Microsoft’s Oprah moment: You’re all getting Xboxes
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No Comments
Although there was plenty of news coming out of Microsoft today, the most interesting move is their decision to begin shipping the brand new XBox - it's basically the old XBox with 802.11n Wi-Fi, a 250GB hard drive, and Kinect support - the same week they announced it. It's not quite same day, but it's close.
However, another treat came when they announced all the media at their press event will be getting XBox 360s immediately and that they would be showing up at their domiciles and places of business posthaste.
These sort of giveaways are common at developer events (well, actually just Google IO) and I suspect they'll become more popular in the coming months. Gear is so cheap to build and ship that it almost makes sense to blanket the evangelists with it. Whereas the old model of "selective releases" works for some products - Apple, in particular excels at this - the XBox team is dealing with an entrenched base of hardware users who will be loathe to swap out their old XBox, provided they're not RRODed.
Update: Now with video!

Sprint EVO 4G is officially Sprint’s fastest-selling device
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No Comments
Sprint have just proudly announced that their new hotness, the EVO 4G (reviewed here and here), has beaten the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct to become their fastest selling device ever.
And by "beaten" I mean "obliterated": the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct were tied as Sprint's previous best sellers, but the EVO 4G sold more than three times as many units in it's first day than the two of them did combined over their first 3 days.

Hard at work? Congress spends all day playing with the iPad
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsThe iPad is a huge hit in the United States Congress. I mean, passing any sort of meaningful banking reform is apparently out of the question with these guys , but there's always time for the iPad. Just amazing, really.

Cellphones purportedly used more now for data, Gossip Girl blasts than calls
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsEver notice how easy it is to find mobile plans with unlimited minutes these days? Yeah, it's because they're about as valuable as pea coats in the dead of summer. With more and more consumers disconnecting their landlines in favor of using their cellie for everything, the art of communicating via voice is also becoming lost. According to "government and industry data" cited in a New York Times report, the growth in voice minutes used by consumers has "stagnated," with 2009 being the first year ever in which the "amount of data in text, email messages, streaming video, music and other services on mobile devices [in the US] surpassed the amount of voice data in cellphone calls." Dan Hesse, Sprint's head honcho, even chimed in with this nugget: "Originally, talking was the only cellphone application; now it's less than half of the traffic on mobile networks." We also learned that the average length of a mobile call was just 1.81 minutes in 2009, a drop from the 2.27 minutes per call seen in 2008, with many individuals feeling that other communication methods (email, SMS, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) were far less invasive of someone's time, being that they could respond to those messages at their convenience. Of course, on the Upper East Side (where all the richies use Verizon dumbphones, apparently), we get the impression that yakking away about a cornucopia of drama is still the hotness.Cellphones purportedly used more now for data, Gossip Girl blasts than calls originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 May 2010 18:01:00 EST. Layar Launches Store for Augmented Reality Layers
Posted on April 29, 2010 | No Comments
Augmented reality is being touted as the new hotness. I'm sure most of you have heard of the augmented reality browser, Layar. Basically, Layar offers a window through which to view the world, where handy hints and information are displayed over the top in real-time.
The Amsterdam-based company released Layar last year for both Android and iPhone, and a number of interesting "layers" have already made their way into the application. The layers mentioned in that post were created by interested developers, but today, Layar opened up a store for selling layers.

Old and busted: e-ink; New hotness: e-skin
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No Comments
E-ink is cool, sure, but it's still largely a black-and-white technology. Philips Research has moved into the color realm with what they're calling e-skin. “The first applications using the technology could be e-skins for small devices such as MP3 players or cell phones. However, the technology is highly scalable,” says Kars-Michiel Lenssen, Principal Scientist at Philips Research. The vision from Philips is an e-skin on your portable device that can be changed to match your outfit or your mood with the press of a button.

T-Mobile nabs HTC’s Touch HD2, schedules release for November
Posted on November 2, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, T-Mobile
WinMo folks, we wouldn't blame you for getting a bit of Android envy after last week's DROID onslaught, but if there's one thing that could make people pine for your OS it's HTC's HD2, and T-Mobile has just confirmed it's coming on November 9 -- a mere weekend after Moto's new hotness hits Verizon. Mind you, there is some confusion going on here, as the picture on T-Mo's site is of the old Touch HD, not the HD2 we met and loved, and the mention of "loads of applications to download from Android Market" is particularly perplexing. But, we've been told to go ahead and blame a bumbling marketeer rather than to expect some sort of cross-platform app marketplace love fest -- groovy as that may sound.
Update: We've also just learned that HTC is going to officially launch the HD2 on November 4 ahead of a November 11 release elsewhere. We're not entirely sure what there is left to learn about the thing, but we're always game for another press event.
Update 2: Just to clarify things, this is T-Mobile UK. Also, as many have pointed out in comments, we're now thinking the "09" above means 2009, not November 9, which likely points to a November 11 release. Surely you can swallow that DROID envy for another two days, yeah?
