Android 2.1 picks up steam in latest platform stats, 1.5 and 1.6 still contenders
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWe're delighted to see that Android has built yet more momentum behind Eclair since its last platform version distribution report two weeks ago, moving the mark from 45.1 to an even 50 percent of all devices in the field (that doesn't include 2.0 or 2.0.1, which have been swiftly banished from relevance now that all 2.0 devices have received 2.1 updates). Unfortunately, Cupcake and Donut -- versions 1.5 and 1.6, respectively -- simply refuse to die, together accounting for basically all of the remaining half. That's down a little under 5 percent from the beginning of June, though, so at least we're moving in the right direction -- and a couple well-placed OTAs from HTC, Motorola, and Samsung would obliterate most of the remainder, we figure. Version fragmentation is an enemy of this platform, regardless of what Google says -- so let's just fast-track a bunch of Froyo ROMs and put all this talk behind us, alright?

How would you change HTC’s Droid Incredible?
Posted on June 12, 2010 | No CommentsYeah, we called it the best Android device in America during our review back in April, and even today it's somewhat difficult to track down, but that's not to suggest that HTC's Droid Incredible is free of flaws. The Sense-enabled smartphone is the current flagship in VZW's stable, and while the EVO 4G may offer faster connections (in select locales) and a larger display, the Droid Incredible still has its fair share of proponents. This space, however, is where we all take a deep breath, a step back and quick sip of a strong drink. After that, we'd invite you to hit up comments below and tell us how you'd tweak this here smartphone if you suddenly found your way into HTC's headquarters. Would you have stretched the display a centimeter or two? Changed the hardware design somewhat? Made it available with a GSM radio? The options are pretty limitless, so head on down and publish your $0.02. Seriously, what are you waiting for?

HTC EVO 4G’s graphics capped at 30FPS?

Reports are flying in from across the internet -- and by that we mean the xda-developers and Google Code forums -- that the EVO 4G might have something of a framerate issue. It seems that the device is "locked in" at 30 frames per second both in 2D (Canvas) and 3D (openGL) modes, while anecdotally, a phone like the Hero hits 54fps on average and has "smoother scrolling" in the menus. This apparently is visible both with the standard Sense UI installed and with the Froyo preview build, although in the latter case the Nexus One bootup video is 60fps before halving upon reaching the home screen.
So, wherein lies the culprit? For Google's part, Android framework engineer "Romain Guy" responded to one thread reasserting the platform team's "target was, is and will be 60fps." We can't imagine it's related to the hardware given the EVO's impressive specs. Some fingers, ergo, are being pointed towards firmware. This wouldn't be the first time HTC's handsets have come under scrutiny for troubling graphical performance -- 2008 was not the company's finest year in that department. Let's start things off with a disclaimer - I love Android phones. Last year I left the iPhone and switched to Android largely because of the amazing usefulness of Google Voice, and only Android devices truly let you take over your phone with a Google Voice app and have the perfect experience. I have extensively tested nearly all Android phones to date.
Around TechCrunch I'm the die hard Android Fan (Jason Kincaid is a close second). MG Siegler irrationally loves the iPhone and it has become an important fashion accessory and self confidence crutch in his San Francisco hipster lifestyle. I'm pretty sure Apple could remove the iPhone's ability to make calls entirely and MG would still find a way to love it. You can read his review of iPhone 4 here. Summary: "It's Awesome."

Sprint’s HTC Hero rooted, promptly patched over-the-air

Great news: the original Android 2.1 firmware for Sprint's HTC Hero was recently rooted. Bad news: Sprint and HTC were entirely too quick about fixing it, pushing out an over-the-air update this weekend that patches up the so-called "security vulnerability" without a new root yet in sight. Owners of rooted devices are naturally being advised not to pull the trigger on the new build at this time; too bad HTC couldn't have shown this kind of hustle with the 2.1 upgrade in the first place, isn't it?

HTC HD Mini review
Posted on June 6, 2010 | No CommentsWe had to exercise our neglected patience muscle with this one, but at long last we've gotten ahold of a real live HD Mini and put it through its paces. Equipped with the same processor, screen size and resolution as HTC's Legend, but running the HD2's Windows Mobile 6.5.3 under a WinMo-specific Sense skin, the Mini is in many ways an amalgamation of its two better known cousins. You'll no doubt be aware that we weren't too displeased by either of those handsets, so what you must be wondering now is whether or not splicing them into one eminently pocketable package delivers an equally compelling device. Surprise! Sprint's not going to let any silly microSD card bugs taint the day of their big EVO 4G launch. Just hours after Sprint shops around the country started pushing EVO 4Gs to hungry customers, the carrier has issued its first OTA update for this device.
