iPhone 4: One man’s heroic video journey

The iPhone 4 comes out today. I knew when I woke up this morning I felt a disturbance in the Force! Anyway, John Biggs, noted gumshoe, is en route to the fancy Apple store in Manhattan to pick up his very own device, and he's been been sending us surprisingly funny video updates of his journey. Come, let us view these videos over a spot of tea.

Photos and videos: CrunchGear visits Japan’s biggest Otaku party (CGM Night)

Japan's most famous Otaku culture blogger Danny Choo invited video games/anime/manga/Cosplay/figures/maid cafe fanatics from all over the country last weekend, and about 200 showed up at Digital Hollywood University for the eighth "CGM Night" (here's my report on the last one). The idea is to bring Otaku and geeks out of their rooms and socialize among people of their kind. Needless to say, I was one of them (I live in Tokyo).

Hollywood should take notes from this fan-made Alien vs Predator flick: AVP Redemption

Apparently one dude spent 2 years and only $500 to make this 22 minute AVP video. The graphics aren't anything special, but what's important is that the story is solid and a lot more true to the saga than Hollywood's interpretations. Give it a go after the break. It's good.

Microsoft, News Corp in talks over Xbox Live channel (but it’ll cost you $1 or $2 extra)

Would you be willing to pay an extra dollar or two per month for Xbox Live if you were able to watch live TV on it? That's what Microsoft and News Corp. execs are currently contemplating, with the two companies in talks over bringing a "young, male" channel to XBL. Now, this is all rumor and speculation, so no need to freak out if you're diametrically opposed to the idea.

Government Accountability Office: Don’t believe piracy studies because they’re wicked flawed

You know how you read stories that say the U.S. loses X-amount of jobs per year due to piracy, or that this or that industry loses zillions of dollars per year because of piracy? The Government Accountability Office just released a new report that says that all of those reports are flawed and are completely worthless. In other words, the next time you hear the MPAA say “Downloading that DVD rip will ruin the movie industry” you can safely say, “Really? Where's the proof

There will be a Red Faction movie. Let that sink in for a moment.

Wow, someone has been tricked into making a Red Faction movie. That blows my mind. I base this on the first Red Faction for the PS2, which I don't recall enjoying at all. Maybe it'll be the first time we say the opposite of, "Eh, the book was better."

Justice? 80,000 Americans facing copyright-related lawsuits

We haven't really progressed beyond the year 2004, have we? With respect to copyright news, I mean. The latest: the "US Copyright Group" has filed suit against 20,000 BitTorrent users, with a cool 30,000 lawsuits now pending. If you total all the various different "Hollywood" (you know what I mean) lawsuits, that means that 80,000 Americans now face some sort of traffic-lawsuit.

Yes~! There will be Independence Day sequels, Will Smith will be all over them

Nice, another sci-fi movie story. 'tis a grand day, indeed. The story is a two-parter: one, there will be an Independence Day 2 and Independence Day 3. That's insane enough. Two: Will Smith will be in both. Loving the creativity coming out of Hollywood these days.

RealNetworks settles RealDVD lawsuit: Has to cough up $4.5 million, stop supporting the software

Right around the time the world's financial markets started to collapse, back in 2008, RealNetworks, the folks behind RealPlayer, released RealDVD. It was a short-lived piece of software that made making DVD movie backups fairly painless—too painless for Hollywood, which immediately took RealNetworks to court, claiming all sorts of copyright infringement hokum. That's all in the past now, for RealNetworks has settled with the six "major" Hollywood studios to the sum of $4.5 million. Ouch.
