AT&T announces the Samsung Captivate, their version of the Galaxy S Android superphone

Remember a few months back, we used our super-Internet-sleuthing abilities to break the news that AT&T would eventually be getting a Android handset that was oh-so-similar to the just announced Samsung Galaxy S? Say hello to the phone in question: the Samsung Captivate.

  • Emblaze’s First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware?

Emblaze’s First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware?

We have word from an industry insider that the First Else handset running the ALP OS is in trouble. Not a surprise since Emblaze, the company behind the handset, has been dead quiet about Else ever since CES where it promised a March beta and Q2 launch. From what we hear, the software simply isn't ready and Emblaze has been unable to sign on any major carriers as the components continue to age inside a cellphone first demonstrated in November of 2009.

We've also been told that Emblaze has instructed its employees not to speak to the press about First Else. And indeed, when we called the number that formerly belonged to the Emblaze Mobile marketing manager we were greeted with a very casual "hello" without any mention of the company or the person with whom we were speaking. After confirming that we were indeed speaking with Emblaze Mobile, we related the news about First Else and were promptly transfered to the voicemail of Emblaze's legal representation. Curious don't you think? Your move Emblaze.

Microsoft Tag fills your world with tags that you scan for information

Say hello to Microsoft Tag. It's a brand new service (I guess you can call it a service) that envisions a world filled with tags. The tags, almost like barcodes or QR codes, are placed all over the place. On merchandise at the mall, on statues at the parks, and so on. You scan the tag with your phone, then all sorts of info pops up.

Confirmed: Motorola i1 will be Boost Mobile’s first Android phone

Back at CTIA 2010, Motorola announced the world's first rugged Android handset with iDEN push-to-talk functionality: the i1. At launch, Motorola was only willing to spill the beans on one carrier who'd be getting the handset: Sprint. We just unearthed some pretty irrefutable proof that someone else will be getting the i1: Boost Mobile. Yep -- say hello to the first pre-paid Android handset in the US.

Mystery Motorola Droid (Shadow?) spotted with Verizon branding, set to be starting somethin’

Why hello there... you. Over at the HowardForums, a certain "wnrussell" has uploaded a picture of what looks to be a Getting Started manual for a Verizon-bound Motorola Droid that we can't recall ever seeing before. There's unfortunately no other information provided at the moment, except maybe a hint from the filename: Shadow. Is this the same 4.3-inch phone we've been seeing rumored for some time now? At any rate, we gotta say, this is a pretty attractive device -- and if that's a new hue for Motoblur, we're all for it. Now how about pulling out a secret slide-out keyboard to make our lives complete...

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Orange and T-Mobile become Everything Everywhere (in the UK)

Orange and T-Mobile become Everything Everywhere (in the UK)

We did ponder how you can rename the Orange and T-Mobile coalition (topical word, eh Britain?) without offending either party, and the strategy seems to have been to just go for a name so bombastic that it overshadows all other concerns. Say hello to Everything Everywhere. Such is the strident new moniker attached to the joint venture between the French and German telecoms, with the justification being that the resultant "super-network" will be the biggest in the UK and therefore capable of providing both universal coverage and limitless services. We'll see how that works out, but for now it's important to note that the high street brands won't be changing. T-Mobile and Orange will retain their separate identities (and eye-searing color schemes), while offering you all the synergistic benefits resulting from the scale of the new company. Full PR after the break.

  • Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro lands FCC approval

Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro lands FCC approval

We can imagine the conversation going something like this:

"Hello, FCC speaking. How can I help you?"
"Hey, Sony Ericsson here. So basically, we took this phone you guys already approved, and just... you know, slapped a keyboard on it. We cool?"
"Well, no, we aren't 'cool.' Go ahead and submit another set of test results and we'll get back to you."
    "But..."
"...no 'buts.' Just do it." (click)

And that, you see, brings us to this filing for the Vivaz pro. It's not a North America-bound version -- there's no 850 / 1900MHz or AWS 3G -- but at least it'll get you some high-speed data if you're in 900 or 2100MHz markets (read: Europe). And heck, it might even make an original Vivaz owner or two jealous in the process.

Hello, Moshi: a voice controlled alarm clock

moshiI've been wondering how long it'll be before we start talking to all our appliances and gadgets, just like the gang on Star Trek talks to their computers. Typing, pressing buttons, waving wands around in the air: it's all so inefficient! We should be able to simply speak to our gadgets to have them do our bidding. Today we're one step closer to that golden Utopia, with Moshi, the voice controlled alarm clock. Fun video inside!
