Samsung Behold II finally gets Android 1.6 update
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsYes, yes, we know you'd rather get Eclair or Froyo -- but sometimes you've got to be happy with what you've got, and this is one of those times. As far as we can tell, Samsung hasn't budged on its commitment to sunset the Behold II's upgrade path with Donut, but at least 1.6 is finally trickling into the hands of owners this week via a rolling over-the-air update that should wrap up on the 25th. There are a few bug fixes in the mix, too -- so unless you've got a rooted Behold II running 2.2 already, you probably want in on this action. Or... you know, dump this inadequately-supported piece for something running 2.1 out of the box.

Samsung Acclaim arrives in US Cellular stores July 9, we’re sure somebody will care
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No CommentsLooks like we have a small band of US Cellular fans among our numbers, as we've received a slew of tips letting us know that the national carrier has dropped an official release date for the Samsung Acclaim. This most mundane of Android sliders will arrive on July 9, and... well, that's it really. US Cellular hasn't seen fit to entice us with any actual specs or even an Android version, though information floating about the interwebs suggests it has a 3.2-inch HVGA screen and a stock Eclair installation. We'll just have to wait until somebody at Samsung swallows the shame of being associated with the Acclaim and finally gives us some official details.

Microsoft has been hard at work on the the 360 Slim for a while and it's only fair that you pay attention and see what's they've done to improve the original hardware and make the new system run cooler, quieter, and more efficiently.

Panasonic yesterday announced [JP] what it says is the world's lightest full HD camcorder, the HDC-TM35. Sized at 51.5×107.5×57.5mm and weighing just 185g, the device is mainly targeted at women and will be available in white, purple, grey, and "gold".

Qik charging $5 monthly for EVO 4G video chat (updated)
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsLast we thought, that mandatory $10 "premium data add-on" for Sprint's EVO 4G would additionally include YouTube and Qik video chat, and well, we may have been only half right. The gang at Android Guys have what's alleged to be a scan from Sprint's training materials, and according to one image, Qik's gonna cost you another $4.99 monthly via PayPal (not through the carrier) to use. We've reached out to see if we can confirm, but if true, it's a bit of a bummer to see the premiums continuing to add up. At least Fring's Skype video is still free, and as you can see in the video after the break, it works pretty well.
Update: We're now privy to the official May 26th edition of the Evo 4G launch guide and can confirm the $4.99 fee. While Sprint hasn't said anything publicly, it's looking like that fee will stick saving a last minute call from the governor.

TV viewers now refusing to watch SD content?

On the rare occasion when I'm actually sitting in front of the TV looking to "channel surf" (more like "menu surf" nowadays), it's only "HDTV channels" I'm concerned with. Nearly halfway through 2010, it has come to the point where, unless I absolutely have no other choice, I simply won't watch a network unless the program is in HD. Has it come really come to that? That, unless a show is in HD, you'll simply skip it?

Sanyo debuts world’s shortest-focus (and 3D-ready) projector

We're about to get yet another 3D-enabled piece of hardware, and this time, it's a projector. Sanyo's PDG-DWL2500J, announced today in Japan (press release in English), is not only "3D ready", but it also boasts the world's shortest projection distance (just 32cm to project images that are 80 inches in size) for projectors weighing less than 9kg.

DuPont working on cheaper ways to make OLED screens

OLED televisions are notoriously expensive and difficult to make; but like all technologies there is always someone working on making the technology cheaper. DuPont recently announced the development of a new process that prints OLED screens in sheets, much like a inkjet prints on paper.

HTC’s complaint against Apple examined
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsOkay, we've just gotten the full complaint HTC filed with the International Trade Commission this morning, alleging that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod infringe five of its patents and asking for sales and imports to be halted. What's odd here is that HTC hasn't yet filed a lawsuit in federal court, which could mean a lot of things -- HTC could just be banking on the ITC's somewhat faster process to force Apple's hand, or it could be less sure of its patent claims and avoiding the harsher scrutiny of a courtroom in favor of an administrative decision. We can't say for sure what the reasoning is -- but we can read the ITC complaint and break down the claims, and that's exactly what we're going to do. Samsung releases Bada SDK for developers who want to ride the Wave
Posted on May 7, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung still hasn't managed to get the Wave or any other Bada handset to market yet, but it's doing the right thing by offering developers the software development kit first. Granted, with a planned June release Samsung isn't managing the same sort of massive lead-time that Microsoft has with its Windows Phone 7 SDK, but a few weeks of pressure-free coding are better than none. The first public SDK for Bada was just made available yesterday, and inside developers will find an Eclipse-based IDE, a phone emulator, and tutorials. You can get it all for yourself at the source link below, but make sure you get your reading glasses out before clicking through. You'll need to agree to not one, not two, but four separate sets of terms and conditions before you can get this 606MB download flowing, and a fifth before it'll install. Oh, and it's all C/C++ based, so if you've been living in the merry land of Java and C# lately you'd better brush up on pointer dereferencing and interface definitions.

NEC develops eco-friendly, super-efficient CPU cooling system

NEC has developed an eco-friendly cooling system for CPUs, claiming the technology [JP] uses uses 60% less energy than a water-cooling system and even 80% less than an air-cooling system. The core of the system is a liquid chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) substitute, which circulates around the CPU to draw away heat and has low greenhouse effects.
