Official HTC step-by-step video for disassembling the HTC HD2

Well this is interesting. Generally end users need to rely on 3rd party manuals and a bit of experimenting to tear apart a gadget. But this appears to be an official HTC guide for disassembling and reassembling the hot HTC HD2. Chances are HTC didn’t release it, though. Many thanks goes out to the enterprising [...]

The F-35 Lightning II could land in your front yard

The video above shows off the fancy-pants landing system in the new F-35 Lightning II. Notice the massive hatch just behind the cockpit that helps slow the aircraft down for shorter runways. Of course if that doesn’t work, there’s always the vertical-landing mode on some models where it really could land in your front yard [...]

  • Review: The Torch, a $300 flashlight

Review: The Torch, a $300 flashlight

Let's be honest for a moment: an awful lot of the stuff we cover here at CrunchGear isn't really necessary. All the silly USB gadgets, geek gizmos, and other doodads are fun to own, but don't make your life demonstrably better. So I was pretty excited when I was given the opportunity to review the Torch from Wicked Lasers. Billed as the world's brightest flashlight at a whopping 4,100 lumens, this seemed like the kind of thing that might be worth having. I mean, who doesn't like flashlights? They're great for when the power goes out, and to take camping, and are a generally practical gadget that does make your life better. Read on for the details about the Torch.

US government launches Distraction.gov, wants to scare you straight (video)

European countries may have long ago banished the use of cellphones while driving to the dark side of the law, but many of the United States persist in allowing their citizens to talk while driving. One reason for their reluctance may be that outlawing something that has become second nature to most people would be both unproductive and tough to enforce. So what do you do? The natural alternative to forcing people to drive attentively is educating them of the reasons why. Never mind the fact that we all kinda, sorta know the risks we undertake while operating a Droid and a Dodge concurrently. The newly minted Distraction.gov is chockfull of scaremongering statistics, topped by a truly epic video which we've handily stashed for you just after the break. Go get it while it's hot.

  • How would you change Motorola’s Droid?

How would you change Motorola’s Droid?

The anti-iPhone. The phone that "does." The first Motorola device that we've seen in years that's downright awe-inspiring. Naturally, we're referring to the Droid. VZW spent all kinds of money to hype up this Android 2.0 handset as the phone to get if AT&T's 3G coverage was just too weak for your liking, and it seems to have been at least decently effective. We know the phone had its fair share of quirks right off the bat, but we're happy to say that most of those nuisances were taken care of via firmware update. Still, we know geeks, and those suckers are never happy. If you were in charge of redesigning this thing, what aspects would you tweak? Is the slide-out QWERTY up to snuff? Is the display crisp enough? Are the transitions snappy enough? Do you wish it was impossible to turn off the "Droid" sound emission each time you received an email? Dish out your hot fury below.

  • Nook shipments pushed back again? Nearly impossible to cancel orders?

Nook shipments pushed back again? Nearly impossible to cancel orders?

We just got a troubling tip from a concerned Nook buyer. I say buyer because he still hasn't received his Nook. He ordered the Barnes & Noble ebook reader on November 12 and the device was originally supposed to ship on November 30th. But you may recall that date was pushed back to December 11th Frustrated by the delay, he successfully completed the cancellation process on BN.com only to get an email several hours later that stated his order cannot be canceled because it "has entered the shipping process" even though according to B&N's own website, the Nook will not ship for another three days. Now that's some bull.

LG Lotus 2 gets caught on camera, touchscreen and all

Way back in early October, we broke the story that an LG Lotus 2 was in the works. At the time, more than a few people didn’t seem to believe that a followup to the original Sprint Lotus would rock a touchscreen on the face. This morning, pics of the device have surfaced, and whaddya [...]

Smart Alarm wakes you up early when the weather turns bad

I don’t often find myself writing about new Alarm apps here on MobileCrunch, primarily because there are roughly 9 billion of them. This one is too clever to not mention, though. There’s nothing quite like waking up in the morning 20 minutes before you’ve gotta be at work, only to walk outside and find your car [...]

LG’s Monaco (IQ) spotted in Telus garb, rocking WinMo 6.5 and Snapdragon

It's been a hot minute since we've heard anything about LG's Monaco, but now it seems as if the wait for this to transition from presentation slide to reality is almost over. Unfortunately, Windows Mobile 7 won't be onboard as previously rumored, but prospective Telus customers can look forward to LG's S-Class interface sprucing things up somewhat. Other specs purportedly include a Snapdragon processor, WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, though nitty-gritty details beyond that are nil. Peep that read link if you're lusting for a few more angles, and don't kid yourself -- you are.

An asteroid almost smashed into Earth, and we only knew about it 15 hours before it happened

Did you hear the news? An asteroid passed within 8,700 miles of the planet on Friday. The craziest thing is that scientists only knew about it 15 hours before it flew by. So if you have any confidence that this planet is safe from giant space objects smashing into the surface, possibly destroying all life in the process, well, think again.

  • LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010

LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010

It's looking like LG will be offering an Android phone boasting Qualcomm's hot Snapdragon chip -- which has recently squeezed its way into handsets such as the Xperia X10 and Acer's Liquid. The new LG mobile phone is expected for the Korean market in the second quarter of 2010. While the device is still unnamed and specs are still a mystery, LG is promising that the device will be "more mature" than the GW620 Eve, an Android device announced earlier this week for Rogers in Canada. There's no solid word on what availability of the device will be like, though LG says its considering possibilities outside of Korea.

QVC selling Wii bundle for $80-$140 more than you ought to pay

I think we've learned something today: not to buy stuff off the TV. QVC was selling, last night, a Nintendo Wii, Go Play Circus Star Games, and a bunch of accessories (golf club, tennis racket, etc.) QVC wanted $362.97 for the bundle, but if you look at the retail price for all this, it comes out to $239.97. Yes, that's a $140 premium. For what?
