Google changes Nexus One plans, will stop selling handsets online
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Google_to_stop_selling_Nexus_One_online'; Although Google launched the Nexus One with grand plans to radically change the way consumers purchased phones and service, it looks like the experiment has fizzled to an end -- the company just announced that will eventually stop selling handsets online and instead partner with carriers to sell the N1 in-store while using its website to promote "a variety of Android phones available globally." Google says customers simply want a hands-on experience before buying a phone, but we'd say the lack of subsidies from any carrier except T-Mobile and some serious customer service issues probably played in killing Google's original sales strategy -- and of course, both Verizon and Sprint essentially refused the N1 in favor of the bespoke Incredible and EVO 4G. We'd also say that Android as a whole will remain unaffected, since the Nexus One was never a huge seller, but it's still rare that a company simply gives up a business model like this, and we don't know if Google will ever follow up with a successor to the Nexus One. The Google Phone is dead, people -- long live the Google Phone.
Update: We just asked Google about future devices and support for current Nexus One owners, here's what they said:
On the future: We will continue working with our partners to bring cutting-edge new Android handsets to market, but we have nothing to announce right now.

Samsung Galaxy S and Wave ‘coming soon’ to Vodafone UK
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsPerhaps eager to steal some of the thunder from Everything Everywhere's recent debut, Vodafone has updated its Coming Soon page to show a selection of new handsets, which is highlighted by Samsung's pair of Super AMOLED beasts, the Wave and Galaxy S. The Wave brings the new Bada sensibility to British shores, while the Galaxy S will be pretty much the most advanced Android handset the UK has yet seen. It runs version 2.1 with Samsung's own skin on top, but it's the hardware behind it that'll be pushing Brits to upgrade. Hit the source link to peruse the full list, which also includes the new BlackBerry Pearl 3G, but do remember to be patient -- an Amazon pre-order listing for the Wave (priced at £350, or 521 greenbacks) indicates a one to three month waiting period.

Another day, another 3D-related tech news item from Japan. This time, it's a 3D-powered desktop PC Fujitsu is currently demoing at a two-day company event (Fujitsu Forum [JP]) in Tokyo. It's not only able to display 3D images but also has a 3D camera built-in (just above the display).

Sprint cans Nexus One in favor of EVO 4G
Posted on May 10, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Sprint_nixes_Nexus_One_in_favor_of_EVO_4G'; In light of Verizon's recent decision (or was that Google's decision?) to say goodnight to the Nexus One in favor of the Droid Incredible, we thought it might be wise to reach out to Sprint and get a comment on its own version -- the EVO 4G is just around the corner, of course, and it's lying in wait to cast a long, long shadow over any other Android device in Sprint's lineup. Sure enough, the carrier says that it's now taking a pass on Google's first "superphone," seeing how the EVO 4G is basically better in every respect: WiMAX support, larger screen, better camera, and so on. Of course, this might peeve a few folks who'd prefer stock Android over HTC's Sense UI -- if for no other reason than the fact that Sense-powered devices tend to have wildly longer firmware upgrade lag times than stock ones do -- but otherwise, the move seems to be a perfectly logical one. Oh, and as for that EVO? Weaker Wii sales: Nintendo’s profit drops for first time in 6 years

Nintendo in Japan released its annual fiscal report [ENG, PDF] today, and even though pretty much every financial key figure took a nose dive, things still look pretty good on the whole. The company racked up $15.2 billion in revenue last financial year (which ended March 31, 2010), down 22% from last year. Operating profit dropped 36% to $3.8 billion, while net profit - for the first time in six years - dropped to $2.4 billion, compared with $2.9 billion a year earlier.

AT&T On The iPad 3G Video Restrictions: “That’s something you need to ask Apple”

Today in the U.S. people are getting their hands on the 3G version of the iPad for the first time. The hardware is supposed to be exactly the same as the WiFi-only version except, of course, it has a cell chip in it to receive data over AT&T's 3G network when you're not connected to WiFi. Since the hardware is basically the same, all the apps should function the same, right? Wrong.
Reports are already coming in that some of the most popular iPad apps -- the ones that stream video -- are being restricted on the new iPad 3G. Specifically, the YouTube app scales videos down to a "dramatically lower resolution over the cellular data connection," according to iLounge. Worse, the ABC Player apparently won't work at all unless you connect to a WiFi network, as a pop-up message informs the user. But apparently iTunes Store streaming video previews are working just fine in full resolution. No word on the Netflix app just yet.

This weekend make your own compressed air rocket

I've always loved the compressed air rocket. I bought my son one of the pre-made ones at a science museum and it broke on first flight, which was pretty frustrating. Had I known about this MAKE video, however, I would have built my son one from scratch.

That's right, today the company, which fancies itself as some sort of catch-all, cutting-edge entertainment juggernaut, has bequeathed upon the world WWE Latest, a 99 cent App for the iPhone and iPod touch. It's fairly basic, but should help those of you itching for, I don't know, Diva photos or Raw results. You do know your iPhone has a perfectly viable Web browser, right?

Yes, the good folks over at ZuneBoards have hacked the Zune HD to pieces, giving homebrew developers full access to the hardware, access that otherwise lay behind the XNA development kit.
