iPhone 4’s retina display claim put under the math microscope

Raymond Soneira, president of monitor diagnostics firm DisplayMate, has said that Apple's retina display marketing is inaccurate, because he believes a display that truly makes pixels indistinguishable to the human eye would require a density in the vicinity of 477dpi. The iPhone 4 has 326dpi, and by now you might be surmising that Steve Jobs flat out lied when he said that the iPhone 4's pixels are too small for the human retina to discern from 12 inches away.
But not so fast, says Phil Plait from Discover, whose résumé includes calibrating a camera on board the Hubble space telescope. He's done the math too and finds that the 477 number applies only to people with perfect vision. For the vast majority of us, Steve's claim stands up to scrutiny; even folks with 20/20 eyesight wouldn't be able to tell where one pixel ends and another begins. Videos: Toyota’s amazing violin-playing robot

Toyota has never been known as an auto maker that's really active in the robotics area (as opposed to Honda, for example), at least when it comes to producing robots with high show value. There are two exceptions though: one is Winglet, the Segway-like robotic vehicle Toyota showed in 2008, and the other is a violin-playing humanoid that made its debut back in 2007.

New Japanese soccer robot shows the way to human-less sports is still long

The "RoboCup Japan Open 2010" [JP] is currently taking place in Osaka, and the world's biggest robot soccer tournament has attracted 225 teams from all over the world this time. Started in 1997, the official goal of the RoboCup is to have a team of humanoids play and defeat a team comprised of human soccer players during a "real" world soccer cup sometime around 2050.
But judging from what we can see currently, there is still a long way to go. Take the humanoid you can see on the picture and in the video embedded below, for example. It's taking part in the RoboCup 2010 Humanoid League's adult size class, meaning it competes against other robots that stand between 130 and 160cm tall.

Japan must have a solid number of customers willing to pay a ton of money for home-use robots, because otherwise there wouldn't be so many of them actually available for end users like you and me. Take ISAMARO [JP], for example, a new humanoid that hasn't been build for demo purposes, research etc. but for people who actually want to use him.

But I have to say the Tsukumo Robot Kingdom [JP] is much cooler, mainly because the shop is larger and offers more robots than its rival. The Robot Kingdom is located on the 4th floor of the Tsukumo PC Store II in central Akihabara.

Japan’s Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR) has unveiled robovie mR2 [JP], a cute desk robot that stands just 30cm tall and weighs 2kg. The cool thing is that users can place an iPod touch in his chest to control the robot (wirelessly via Wifi or by touching the screen).

Meet Tsutenkaku, a robot that looks like a tower (video)

Japan has a lot of different robots so why not develop one that looks like a tower - even if it may make no sense whatsoever? That's what a total of seven Japanese companies thought and built the Tsutenkaku Robotto [JP] (Tsutenkaku roughly translates to "tower that extends to the sky"). And as the name suggests, the robot is pretty tall: 170cm.

Pellermodel: Bandai lets you build a 3D figure of yourself

Even though I live in Japan, I admit I don't know anything about Origami and other techniques to build objects out of paper. Today is also the first time I heard of the Pellermodel concept, the art of creating "true 3D paper objects".
Now Bandai is planning to sell "Pellermodel" (brand name) kits, which make it possible for users to build a small, humanoid-like 3D object with one's own face on it (or that of anyone you like). All that users need to do is to upload a face picture, access Bandai's dedicated Pellermodel website [JP], print and attach the picture on the model's head. Your "3D" figure can then be pressed out in seconds.
