    Sonos announces iPad app

I've always had a soft spot in my necrotic heart for Sonos. In the face if iPods, Zunes, mobile phones, and everything else, they've kept pumping out great, compact products for folks with big houses. They've never pretended to be too high-class for the rest of us yet you basically use their products to create soundscapes, just like Disney World, Vegas, and the haunted house I made in my basement as a kid. Sonos just announced their iPad app - probably available in August - that allows you to control your Sonos system on the iPad's bright screen. The app allows you to browse your iTunes and Sonos collection, pick radio streams, and even set different rooms with different playlists. When I tested the Sonos kit I used to like to make my bathroom, for instance, the Drum'n'Bass room to ease evacuation. Video after the jump.

Nintendo and Activision bring back Goldeneye~!

Part of me is stoked that GoldenEye is coming back. But then the graphics look like they are ran off of the original N64 graphic engine. So yeah, it's the classic argument between gameplay and eye candy although I could have swore that it was 2010 and that discussion was somewhat moot.

  • Verizon MiFi surgically implanted in iPad to create world’s first bionic tablet

Verizon MiFi surgically implanted in iPad to create world’s first bionic tablet

Sometimes, hackers hack without any constructive purpose -- they do it just because they can. This, however, decidedly isn't such a case; in fact, it's one of the more enviable hackjobs we've seen in recent weeks. Basically, a dude split open his 3G iPad, removed the AT&T modem, and installed the circuit board out of a Verizon MiFi, providing power from the iPad's battery and hooking in the borrowed AT&T antenna for hotspot range. The hack wasn't without its trials and tribulations -- the MiFi's green LED initially shone through the back of the iPad's display, for instance -- but ultimately, the proud owner ended up with a fully functional iPad that doubles as a Verizon WiFi hotspot. It's not exactly turnkey enough to recommend to lay folk, but at least Verizon customers can take heart knowing this kind of craziness is possible if you've got the stones for it.

    [Thanks, Peter]

Droid Xtreme (or X, or Shadow, or whatever it’s called) caught on camera yet again.

Man - is Motorola just giving out new, unannounced handsets to everyone they see carrying a camera? Between the Droid Xtreme, and the Droid 2, the number of leaks is starting to get silly. With that said, keep'em coming! Today's latest batch of leaked goods comes in the form of gloriously sharp shots of the Droid 2's keyboard-less brother, the Droid Xtreme.

Video: Nike proves once and for all the world needs a bearded Rooney

We’re about three weeks away from the beginning of the World Cup. You know this because I’ve mentioned it over and over again since 2008. Fancy Adidas this, super-advanced Nike that. And so on. Today’s edition: a three-minute Nike advert that was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (of “Babel” fame). Even if you have no [...]

Three variations of the Three Wolves t-shirt meme

The Three Wolves shirt gained fame after it started collecting a bunch of clever reviews, and quickly became a bona fide meme. Once that happened, meta-memes sprang up around it. I liked the broken images variant the best. That is, until today, when I saw the Three Ewok shirt pictured here!

  • LG Ally review

    LG Ally review

You know, not every smartphone has to be putting down maxed-out hardware. That's a lesson that Nokia is certainly taking to heart, concentrating many of its latest efforts on lower-end Symbian devices that it hopes will capture entire new swaths of users that'd otherwise be buying dumbphones with half the functionality (and far less than half of the revenue potential). In the world of Android, though, recent devices like the EVO 4G, Droid, Droid Incredible, and Nexus One have admittedly caused us to grow accustomed to the idea that we should all be using blazingly fast processors and huge WVGA displays.

In reality, of course, Android is an extraordinarily scalable platform; there's a whole world of hardware (and around $200 of on-contract pricing) below today's latest round of "superphones." At $100 on a two-year deal, the LG Ally sort of typifies what we'd expect out of a midrange Android device right now -- a gap-filler that can capture users seeking a Droid experience on a Kin Two budget. So does it hold up in the day-to-day grind, or are you going to be begging for a Droid by day two? Let's find out.

Video: Fujitsu’s care bear robot in action

Last month, we've shown you a teddy bear robot that's made by Fujitsu and looked pretty cute - on pictures. But now, after seeing a video (embedded below) of the bear actually "communicating" with a human, I'm not so sure anymore if it's really a good idea to use this to entertain elderly or younger people (the robot's target group).

Developed by the Nakasuka Lab at the University of Tokyo, the pico satellite (four inches) is currently orbiting Earth and keeps posting [JP] various data to its followers on Twitter.

Sprint Hero NOT Getting Android 2.1 on May 7th

Although I'm sure you're used to the disappointment by now, it pains me to tell you this: the Sprint Hero won't be getting its much-hoped-for update to Android 2.1 this Friday. A Sprint Community Administrator has closed the thread where the original rumour surfaced, stating:
"Closing this thread because I don’t want folks to think that 2.1 is coming out on the 7th."
So, there you go. Pick your heart off of the floor, and go back to your shattered Android dreams (of electric sheep).

Daniel and Everett thank us profusely for our Internet largesse

It's not often we get thanked for stuff we do here, so this little email this morning was quite refreshing. I posted a link to Daniel and Everett's show yesterday as part lark and part serious exploration into the blossoming and inevitable sad decline of the young journalist (I'll see you kids at the ulcer doctor!). However, Daniel took the time to drop me a note this morning and it warmed by sclerotic heart. It reads:
