Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsAs official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we've all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen's backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That's only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let's retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia's higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we're still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we'd totally understand.Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 May 2010 07:27:00 EST. Drumroll, please: Android 2.1 now (finally) available for the Sprint Hero
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsNever again! Never again do we have to write about Android 2.1 coming to the Sprint Hero. Why? Because it’s here. Though never officially given a date, the Hero 2.1 update was pinned on dozens of leaked purported dates — all of which were either false or missed due to delays. At long last, all that [...] -
Sprint’s Hero finally gets official Android 2.1 upgrade
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No Comments
Assuming you resisted the temptation to either root your Hero or update it with the recently leaked 2.1 firmware, this is your very first chance to finally slap on a dash of Android future on your senescent device. Sprint has at long last made the update available, though it isn't quite yet ready to download from its site. Fear not, the good folks behind the yellow network have put together a guide on upgrading through your phone and we'll link up the download as soon as it's ready for consumption. Time to start enjoying that Google Maps Navigation magic and all the other goodies constituting Eclair's delectable filling.

HTC Hero spied with Cox firmware?
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No Comments
We've known for some time that Cox -- a name traditionally associated with cable television -- is on the cusp of turning over its trial CDMA networks in a handful of markets to the public as it marches towards LTE on a swath of 700MHz bandwidth, but what we don't know is the kind of hardware selection we can expect once these guys go live. Take it for what you will, but it seems that an unbranded CDMA HTC Hero that looks suspiciously like Sprint's version of the handset has just changed hands on Craigslist, and -- you guessed it -- it's got a Cox splash screen when you power it on. Cox's strategy boss said just last week in an interview with Light Reading Cable that there'd be Android devices in the mix for the launch, but he played coy when pressed on details; the Hero could certainly be on the short list, but doesn't it seem a little long in the tooth to kick off a brand new network launch? Of course, this could be a hoax or a cobbled-together prototype to help test the trial network, so we'll just have to hang tight and see how this cookie crumbles; in the meantime, follow the break for the damning video evidence of the Cox Hero in the wild.

Android 2.1 upgrade for Sprint’s HTC Hero leaks out
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsOkay, so the Moment's Android 2.1 upgrade is official -- great. But what about the Sense-powered Hero? There's no firsthand word just yet other than the promise of a Q2 release, but there is a firsthand ROM (seemingly) floating around that gives us hope we'll here something from Hesse and crew any day now. Oh, yeah, and there is the cool part about being able to just grab the binary now and get your upgrade on without waiting, if you're as brave and impatient as we tend to be around here. Let us know how it goes, folks.

Samsung Moment gets Android 2.1 update from Sprint, Hero users promised to be next
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsHey, hey -- what do you know? If you're a Samsung Moment owner on Sprint, you know exactly how glorious it feels to have and hold Android 2.1, which Sprint has confirmed to be rolling out to handsets as we speak. Notably, a tweet on the matter has the carrier promising that Hero owners will be "next" to see the same update, but sadly a time line wasn't given. Enjoy and hang tight, respectively.Samsung Moment gets Android 2.1 update from Sprint, Hero users promised to be next originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 May 2010 15:24:00 EST. It’s official: Android 2.1 now available for the Sprint Samsung Moment
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No Comments
Well, that was one wild journey. After a dozen or so false starts and a seemingly endless gaggle of leaked memos making promises that couldn't be kept, Android 2.1 is now officially (really!) available for the Sprint Samsung Moment. Still no word on the update for the Sprint Hero. You hear that sound? Thats the sound of a million Hero owners collectively grinding their teeth.
The good news for Moment owners doesn't come without caveats, though.

Android 2.2 to feature USB + WiFi tethering as standard
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No Comments
Our motherblog, TechCrunch, found out today that the Froyo-flavoured (and bloody fast) Android 2.2 will feature USB and WiFi tethering as standard.
This will give users the ability to access their phone's 3G connection by either physically connecting the phone to their laptop external-USB-modem-stylee, or over a temporary WiFi access point beaming out from within the phone's magical inner chamber.

One more time, or the next installment in the Hero upgrade saga
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No Comments
Ok. I'm very nearly at the point where I don't want to keep posting on this, but I'm eternally optimistic, so here goes:
An internal Best Buy Document has leaked all over Android Central's best shirt, claiming that the Android 2.1 upgrade date for the eternally neglected Sprint Hero will be the 21st of May.

Android 2.2 sets Android 2.1 on fire. From the friction. Because it’s so fast.
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No Comments
Man oh man. While it may just be benchmark scores at this point, this kind of speed increase is nothing to snuff at.
Ian Douglas has run some benchmarks on his Froyo-powered Nexus One, and it's scoring almost 5 times better.
To be a bit more specific, an Eclair-powered Nexus One usually scores around 6-7 MFLOPS in Linpack benchmarks, but this shiny new Froyo build delivers a blistering 38-40 MFLOPS.

Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris getting Android 2.1 any time now
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No Comments
We'd been hearing rumors lately that HTC's Droid Eris -- a phone that has never quite made it out from under the Droid's shadow -- is in the midst of being discontinued by Verizon, but the imminent launch of an Android 2.1 update might just buy it a new lease on life. In fact, the update makes this phone just about the first Hero variant anywhere in the world to be graced with an upgrade to Google's latest and greatest stuff, beating Sprint's version thanks to a string of delays that have pushed it out to some unidentified period in the second quarter. We've yet to see any reports of folks actually receiving the update notification on their devices, but Verizon's official support Twitter account is tweeting about the upgrade -- which should fix numerous bugs on top of the hotly-anticipated Eclair boost -- so we'd expect it to start hitting the wild shortly. Keep us on top of your experiences in comments, won't you?
[Thanks, Richard]
Update: Verizon has now posted the PDF changelog for your perusal while you wait. Thanks, Michael V.!Verizon's HTC Droid Eris getting Android 2.1 any time now originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 May 2010 15:08:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Android 2.1 coming to the Verizon Droid Eris tomorrow?
Posted on May 10, 2010 | No Comments
Boom! We woke up this morning to a handful of e-mails in our tips inbox, all saying the same thing: the Droid Eris should be getting Android 2.1 beginning tomorrow, according to an internal memo sent out to select retail employees.
Pics or it didn't happen, right? Fortunately, one of the tipsters was nice enough to grab a shot of the memo for the lovely folks at home.

Sprint: Android 2.1 for Hero and Moment “to be available in Q2″ (Read: Not Today.)
Posted on May 7, 2010 | No CommentsHurray! The Sprint Hero is getting Android 2.1 on May 7th! Wait, no it’s not! Sprint has never named a specific date on which their Hero and Moment handsets would be getting Android 2.1, beyond a tweet promising them sometime in the second quarter. A few signs were pointing to a launch today — but [...]
