUFF BEHIND YOUR APPLE COMPUTER!

Sweet jumping Jehosaphat on a carbon rod! LOOK AT THIS! It's a shelf! That holds stuff! Behind your Apple monitor! It costs $29.95 and it is so amazing I had to look at this image twice just to remind myself of the feeling of fear and awe I felt when I saw this the first time. This thing "uses two adjustable clips and gravity to literally perch on the desk stand of iMacs and Cinema Displays." LITERALLY PERCH! Unless my brain deceives me - and it has - this concept is so new it's not even patented yet.

  • Swatch to release Turn to Him and Turn to Her tourbillons

Swatch to release Turn to Him and Turn to Her tourbillons

A little bird sent us these images Swatch's upcoming Tourbillon collection, the Turn to Her and Turn to Him. I don't have much information but I do know that Swatch used to make automatic mechanical movements but stopped some time in this decade. This new movement appears to use a rotating cage to move the balance wheel in a full rotation around the central stalk, a design decision which differs from the standard stationary tourbillon cage. This looks like a limited edition movement and the guy's model is beefier than the iced-up ladies' model. It seems to come in a limited, numbered edition and may be similar to the special edition tourbillon sold quite a while ago.
