HP CEO confirms webOS-powered Slates (but you’ll never guess what else)

The very instant it was announced that HP had purchased Palm, one idea set the hearts and minds of geeks everywhere aflame: webOS-powered tablets. webOS is a wonderfully glorious OS, hindered only by half-baked hardware - strap that thing onto a big ol' slab of glass, and you've got my money. Aaaaand sure enough, that's one of the things that HP's got lined up, along with... something else.

    Video: Palm WebOS, meet laptop

Now, it’s not the mystical HP webOS tablet we’ve all been dying for for what feels like forever (read: two weeks), but it’s a step in the right direction. PreCentral forumgoer cdowers managed to hack webOS onto an old Dell laptop they had laying around — and surprisingly, this “hack” didn’t really require all [...]

  • webOS booted up on a PC, just for kicks (video)

webOS booted up on a PC, just for kicks (video)

It's always been possible to run webOS on a PC using the emulator built into Palm's SDK, but it turns out that the OS image used for the emulator can actually be installed on an IDE hard drive and booted from -- which is exactly what one enterprising member of the PreCentral forums did with his Dell C600 laptop. It's not too surprising webOS can do this, since it's built on Linux, but don't get too excited yet; the OS runs in a funky aspect ratio in a small portion of the screen and the lack of a touchscreen means you're stuck using the keyboard to navigate. Still, it's hard not to watch this without visions of webOS running on all manner of HP hardware in the very near future -- a tablet, perhaps? Video after the break.

Palm Pre Plus launched on AT&T

The boardroom drama behind the HP acquisition wasn't the only Palm news today -- the company also launched the AT&T Palm Pre Plus. No surprises here -- it's going to $149, decidedly more than Verizon's $29 with free Mobile Hotspot service -- but hey, at least it's out there, and you get a free Touchstone in the deal, so that's nice.

HP bought Palm after a five-company bidding war

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/HP_bought_Palm_after_a_five_company_bidding_war_Engadget'; Palm and HP seem like the happiest of corporate couples right now, but theirs was a heated courtship: according to Palm's latest statement to shareholders, a total of 16 companies were contacted about a deal, and HP was the winner of a month-long bidding war that involved serious offers from five companies -- a bidding war that involved Jon Rubinstein personally warning HP that it had to "significantly and immediately" increase its offer to remain in the game. What's more, HP's winning bid came in at just 20 cents a share more than its primary rival. Yeah, it's juicy -- read on for the full blow-by-blow.

Verizon price cuts the Palm Pixi Plus down to free

Downward, downward, ever downward. Verizon just keeps dropping the prices on their Palm devices lower and lower. The Pre Plus dropped from $149.99 at launch to a paltry $29.99, while its baby sister, the Pixi Plus, dropped from $99 to.. the same price as the Pre Plus: $29.99. Weird, right? A technically lesser phone floating around at the same price point as the heftier one? Verizon's gone ahead and patched up that little pricing oddity.

  • Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows 7 Tablet Project

Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows 7 Tablet Project

Hewlett-Packard has killed off its much ballyhooed Windows 7 tablet computer, says a source who's been briefed on the matter. The device was first unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at CES 2010 in January and was supposed to hit the market in mid 2010. But our source tells us that HP is not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system and has terminated the project (something CrunchGear mentioned months ago). HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it's too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7 as an operating system.
