Hands-on with Honda’s U3-X, the amazing people mover
Posted on April 6, 2010 | No Comments
Step aside Segway, because this is amazing. This U3-X is a tiny unicycle like people mover designed for folks with debilitating injuries or problems walking. You sit on it, put your feet on a pair of pedals, and move your body to move forward, backwards, and even side to side. It's amazingly small and lasts one hour on a charge.
Jimin and I tried the U3-X in a ballroom in Times Square and both of us came away impressed. It is completely self righting and to ride it you just move your body in the direction you want to go. The wheels-within-wheels system allows for 360-degree motion.

Earlier today, we've covered Honda's U3-X, and now we bring you another mobility robot from Japan. What we have here is a robotic skateboard, which was developed by the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo. And no, it's not really a fun project. That DIY Segway skateboard is about to get some serious competition.

New video shows Honda’s U3-X Personal Mobility Robot in its full prototype glory
Posted on March 31, 2010 | No Comments
Remember the U3-X Mobility Robot from Honda we blogged about last year? Well, the auto-unicycle is still a prototype, but Honda has just released a new (and pretty interesting) promo video on its official YouTube channel. The company says the U3-X can run continuously for one hour on a single (lithium-ion) battery charge and can be recharged via a conventional 120-volt power outlet.

P4: Honda’s Asimo humanoid gets a re-design after 13 years
Posted on March 23, 2010 | No Comments
Honda’s Asimo is probably the world’s most famous humanoid robot. The company today leaked the first technical details and pictures of the fourth version of Asimo, the P4. And the new and improved Asimo, which took 13 years for Honda to develop (P3 was unveiled in 1997), looks much more elegant and human astronaut-like than the previous models.

DIY: Motorcycle cowling increase mileage, decrease sex appeal, exponentially
Posted on January 28, 2010 | No Comments
This particular DIY project makes sense. It's been proven that in order to increase the MPG on your motorcycle (or scooter in this case), all you need to do it add a cowling. Cyclists use this concept in increase speed, the solar powered cars use this, it makes sense. That still doesn't mean that you should do it, at least, not in this color.

The Ariel Atom, a $40K face melter
Posted on January 2, 2010 | No CommentsThis thing is only 20,000 GBP or about $40K. It uses a Honda Civic R-Type engine with a supercharger. It clearly will kill you sooner than later, although because it’s a car you’re not dealing with the possibility of sliding under a truck. Amazing stuff. Here’s the product page. If you get one, do tell us [...] -
JO-ZERO: Super-agile, super-cool mini humanoid (video)
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No Comments
A big problem almost any robot nowadays has is limited agility. While this isn't an issue for industrial and other "practical" robots, humanoids can only move in a slow, mechanical and chopping motion. Honda's Asimo, for example, is considered super-advanced, but doesn't move too elegantly either.
But Japan-based Himeji Softworks raises the bar in that area. Their JO-ZERO robot kit shows we haven't reached that Nureyev level of elegance yet either, but it's pretty impressive, especially since it's the brainchild of a small venture. It can break-dance (sort of) and pull off a number of cool stunts.
