Alienware turns to Intel Core i7 CPUs for new M15x notebook, desktops

Alienware said that it was going to “shake the gaming world to its foundation” this week at the Tokyo Game Show. I don’t know if these new rigs really do all that, but they are impressive enough. The new M15x notebook packs an impressive amount of computing power with the new Clarksfield mobile Core i7 running [...]

The xpPhone runs Windows XP and will probably be produced

There is a good amount of quiet hesitation about the xpPhone around the interwebs this morning. It seems that everyone wants to believe that the xpPhone will make it to market, but it almost seems to good to be true. The specs list an unspecified AMD Super Mobile CPU powering the system and it will be configurable with a wide range of SSD and HDD options. But best of all, the company lets you select the 3G module needed for either AT&T, Vodafone, or Orange. That is, of course, assuming the xpPhone will actually be produced even though you can pre-order one today.

Hitachi announces 5 full HD TVs with built-in 500GB HDD

There is a clear trend in Japan, where all the relevant new TVs come from, and that's building devices to store programs into the hardware itself, i.e. HDDs or Blu-ray recorders. Mitsubishi appears to be especially radical in this respect, announcing a TV with both a built-in Blu-ray recorder and HDD just last week. And today Hitachi followed up by adding a total of two new LCDs and three plasmas [JP] to their Wooo TV series, with all models featuring a built-in 500GB HDD.

Western Digital now shipping a 1TB mobile hard drive

WD announced two new 2.5-inch mobile drives this morning in ridiculous capacities. Maybe not ridiculous, but who wouldn’t want a 750GB or 1TB drive in their laptop?!

Yeah, there isn’t much to see here. The new Gateway LT2000 netbook is basicly the same netbook that has been making the rounds over the last two years. There isn’t a single thing to set this netbook apart from the rest of the crowd besides the somewhat attractive color scheme and the Gateway branding. In [...]

  • What good is an Xbox 360 download service when the 120GB hard drive costs $140?

What good is an Xbox 360 download service when the 120GB hard drive costs $140?

One of those highly paid analyst types from Wedbush has gone on record saying that the only thing holding back a true-to-life Xbox 360 game download service, à la Steam, is hard drive capacity. Right now, you can buy a 120GB hard drive for $140 on Amazon, which is ridiculous given the low, low prices of standard hard drives these days. (A recent CrunchDeal spotted a 1TB hard drive for $77.) So if Microsoft is serious about launching such a service, it needs to do something about bringing large capacity hard drives at normal prices. There's no reason that a 120GB hard disk drive should cost $140 in the year 2009.

  • HP unveils Mini 1101, Mini 110 XP / Mi editions with optional HD video accelerator

HP unveils Mini 1101, Mini 110 XP / Mi editions with optional HD video accelerator

HP's got more additions to its Mini netbook lineup coming your way with the 1101 and 110 XP / Mi. All three models sport a 10.1-inch widescreen LED, autosync software for easier connectivity to your primary PC, and the standard 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 / 1.66GHz N280 processor options with GMA 950 graphics, VGA output, 3 or 6 cell batteries, and 802.11b/g. The Mini 110 XP edition takes the trend even further with -- and we're sure you're surprised here -- 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD or 32GB SSD, as well as optional WWAN and a Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video Accelerator, which HP claims will let you watch 1080p video smoothly -- yeah, we'll believe it when we see it. Those who go with the company's Linux-based pet Mi can bump up to 250GB HDD and 2GB memory. As for the Mini 1101, it looks like it's basically the business-centric 110 with XP and Vista as your OS choices and no apparent video enhancer. As for pricing and availability, the Mini 1101 is coming at ya on June 1st with a base price of $329, while Mini 110 will follow shortly after in black swirl on June 10th, and white swirl / pink chic on July 8th. Those will start at $279 with Mi and $329 if you want Windows XP instead.
