iOS to make its desktop debut with next iMac revision?

The deal is that Apple wants to bring touch controls to its desktop offerings, and will use the next iMac revision to test the waters a bit. So, you'll have your standard Mac OS X installation, but then when you activate “touch screen mode,” you'll switch over to iOS.

Everyone agrees that Apple will announce the next iPhone later today. but what's it going to be called? You know as much as we do at this point. My money is on iPhone HD, but that's based off of nothing besides pure speculation. Apple could opt for the 4G monikor if it indeed packs the goods for the next-gen network. Or it could be something entirely different. Leave your guess in the comments below.

EVO 4G launch day antics: Sprint’s computers overwhelmed, Radio Shack listing CDMA iPhones?
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsYou might imagine that we're getting a pretty wild variety of EVO 4G-related tips today, seeing how it's launch day and all -- but a couple really stood out for us:
- Sprint's activation system is apparently buckling under the pressure, an issue that's giving us nightmarish flashbacks to iPhone launches of days gone by. We've even heard reports of poor shoppers being "turned away" when reps are stymied by the situation. A wildly successful product is both a blessing and curse, is it not?
- We've gotten multiple tips saying that Radio Shack now lists a $400 early termination fee in its contract for the iPhone on Verizon and Sprint. Our guess is that this is just some generic verbiage, not a sign of an impending CDMA launch, but you never know.

Dude emails AT&T CEO, offered a Cease and Desist for his troubles

Hey, guys! Guess what happens if you try to send an email to the AT&T CEO? AT&T sends out their lawyers and threatens you with a cease and desist letter.
A guy named Giorgio G. emailed AT&T asking about rates and whether he can get an iPhone upgrade. Obviously, Randall Stephenson isn't in the customer service game so he doesn't want silly emails like that. So AT&T's executive response team called Giorgio back threatening a C&D.

This is interesting. Engadget's live at D8 where Microsoft is showing off Project Natal. The funny thing is that the hardware looks surprisingly polished, a lot more so than the previous versions we've seen. Everything from the paint scheme to design cues scream production unit. But why spoil all the fun when E3 is just over a week away -- unless Microsoft is showing off something a lot bigger than Natal. That's our guess.

Microsoft Tag fills your world with tags that you scan for information

The tags, almost like barcodes or QR codes, are placed all over the place. On merchandise at the mall, on statues at the parks, and so on. You scan the tag with your phone, then all sorts of info pops up.

Altek teases ‘Leo,’ monster 14 megapixel smartphone for unveiling next month
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsWe don't have a lot of detail to work on here, but Altek -- a company that's no stranger to ridiculous optics slapped on the back of a phone -- is chatting up its new Leo model that will officially bow at next month's CommunicAsia show in Singapore. It's being ominously called a "smartphone" without talking about the platform at hand, but judging from the key layout, we're going to fathom a guess that it might be running Android. Around back, you have a zoom lens parked in front of a 14 megapixel sensor that's capable of 720p video capture, and the support for WiFi and HSPA alike should help you ferry those shots to where they need to go. Pricing, availability, and other pertinent details will hopefully follow -- but for now, follow the break for another teaser shot along with Altek's PR.

Via Labs is showing off its 4-port USB 3.0 host controller at Computex

Via first showed off its USB 3.0 host controller at CES 2010 and it just broke cover at Computex. The VL800 series chip can handle four USB 3.0 devices simultaneously while providing data rates up to 5Gbps. Via aims to put this single chip solution into desktops, notebooks, servers, and everything else on God's green earth.

LG Ally release pushed back a week for reasons unknown

You remember those Android 2.1-powered LG Allys that were supposed to go on sale with Big Red earlier this week? Yeah, well, they didn't, and Verizon's site is still showing them as pre-orders. We're not sure what's going on there, but pre-orders are being extended through the 26th with sales commencing on the 27th; folks that have already pre-ordered the phone are apparently getting emails explaining the situation and letting them know that they'll be "the first to receive the phone upon initial availability on or after May 27th." The "or after" part there seems to be giving them a loophole in case they need another delay -- so this could be a last-minute software issue, supply problems, some sort of wacky marketing stunt, or a stunning heist involving the theft of every Ally that has been imported to the United States thus far. HTC Glacier, LED, and Vision among next round of vague codenames?
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsStart that wild imagination of yours running, because you're going to need it to make sense of this little tidbit. A tipster who claims (and gives us visual evidence as proof) that he was able to root out HTC product names like Incredible and Legend months before release on some sort of internal component bidding site has sent us a new shot showing three names we haven't heard before: "Glacier," "LED," and "Vision." Vision is listed with "TMO" next to it, suggesting it's coming to T-Mobile -- though we've no idea whether that's referring T-Mobile's European or American branch, which typically operate with virtually zero overlap. Glacier sounds like a phone that's either really slow, really cold, or is rapidly disappearing due to environmental forces beyond HTC's control, and LED sounds like... well, Light Emitting Diode. Yep, your guess is as good as ours.
