    The Skiff, she is dead

Not to say I told you so, but I told you so. The Skiff newsreader that made waves at last CES is dead, abandoned by News Corp. who bought the e-reader software but not the device from Hearst. The software will probably be used in News Corp’s “Next Issue Media” endeavor that was supposed to [...]

    Xbox 360 to add Hulu?

From DVR to On-Demand, more and more TV viewers are choosing when they get to watch their favorite programs. The greater question has been how you’ll be able to get all the other content to your screen — stuff like Netflix and Hulu. If you have an Xbox, the latter problem may be a thing of the past.

  • Fox Mobile launches Bitbop beta, a Hulu for your phone

Fox Mobile launches Bitbop beta, a Hulu for your phone

While Hulu might be missing out on the mobile space due to licensing issues, Fox Mobile-backed Bitbop is looking to step in and take the reins. The app, currently in beta and available only for select BlackBerry devices, has 25 content partners including Fox (of course), CBS, NBC, and Comedy Central. It's said to work over WiFi or even 3G data connections and is free so far, though a section in the FAQ intimates that Fox will also launch a premium plan with "unlimited, full-length, network TV shows with no commercial interruptions" for $10 a month, and mobile movie rentals are also apparently on the way. And never fear, Android and iPhone lovers -- mocoNews reports that apps for your smartphone of choice are coming, too. Let's hope Fox gets it working on Froyo, before Hulu kills that workaround.

Fox Mobile launches Bitbop beta, a Hulu for your phone originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 May 2010 21:42:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

  • What would you even do with a 100 mbps Internet connection?

What would you even do with a 100 mbps Internet connection?

About a year ago I signed up for Cablevision's Optimum Online Ultra, and aside from a little snafu that I'm trying to fix right now (don't ask!), it's been great. How could you go wrong with a reliable 100 mbps down/15 mbps up connection? Only $100/month, too. Other ISPs are getting close to offering similar speeds, thanks to Docsis 3.0, but some people are wondering: will people even need that sort of speed, and if so, then for what?

  • Cablevision subscribers: You do know that broadcast TV, like WABC, is totally free, right? You just need an indoor antenna.

Cablevision subscribers: You do know that broadcast TV, like WABC, is totally free, right? You just need an indoor antenna.

Thanks to some last-minute heroics, Cablevision customers here in the Northeast were able to watch the Oscars last night, which aired on WABC, the local ABC affiliate. Cynics have suggested that's because WABC wasn't prepared, no matter how cavalier its previous rhetoric, to give up the night's ratings (and ad dollars) because it wanted to eek out a few more pennies from Cablevision. (WABC had wanted extra money from Cablevision per subscriber, sorta like that Fox-Time Warner Cable feud from a few weeks ago.) But until both sides came to an agreement, people were freaking out: how are we going to watch the Oscars?! Will it be on YouTube? Hulu? BitTorrent? Newsflash, citizens: a simple, indoor ATSC antenna is all you need to watch WABC (and other broadcast channels), provided you live within range of the broadcast tower.

    Hands-on: UMID mbook BZ

The original UMID mbook M1 is a mixed bag of results. On hand it’s a very pocketable Windows XP clamshell with a 4.8-inch touchscreen, but the battery life and computing power isn’t that great. Boxee responds to NBC’s Jeff Zucker’s misleading statements to Congress re: Hulu-Boxee relationship

The world's worst manager, Jeff Zucker, who just so happens to be the president of NBC Universal, was on Capitol Hill today trying to persuade lawmakers to allow the proposed merger with Comcast go through. Interesting to note his take on Boxee's relationship with Hulu, which, you'll recall, has been something of a mess. Boxee adds Hulu compatibility, Hulu breaks said compatability, Boxee re-works its code so that Hulu works again, Hulu breaks compatability again, etc. And on and on and on.

Fox, Time Warner fight over more money than you can count. Let’s blame the Internet and stuff.

It has all the makings of a drama that no one could possibly care about: a giant corporation looking to make even more money than it already does; an even bigger corporation looking to stand firm and not be bullied into making any decision against its will; helpless consumers with no one to turn to, no altar to pray at; and the Internet. If you're a Time Warner subscriber you may loose all Fox-owned stations on Friday if certain conditions aren't meant, namely that Time Warner send Fox (News Corp.) several large sacks of money.

Because of the recession, y’all watched a lot of TV this year

The Media Democracy Survey tries to ascertain America's entertainment habits. It comes out every year, and this year's edition just went live. As you might image, the terrible economy played a major role in the way Americans went about their business this past year. In fact, it turns out that Americans now watch (well, watched in the past year) an average of 18 hours of TV per week, which is up from 16 hours from last year. And this is TV on TV, not Hulu or anything like that.
