The very instant it was announced that HP had purchased Palm,one idea set the hearts and minds of geeks everywhere aflame: webOS-powered tablets. webOS is a wonderfully glorious OS, hindered only by half-baked hardware - strap that thing onto a big ol' slab of glass, and you've got my money.
Aaaaand sure enough, that's one of the things that HP's got lined up, along with... something else.

Western Digital has sold more hard drives this year than Seagate

Five hundred and fifty eight million hard drives were shipped in 2009. Think about that for a moment. Five hundred and fifty eight million. Of those, 175.2 million (or 31.4%) carried the Seagate brand name while 165.2 million came from Western Digital. According to The Information Network, WD pulled ahead in the first quarter of 2010, selling 51.1 million hard drives compared to Seagate's 50.3 million sold. I guess that's big news, if you're really into hard drives, or have strong brand loyalty to the drive in your computer. Me, I don't care so much.

While the iPad may be too confusing for the British, that's not stopping UK retailer Marks and Spencer from rolling out a mobile version of their website. I guess if you're the kind of person who shops at Marks and Spencer this might be good news for you. And while m.marksandspencer.com is not a particularly mobile-friendly URL to key in, the site does helpfully explain upon your first visit how to make a home screen icon from Mobile Safari by pressing the + icon.

Fourth generation iPhone teardown reveals A4 microprocessor

No, not the "N90" codename indicating that it's from Apple's next generation GSM iPhone, the other text. If we're not mistaken then we're seeing "339S0084" on that chip from today's fourth-generation iPhone teardown. Guess what? According to Chipworks, that's the Apple A4 microprocessor fabricated by Samsung and the presumed work of Apple's acquired PA Semi and Intrinsity engineers. The "APL0398" text is also the same as that found on the iPad's A4 system-on-chip. The other markings differ however. What that means isn't entirely clear yet but we're digging.

Last Halo 2 Xbox Live player signs off
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsMicrosoft had tried to shutdown the original Xbox Live servers, but a couple of Halo 2 stalwarts had refused to log off! I guess Microsoft couldn't turn the servers off, or wouldn't, while people were still connected? No matter: the last Halo 2 Xbox Live player has signed off. We wish him well in his future endeavors.

Visa and DeviceFidelity working to bring mobile payment functionality to iPhone

This ain't the first rodeo for Visa and DeviceFidelity, and if we had to guess, we suspect it won't be the last. Just a few short months after teaming up to bring contactless payments to any mobile with a microSD slot, the two are at it again -- this time aiming for the oh-so-tantalizing iPhone market. Reportedly, the tandem is toiling away in an effort to concoct a protective iPhone shell with a secure memory card that hosts Vista's contactless payment app, payWave. As it stands, the product would only function on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, leaving upcoming iPhone 4G / HD / Barhopper buyers out in the cold. As with any other payWave-enabled handset, this would allow users to simply tap and go when checking out, a process that our pals over in Japan have had down for centuries now. Barnes & Noble and HP join forces to launch specially branded online bookstore

Blizzard will add Facebook integration to Battle.net

Blizzard just announced that its Battle.net service will soon hook into Facebook, "linking the world's premier online gaming platform with the world's most popular social platform." The synergy begins with the release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, which is currently scheduled for release in July.

What you see here is the Bionic Handling Assistant, a sort of robotic arm designed to improve the interaction between humans and robots. Clearly this thing was inspired by Doc Ock from Spider-Man, right? There can be no doubt! Look at those articulated arms. Look at those pincers. Look at the sheer menace these things give off!
