Here’s an idea, stop including standard A/V cables with Blu-ray players

Manufacturers, let me save you some money. It won’t be much, but something is better than nothing. But more importantly you would be helping out the consumers actually spending money on your products. So please, stop including standard A/V cables with Blu-ray players. We don’t need anymore of them, thankyouverymuch. Every household in America already [...]

Reading Lamp Holds Books, Shuts Itself Off

This late-night lamp takes your laziness and turns it into a virtue. When you are propped up in bed reading and you can no longer keep your eyes open, let alone fumble for a light switch, just drop your book on top of the bedside light. The wedge-shape of the Reading Lamp will let your [...]

    World’s First Liquid-Cooled Lightbulb: What’s The Point?

The HydraLux lightbulb is, according to its manufacturer Eternal LEDs, the world’s first liquid-cooled bulb. Liquid cooling is usually reserved for machines which need to shift a lot of heat, and fast: Car engines, high-end gaming rigs and Cray supercomputers. So why an LED lightbulb? It seems that it’s little more than a gimmick. As the [...]

    Impossible-To-Describe Clock Spins and Points

There is more than one way to skin a clock: Our own soft-haired and sensitive Daniel Dumas prefers the indecipherable blipping LEDs of Tokyo Flash watches, I rock an old school Casio calculator watch, and Wired.com editor Dylan Tweney actually measures the hour using the shadows cast by the handsome crags on his perfect face [...]

Someone is really excited about Comcast’s digital switch

Didja know that Comcast is slowly forcing people into digital cable. Yeah, it’s true. I first wrote about it in November of last year and I’m still upset about it. I understand that the switch will net everyone more HD stations and faster Internet, but it also forces digital boxes onto millions of TVs, which [...]

The making of Pitfall! for the Atari 2600

PitfallThe first video game system in the Aamoth household was the Atari 2600. My parents bought it used from our next door neighbors, wrapped it up, and put it under the Christmas tree. Pitfall! was one of the handful of games that accompanied our new-to-us Atari. If you're over the age of 30, you may have played the game more than a few times. Even if you're under 30, you've likely heard of Pitfall! or played one of the many remakes.

How do you convince the elderly to go online? Should you even bother?

Believe it or not, but some people actually refuse to go online! (I say we salute these people for being so brave.) This news comes to us from that Digital Britain report that I've mentioned in the past. It's sort of a Doomesday Book vis-à-vis the UK's participation in the digital world/economy, if that makes any sense. And today's big number: 43 percent of adults in the UK who have no Internet access, either by choice or because of financial restraints, would turn down a free or heavily subsidized Internet connection. Like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino, these people simply have no time for that Internet crap. I mean really, what is this old lady going to do with Twitter?

Transparent public restroom not for those with performance anxiety

As if you didn't have enough to do in the water closet, visitors to this restroom in Lausanne, Switzerland, have one added step: they must actually press the "voir" button to get a little privacy in this otherwise transparent structure. The walls are constructed with liquid crystal glass that becomes see through under electric tension -- which can be triggered via motion sensor, in case all motion ceases for a period of time (napping is not allowed) or if there is too much activity (partying is definitely not allowed). What do you think: Is this a stylish and innovative alternative to the ugly plastic porta-john? Or a disaster waiting to happen? Video after the break.
