They got their first Android phone (the G1) out last October, and managed to launch two more (the myTouch and the CLIQ) within the year. It makes sense, then, [...]

  • Sony Ericsson Q3 slump buoyed by new financing, a rumored November launch for XPERIA X3

Sony Ericsson Q3 slump buoyed by new financing, a rumored November launch for XPERIA X3

Bad news, good news, and potentially great news time, folks. First with the bad: Sony Ericsson posted another loss for its fiscal third quarter, to the tune of 164 million euro (about $244 million US), blaming a large chunk of that on a drop in sales. Sales dropped year-over-year 40 percent to 1.6 billion euro, and unit shipments comparably down 45 percent. That's the bad, now what's good for SE is that its secured more financial backing to reshape its future into something more profitable. External financing totals a reported 455 million euro ($676 million US), 255 million of which is already in the company's position and 200 million as a two-year backup. SE also managed to beat analyst estimates, losing less than anticipated, and that's gotta induce some bittersweet smiles in the corporate boardrooms... oh, the potentially great news? Well, SEMC blog has boldly announced that the Android-imbued Rachael (a.k.a. XPERIA X3) is due out this November, same specs as we heard before and two color options, Sensuous Black and Luster White. Unfortunately, we're not seeing exactly where this news is coming for, so until SE speaks the magic words, we're considering it a rumor for now -- but we're hopeful.

HTC working on a stylus for capacitive screens?

Meat digits. Sausage fingers. Call them what you will, but some people’s hands are just a bit larger than others. “Finger friendly” for one person doesn’t necessarily mean “finger friendly” for another. As of late, the trend in handsets has been toward capacitive touchscreens, which is bad news for the big-boned; while the screens [...]

  • The Zune HD: September 15. Apple iPod Event: Likely September 8.

The Zune HD: September 15. Apple iPod Event: Likely September 8.

A lot of people today are excited about the new Zune HD. And that's great news for Microsoft, as it has been attempting for a few years now to even just steal some buzz from Apple in the MP3 market, if not sales. Well, they've succeeded in the first part, but the second? That could be much more difficult. Microsoft's new device sounds great: OLED screen, HD radio, HD video (720p) outputs, powerful Tegra chip, and most importantly a iPod-beating price of $219.99 for the 16 GB variety, and just $289.99 for the 32 GB version. That latter is a $110 savings over the comparable iPod touch, which the Zune HD clearly targets. And now it has a very real release date: About a month from now, September 15. Are the planets aligning for a hit version of the Zune, finally? Not so fast.

Hands-on with the official Verizon update for the Blackberry Storm

Great news: The Blackberry Storm is finally usable. Most of our issues with the phone were resolved with the first official Verizon update for the Storm. It's now a quality phone that's worthy of the BlackBerry name. As of Sunday, May 31, the update is available via either directly from the support section of VZW.com or from an OTA download. We downloaded the update over the air yesterday and it took about 2 hours for the 19MB update - the servers were probably running at full capacity. Once it finished downloading and installing, we were instantly pleased.

  • DuPont crafts ultra longevous OLED materials, which likely won’t be affordable

DuPont crafts ultra longevous OLED materials, which likely won’t be affordable

DuPont's been dabbling in OLED advancement for years now, and while the world waits for the introduction of market-ready big-screen OLED HDTVs, engineers at the miracle-working company are toiling away to make sure those very sets last quite some time. For anyone following the OLED TV scene, you'll know that luminance longevity has been a nagging issue, but if new developments pan out, stamina will be the least of our worries. In fact, the firm has crafted a green light-emitting material that can purportedly push onward for over a hundred years... continuously. Furthermore, the same scientists have engineered a new blue light-emitting material with a luminance half-life of 38,000 hours along with a red light-emitting material with a life of 62,000 hours. Unfortunately for the laypeople out there, we can't imagine this stuff being even marginally affordable -- but hey, it's great news for the sybarites!
