Panasonic starts taking orders for its 152-inch, 4K plasma 3D TV
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsJust yesterday, we reported about Panasonic's plan to start selling two 3D plasma TVs (a 42- and a 46-inch model) on the Japanese market next month. And today, the same company announced [press release in English] it will start accepting orders for another batch of three new 3D plasma TVs on July 1. Targeted at "professional users", these TVs are bigger. Much bigger.

Nexus One steps up to 720p HD video thanks to latest hack (video)

The indefatigable coders over at xda-developers have just pushed out a download that allows the Nexus One to start shooting video at 720p resolution. You'll need to have at least CyanogenMod version 5.0.8test3, but once you get your house in order, you'll be enjoying one of the big touted features of the latest handsets on your five-month old Googlephone. Pretty neat, and what's even better is that work is already underway to improve audio and the fps rate, as well as making the code compatible with Android Froyo, it all just requires a bit more tinkering. Panasonic Japan announces two 3D plasma TVs

And yet another 3D news item from Japan. This time, it's Panasonic, which today announced [JP] two new 3D plasma TVs, the 42-inch TH-P42VT2, and the 46-inch TH-P46VT2. Both VIERAs require active shutter glasses to view images in 3D and both feature full HD resolution.

iPhone 4 does 720p HD video, iMovie

A backside-illuminated 5 megapixel sensor is about to grace the new iPhone's rear, equipped with an LED flash and 720p / 30fps video recording. Tap to focus will also be rolled out in the iPhone Quattro, and Steve Jobs is keen to impress on us all that although the megapixel count has grown, the quality of images has apparently improved. That's what they all say. The added functionality of iMovie won't come for free, however, with Apple asking a $4.99 tithe for granting access to its more sophisticated video editing options. This is moving things along, to be sure, but why is the upper limit of storage still 32GB? A more generous apportionment of memory would've gone very nicely indeed with that HD video mode.

Is this the Apple Magic Trackpad? Is WWDC going to be a bust?

Steve just can't catch a break. It sure seems like the item above is the unannounced Apple Magic Trackpad, which just got an unofficial Internet debut just like the iPhone 4G/HD ahead of Jobs' WWDC keynote address later today. Apple might as well pack up their massive banners and simply issue press releases like every other CE company. At this rate, there isn't going to be anything left to announce in Steve Jobs' traditional "one more thing" fashion.

Everyone agrees that Apple will announce the next iPhone later today. but what's it going to be called? You know as much as we do at this point. My money is on iPhone HD, but that's based off of nothing besides pure speculation. Apple could opt for the 4G monikor if it indeed packs the goods for the next-gen network. Or it could be something entirely different. Leave your guess in the comments below.

HTC HD Mini review
Posted on June 6, 2010 | No CommentsWe had to exercise our neglected patience muscle with this one, but at long last we've gotten ahold of a real live HD Mini and put it through its paces. Equipped with the same processor, screen size and resolution as HTC's Legend, but running the HD2's Windows Mobile 6.5.3 under a WinMo-specific Sense skin, the Mini is in many ways an amalgamation of its two better known cousins. You'll no doubt be aware that we weren't too displeased by either of those handsets, so what you must be wondering now is whether or not splicing them into one eminently pocketable package delivers an equally compelling device. Motorola Droid Xtreme pictured yet again, still not announced
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsQuickly becoming the most well-leaked handsets since the next iPhone, Motorola's fine little piece of kit informally known so far as the Droid Shadow / Xtreme has shown up yet again -- and this time, we're getting a great view of that bulbous posterior. The 8 megapixel cam, HD video capture, and dual LED flash are all confirmed, which takes just a little edge off the EVO 4G's reign, we'd say. Competition is grand, ain't it?

Now, I knew this was malware-related because I know Matt knows I wouldn't want an iPad—free or otherwise. Clearly something smelled fishy here. The point is, even so-called techies can be the victim of malware. There's a new scam going around Facebook right now that, while not malicious right now, could well mutate into something not very nice with the flick of a switch.

Samsung Wave shipping with infected microSD card (confirmed, limited to first run)
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsDid you get a Samsung Wave today, or perhaps early last week? You might not want to connect it to your computer, just in case. We're hearing anecdotal reports that the 1GB microSD card shipped with certain German units includes a nasty surprise: it automatically installs the trojan Win32/Heur using the file "slmvsrv.exe." While we're not sure exactly what the virus does or if it's widespread, there's no point in finding out the hard way, right? Install a good antivirus program and then format that sucker, or better yet, simply drop in a larger microSDHC card. Don't forget this thing plays DivX HD, people -- you're going to need more than a single gigabyte of storage.
Update: Samsung HQ got in touch with MobileBurn to confirm the existence of the virus in shipping S8500 Wave handsets, but said that the outbreak was confined to the German market's initial production run and all other shipments are A-OK. Intel demos Android 2.1 on Moorestown smartphone (video)
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsIntel's barking up all kinds of trees (ones planted by Qualcomm, NVIDIA and ARM) with its Moorestown Atom platform, and while it'll be quite some time before we see an Atom Inside sticker gracing the face of a smartphone, the company's making sure the world sees what it has ramped up so far with reference builds here in Taipei. Aava Mobile was kind enough to build a number of prototypes for Intel to showcase at Computex, and while the vast majority were running Moblin, a couple were humming along with Android 2.1 underneath. We were able to get our hands around one here at the show, and while performance seemed decent enough, it certainly didn't floor us any more than a 1GHz Snapdragon has in the past. Granted, we weren't able to seriously tax it due to having no internet connection and no pre-loaded HD multimedia, but casual users probably won't notice a significant boost in screen transitions. Don't take our word for it, though -- jump on past the break for a video of Intel doing Eclair.

CEO Steve Ballmer told the Wall Street Journal something along the lines of, "So what Apple is now the "biggest" tech company in the land. Big deal. We still make incredible amounts of money. In fact, I'm going to go swim in my giant pool of money right now. Talk later." An exact quote? No, but it certainly captures the spirit that Ballmer was trying to convey: let Apple have its moment in the Sun, but we're not doing too bad for ourselves over here, you know?
