  • What’s cheaper than buying an anti-RFID wallet?

What’s cheaper than buying an anti-RFID wallet?

The following is in the interest of saving you money, which is probably my number one goal here at CG: preventing you from spending money when you don't have to. I've seen ads on Drudge recently pimping RFID-blocking wallets produced by a company called Identity Stronghold. The idea behind the wallet is to block the RFID chip found in your credit card from being surreptitiously scanned. Now, I'm sure it's a fine product and one that works as advertised; I have no "issue" with said wallet. But that's partially why you can get away with not buying one: it's fairly easy to disable the RFID chip in your credit card. What do you need? Nothing more than a hammer!

Law firm asks, ‘Were you banned from Xbox Live? We want to help.’

It's safe to say that we hear at CrunchGear think you should be able to do whatever you want with hardware that you buy. Let's take console modding. You wanna flash the drive on your 360 for whatever reason? Fine, go ahead. But don't think that you can log onto Xbox Live with said modded console, and play your misbegotten wares (or is that warez?), on Microsoft's network. It's against the TOS, it makes a mockery of the entertainment medium that you purport to support, and, well, is unfair to the other players.

Wrestling and boxing gong-shaped alarm clocks test your reaction time

Japan and its alarm clocks. We just blogged the bizarre Clockman on Monday, but major Japanese toy maker Banpresto's two new models aren't too normal either. The company has designed alarm clocks using wrestling and boxing gongs as the design motif. The idea actually kind of makes sense but is cruel at the same time.

Samsung responds to Symbian claims, says it’s still supporting it

    Filed under:

Contrary to popular belief (and reports from yesterday), it seems that Samsung actually isn't planning to ditch Symbian anytime soon -- or at least it's not prepared to tell the public. Shortly after announcing its own Bada OS, rumors began to fly that Symbian support would fade in the near future; according to a company representative speaking with Mobile Burn, however, that's simply not true. To quote:
"Samsung is an initial member of Symbian Foundation and continues to cooperate with Symbian Foundation. At the same time, Samsung supports various existing open operating systems including Symbian, Linux, Android, and Windows Mobile. To provide more choices to meet consumers' many different tastes and preferences, we will continue our 'multi-OS' strategy."
'Course, just because it's "continuing" to support Symbian doesn't mean that the hammer won't fall tomorrow, but at least for now it seems the Big S is safe from seeing one of its own jump ship. Phew.

Samsung responds to Symbian claims, says it's still supporting it originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 21:18:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

First look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in ‘Iron Man 2′

In Jon Favreau’s upcoming sequel to Iron Man, Mickey Rourke will be going head to head with Robert Downey Jr. as Whiplash aka Ivan Vanko. The Russian “has constructed his own version of a suit,” says Favreau. It’s unclear whether or not Whiplash will be the same character as he is in the comics (Justin Hammer’s weapons designer), but Favreau likes to mix things up to “play into and against expectations.” So what does Rourke have to say about this character in Iron Man 2; Whiplash “is going to light them up.”
