Qik charging $5 monthly for EVO 4G video chat (updated)
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsLast we thought, that mandatory $10 "premium data add-on" for Sprint's EVO 4G would additionally include YouTube and Qik video chat, and well, we may have been only half right. The gang at Android Guys have what's alleged to be a scan from Sprint's training materials, and according to one image, Qik's gonna cost you another $4.99 monthly via PayPal (not through the carrier) to use. We've reached out to see if we can confirm, but if true, it's a bit of a bummer to see the premiums continuing to add up. At least Fring's Skype video is still free, and as you can see in the video after the break, it works pretty well.
Update: We're now privy to the official May 26th edition of the Evo 4G launch guide and can confirm the $4.99 fee. While Sprint hasn't said anything publicly, it's looking like that fee will stick saving a last minute call from the governor.

TV viewers now refusing to watch SD content?
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsThere's a handy option in the DirecTV menu guide for "HDTV Channels." On the rare occasion when I'm actually sitting in front of the TV looking to "channel surf" (more like "menu surf" nowadays), it's only "HDTV channels" I'm concerned with. Nearly halfway through 2010, it has come to the point where, unless I absolutely have no other choice, I simply won't watch a network unless the program is in HD. Has it come really come to that? That, unless a show is in HD, you'll simply skip it?

HTC Mondrian with 1.3GHz Snapdragon detailed in leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM?
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsAs expected, the official-looking Windows Phone 7 OS ROM leaked over the weekend is already yielding results. Pictured above is an image extracted from the "oemavatar.cab." Now that could be a generic Windows Phone 7 image or it could be the HTC Mondrian already seen referenced by the 100MB file. The kids at XDA-Developers have also pieced together specs from an ongoing analysis of the registry and RGU files. So far they've spotted references to a 4.3-inch WVGA (480x800) display from Optrex and a 1.3GHz QSD8650A/B Snapdragon from Qualcomm -- a chipset, you might recall, supporting multi-mode UMTS and CDMA 3G connectivity. It's also packing a digital compass but seems to lack a keyboard. Mind you, none of this is absolute but it's very very intriguing.

Now I know that all you gen-Y'ers out there are all like "Windows? WTF! Mac FTW!" while you text on your Kins. Yes, that's right: you love Mac, so you bought a Kin.
And no doubt you agree that the only universally-liked featureone of the best features on the Kin was the included syncing software, "The Studio". So, when you got home and plugged your Kin into your Mac, I bet you were disappointed to find out that there was no simple way to get all those treasured party shots in iPhoto onto your shiny new toy. Well, strap on your best diaper, bud, coz I'm about to drop some news that will blow more than your mind... -

But in the latest episode of "Yes, Droid Really Does," we've got Motorola's darling solving a Lego-encased Cube in just over 24 seconds. This is a heads up for anyone running Windows Mobile 6.5:
A little over a month ago, an xda-developers member reported that his phone was waking up on its own and attempting to dial out international numbers. Soon after, other users started reporting the same thing, and after some investigation, it turned out that a virus was to blame. The virus is particularly alarming because it has the potential to cost the phone owner a lot of money.
The virus comes in the form of the game "3D Anti-Terrorist". DO NOT INSTALL THIS GAME.

Judge: Nintendo did not infringe on Wii Classic Controller, Wiimote

A company called Anascape, Ltd. sued Nintendo in 2008 for infringing on their patent for a controller similar to the Classic and Wiimote controllers. The Texas-based patent trolls won $21 million from Nintendo for their troubles thanks to a number of experts who attested that yes, the Anascape patents are pretty overarching and could feasibly apply to any controller ever made.

SketchNation: DIY iPad gaming plus a giveaway

If you've dreamt all your life of blowing up your third-grade teacher with spitball guns, your prayers have been answered. SketchNation is a surprisingly odd game that allows you to select all of the sprites in gameplay. You can set your own character sprite (a spitball gun, for example), the sprites for the bullets or spitballs, and even set up a boss image (your third-grade teacher). You then fly through a hail of bullets until you beat the game.
Apparently you can also blow up Walt Mossberg and David Pogue, for whatever reason. Those men are saints. Anyway, if you'd like to try it out, comment below. I'll send codes to five lucky, random readers. Viel Glück!
