Google Maps for Android adds transit departure times, Latitude friend suggestions
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsOne of Google's favorite pastimes is shoehorning bits of new functionality into Google Maps for Android, probably because... well, because it can -- updating a package on its own mobile platform is a heck of a lot easier than, say, getting Apple to add a feature to its Maps app. To that end, version 4.3 has just rolled out with three major additions: aggregated (and color-coded) business reviews broken down by topic, transit system departure times, and suggested friends for Latitude. We'll admit, we occasionally forget that Latitude exists, so this seems like a timely addition to get it back into the spotlight -- and if you live in New York, Chicago, or another city with a sprawling bus and subway system, we're sure you'll be amped about the schedules. Now if those times were actually correct, that'd be really mind-blowing.Google Maps for Android adds transit departure times, Latitude friend suggestions originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 19:52:00 EST. Spain’s David Villa: That second goal against Poland was something out of a video game
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsContinuing with our (well, my) nearly non-stop World Cup coverage! Spain beat Poland yesterday 6-0 in Murcia. It was an awesome display, and an illustration of why Spain are the favorites to win the tournament. And yes, there is a tech connection~! That second goal, my word...

Motorola Milestone gets close to custom ROMs — even without an unlocked bootloader
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No Comments
Motorola Milestone owners still haven't managed to get the phone's bootloader unlocked, making custom Android ROMs (Froyo, for example) a whole heck of a lot more difficult -- but not impossible. It seems that the community is getting close to successfully employing a "kexec" solution, meaning a new kernel would be executed on top of the stock one without rebooting -- and from there, fully customized builds are basically a shoo-in. Motorola doesn't seem to be budging on a proper bootloader unlock, so it's good to see everyone involved is coming up on a workable alternative.

Bigelow Aerospace building first private space station
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsThe federal government can't be bothered with space exploration anymore (which is terribly disappointing, by the way), so private industry has to pick up the slack. A company by the name of Bigelow Aerospace plans to put an entire space station in orbit within the next four years.

Critical Adobe flaw: Still want Flash on your iPhone and iPad?
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsAdobe has warned users that a critical flaw exists in its Flash, Adobe Reader, and Adobe Acrobat software, and it affects every single platform—Mac, Windows, Linux, Solaris, you name it. Should a "hacker" exploit the flaw, he or she could take control of your entire system. Not to defer to Apple's wisdom, but do you really want such a flaky piece of software running on your iPhone or iPad?

Kindle DX failing out of Darden Business School
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No Comments
According to Ars Technica, Darden Business School students are unhappy with the Amazon Kindle DX in terms of academic usefulness. That's not to say that they're down on the DX in general: there's pretty high support amongst Darden students for the DX as a personal e-reader. It's just not quite the classroom supplement that Darden administration had hoped it would be.

Sony sales numbers reveal surging PS3, waning PSP
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsSony just released the numbers from the last fiscal year (April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010). The good news (for Sony and its shareholders, at least) is that PS3 sales were up quite a bit from the previous year, going from 10.1 million sold to 13 million this year. The bad news is that PSP sales have hit a bump in the road, going from 14.1 million in to 9.9 million. Translating those numbers into English, that means that the PS3 is doing a heck of a lot better than it ever was, and that the PSP, well, isn't.

Verizon’s Pixi Plus drops to free on contract
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsSay what you will about the Pixi Plus; it may not be the best smartphone in the world, and heck, it might not even be the best webOS device on the block. But you know what? When your net cash outlay is a big, fat zero, it's pretty tough to argue -- especially when you've got dumbphones running $20, $50, $100, or even more. On that note, Verizon dropped the Pixi Plus from $30 to $0 on contract after rebate this week, which makes a pretty compelling case for the thing -- if nothing else, you could just use it for its free mobile hotspot service and pay $50 less upfront than you do for a MiFi (granted, you'll be paying more month to month, but... you know, you've got an actual phone). Now, here's our question: with this kind of insane price pressure, what comes next after free?Verizon's Pixi Plus drops to free on contract originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 12 May 2010 23:59:00 EST. Good idea? Internet voting coming to U.S. elections for military, overseas citizens
Posted on May 9, 2010 | No CommentsThis is probably a case of where the idea is sound but humans will no doubt muck everything up. Thirty-three states here in the good ol' U.S. will allow military and overseas citizens to vote via the Internet beginning with the mid-term election in November. This is being done in part to ensure that overseas voters' votes, you know, count. I don't know how many of y'all have ever lived overseas, but it's probably easier to find Jay Leno funny than it is to obtain a ballot, then have it count. It's 2010 and we still don't have simple things like voting figured out. Amazing.
