A Calm, Reasonable Argument Supporting Apple’s Anti-Flash SDK Language

Gruuuuubeeer! Why do you force us to listen to your reasoned, intelligent arguments explaining the odd language in the new iPhone SDK guidelines outlawing outside iPhone compiling methods, including .NET and Adobe’s own Flash-to-iPhone tools? If we follow Godwin’s law to its obvious conclusion, we can only say that you are a collaborator with enemy [...]

  • In the end, the Apple anti-porn crusade is about image, not money or “offended ladies”

In the end, the Apple anti-porn crusade is about image, not money or “offended ladies”

Remember that whole porn crackdown that nobody cares about anymore? Wonder why it happened? It wasn’t the money. It wasn’t hypocritical. It wasn’t about defending the rights of women to browse the app store unflustered. It was about image. Here’s Gruber’s cogent and true argument: I think what Apple was getting squeamish about wasn’t the sexy [...]

  • Dear AT&T: If your network is so great, why don’t you marry it?

Dear AT&T: If your network is so great, why don’t you marry it?

The Gruber does it again. In a point by point analysis of Randall Stross’ article about AT&T not really sucking and actually being great, he points out a few valuable concepts. First, if the iPhone sucks so much on AT&T’s network, why hasn’t AT&T made Apple fix it? Unless AT&T is so afraid of Steve [...]

The Google Phone identifies as an early replicant

The Gruber brings us this bit of news: the new GPhone identifies as Nexus One in browsing logs. Five points to anyone who can remember what the Nexus models were? • Another day, another Apple Tablet rumor or How I stopped worrying and learned to love the Tapplet UPDATE

Another day, another Apple Tablet rumor or How I stopped worrying and learned to love the Tapplet UPDATE

It's nice that the Apple Tablet - we're calling it the Tapplet - rumors are circulating. August is a horrible time for tech. There's not much out there right now, just a few headsets and some early back-to-school stuff. The retail refresh hasn't hit - that comes in about October - and the Interwebs are quiet. It's great to have a little bit of frisson in our lives, something to put on our Christmas lists. With that we present today's Tapplet rumors. First, we have rumor of a September 7 event at Apple HQ for music devices. This is Apple's traditional time for releasing new music gear. It's just before back-to-school and it gives them a little time to get stuff into the retail space by October, just when kids are starting to break the iPods they got last year. So what could it be? Could it be a new iPod? iPods with cameras? Or it might be... UPDATE - Whoa, now Gruber knows about the new iPods:
the new camera-equipped ones Apple is set to announce next month (16/32/64 GB for $199/299/399).

    Apple censors iPhone dictionary app

In another fascinating move by the App Store acceptance team (Motto: Lunch is tasty! Is that a butterfly? We like cake.) the Ninjawords pocket dictionary, a $2 app, has been given an 17+ rating after being censored by Apple. This ensures that tittering schoolboys won’t scroll through the app and discover bad words like “tits,” [...]

  • What Steve said about the App Store and why we need to suck it up

What Steve said about the App Store and why we need to suck it up

We’ve been screaming and whining about the iPhone App Store for nigh on a year now and we seem to have avoiding talking about one of the most obvious sources for information about the Store: Steve himself. Harry “Long Tail” McCracken remembers what Steve said way back in the old days about the App Store. Jobs [...]
