Vardia: Toshiba announces four new Blu-ray recorders and players

Last summer, Toshiba decided to abandon their self-developed HD-DVD format and to go Blu-ray instead. Soon after, the company started rolling out a few Blu-ray devices here and there, but today Toshiba Japan announced [JP] a flood of new Blu-ray-powered devices. The company is ready to roll out a total of three Blu-ray recorders and one Blu-ray player in the next few weeks.

JVC Kenwood made a pretty interesting announcement today [JP]. Their Ryoma is basically an HD digital TV tuner, BD/DVD recorder, AM/FM tuner and HDD recorder rolled into one. The bad news is you have to connect it with another device called M-LinX (the smaller one in the picture on the left) to access the radio functionality.

It’s official: Toshiba finally went Blu-ray today

They've announced it back in June and executed the plan today: Toshiba is now officially a Blu-ray supporter. The company issued a short press release (in English) today, stating Toshiba has applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The BDA is a voluntary membership group aimed at fostering the development of the Blu-ray format on a global scale.

Toshiba, the company behind the now dead HD DVD format, first talked about joining the Blu-ray bandwagon back in June, but it seems there's no hurry. The company announced a total of three new Vardia DVRs today [JP], and they all use DVDs and HDDs to store data.

Remember HD DVD? The video format developed by Toshiba that lost the format war against Blu-ray? Today Toshiba held a pretty interesting annual shareholder meeting in Tokyo during which president Atsutoshi Nishida didn't say they will revive HD DVD but that his company thinks about producing Blu-ray products.
