Videos: Sony attacks Apple with new (and pretty stylish) Walkman series
Posted on September 16, 2009 | No Comments
About two weeks ago we reported Sony's Walkman (kind of) outsold the iPod in Japan for the first time in four years, and now Sony steps up their efforts in the portable media player arena by officially introducing the Walkman A [JP] and S series [JP, pictured]. Sony says their twelve new devices are specifically aimed at "young customers". Both series display lyrics that scroll as a song is played and have to be downloaded from the web (costing between $0.15 and $0.25 per text).

Seagate listened, releases the updated the FreeAgent Theater+ HD
Posted on September 15, 2009 | No Comments
When Peter Ha reviewed the original FreeAgent Theater HD, he loved the UI and the ease of use with the external hard drive. What he didn't like was the lack of video file support and that it was called HD but didn't have an HDMI output. Thankfully Seagate payed attention because the new FreeAgent Theater+ HD now plays back pretty much everything: MPEG-1, VOB/ISO, MPEG-4, DivX HD, Xvid HD, AVI, MOV, MKV, RMVB, AVC HD, H.264, WMV9, VC-1, M2Ts, TS/Tp/M2T. Plus, the new model also has an HDMI output and a Ethernet jack. Peter can't complain now. (but he will anyway)

Your iPhone 3GS can play 1080p video just fine (but will Apple let you?)
Posted on August 21, 2009 | No CommentsGo ahead, I dare you to explain to me the utility you derive from playing 1080p video on your iPhone 3GS. A post on a Chinese forum suggests that the phone is perfectly capable of playing 720p and 1080p when encoded with H.264; Apple currently limits playback resolution to 640x480. The angle right now is, “How dare Apple artificially limit the resolution that we can play?” Well, one, it's Apple, what do you expect and, two, can image how quickly the battery will deplete when playing 1080p video?

Samsung cracking away at an 800mhz Armani 2?
Posted on July 14, 2009 | No CommentsWhen it comes to “luxury” brand handsets, the original Samsung Armani is one of the less ridiculous choices you could make. It is, in every sense, the exact opposite of the Dior phone. It has actual features that people might want, isn’t mindblowingly ugly, and doesn’t cost 5-friggin’-thousand dollars. We’re not sure how well the [...] -
LaCie Ruggedized, Portable HD Movie Player
Posted on July 10, 2009 | No CommentsA hard drive is a hard drive is a hard drive, right? You store things on it and buy another one as a backup, for when the first one breaks. True, but the hard drive makers have been making boxes that do more than just hold the spinning platters recently, and one of those boxes turns [...] -
Entire Nikon 2009/ 2010 DSLR Product Roadmap Leaked
Posted on July 9, 2009 | No CommentsThis Nikon product roadmap for the coming year is either the real deal or a fanboy fantasy. Bubbling up onto the internet through a fissure in the Czech forum Grafika On-Line, the document supposedly originates in the UK from an anonymous source at a company that provides Nikon UK with IT services. The huge 37 page [...] -
LaCie’s LaCinema Rugged plays 1080p video for $350
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No CommentsIf money is no issue, and you're looking to play 1080p content—alt.binaries.hdtv.h264 says hi—on your big screen TV, you really ought to look into getting a proper PC, one with one of those fancy nVidia GPU that you can use to hardware accelerate said Blu-ray rips. That being said, it looks like LaCie just came out with a stand-alone device that should play most of the HD content you “find” online. Oh, it's called the LaCinema Rugged HD, and LaCie wants $350 for it.

Review: BT-1 Bluetooth Webcam
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No Comments
If there is one gadget that really caught my attention this year, besides the Palm Pre, was the BT-1 Bluetooth Webcam from Ecamm Network. The BT-1, which won Macworld Best of Show, has received much praise since its announcement at Macworld and I was quite excited to open it up and give it a try.

Nvidia plugin decreases Adobe Premiere Pro H.264 video encoding time by 11 times
Posted on June 29, 2009 | No CommentsGood news for you Adobe Photoshop (and other Creative Suite applications) CS4 users who just so happen to have a high-end Nvidia GPU. Nvidia released today a bunch of plug-ins for Adobe CS4 (both PC and Mac) that leverage the power of your GPU. For example, one such plug-in, Elemental Accelerator 2.0 for Windows, taps into your Quadro GPU to help encode video faster. Encoding H.264 video with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 while using the plugin improves encoding time by 11 times. (Mac users will have to settle with Elemental Accelerator 1.2.)

Video: Hands-on with RealPlayer SP
Posted on June 24, 2009 | No Comments
Assuming you’re a Windows PC user, RealNetworks RealPlayer SP app makes transferring any video to your mobile device a piece of cake. It’s currently in Beta for Windows users with support for Macs coming by the end of the year.
For $40 you can upgrade to the RealPlayer Plus SP, which supports h.264 video conversion, DVD playback and DVD burning. Grab the Beta here and test it out for yourselves.
Netbooks are too underpowered, notebooks are too bulky and expensive – “SILENCE!” shouts VIA. All hail the new “NetNote” category, if you please. We’re basically talking netbooks with 10- to 12-inch screens that can handle 1080p HD video without breaking stride.
