iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G screens go head-to-head under the microscope

We got up pretty close to the iPhone 4's retina display in our review, but we can't say we got quite as close as PhD candidates Ryan White and Bryan Gauntt of Penn State University, who have kindly provided us with some images of the screen under a microscope (along with an iPhone 3G for comparison). According to their measurements, the iPhone 3G's pixels measure 13 x 40 microns, while the iPhone 4's measure 6.5 x 20 microns, which adds up to exactly four times as many pixels. Motorola Droid X stars in its clearest off-the-cuff preview yet (update: comparison shots!)
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsLet's be honest, we've seen more Droid X / Xtreme / Shadow spy shots than we can keep track of at this point, but for the latest batch, Mr. Blurrycam must've forgot his trademark blur filter and delivered us the cleanest images yet -- for shame, we know. Here's what the current owners of the super-secret phone, Gadget University, are claiming: 4.3-inch screen (it seems to jump between 4.3 and 4.1, depending on whom you ask), 1GHz Snapdragon processor, HDMI out, HD video recording, Android 2.1 with a "new version of Motoblur" (Ninjablur, you say?), and hardware navigation buttons. The Verizon logo is again unmistakably clear, and according to the site's "inside information," the Droid X (as the Model number says) is coming next month, with training beginning at the end of this month.

Video: Japanese doctors use iPad during surgery

As we all know by now, the iPad can be used in many ways, and we know it's a hit product. The Japanese seem to embrace the device, too (it came out in that country a few days ago). And for some strange reason, Japanese doctors in particular love the iPad. Last month, we reported about one living in Fukuoka in Southern Japan who x-rayed his device and posted a picture on his blog.

More BlackBerry Bold 9800 pics surface: AT&T and virtual keyboard in, SurePress out?

The Berry Fix has a plethora of pics for your perusal, chief among them a showing of the virtual keyboard to complement the physical QWERTY. We gotta say, every announce of good design sense lost on the 9670 must have been spent on this guy; we're really intrigued by this one. If that wasn't enough, we've got two more details that'll tickle your fancy: an AT&T splash screen for one, and claims from the article's author (via Twitter) that RIM's not using SurePress here. That'd actually be quite a relief, but until we get our hands on the sucker, let's just curb our enthusiasm, mkay?

Fujitsu to unveil improved color e-paper screen

Fujitsu Laboratories announced today that they will be unveiling a new version of their color electronic paper display at the company’s Fujitsu Forum exhibition in Tokyo next week. The new screen is a supposed to be a third brighter and has a contrast ratio of 7:1, three times that of the previous model. These improvements are mostly due to the use of a new liquid crystal material with superior reflective characteristics.

Google today announced on its blog that they have upgraded the mobile Image Search on Android 2.1 and iPhone OS 3.0+ devices.
It's a typically Google update, in that the revamp will provide more speed and less clutter -- two things that are always welcome.

Allegation: School district used laptop to take 400+ photos of student without permission

You'll recall that the Lower Merion School District, in Pennsylvania, had given students MacBooks so they could do their schoolwork. Fun. What wasn't fun, though, was that the school is alleged to have snapped photos of the students without their consent. The whole kerfluffle is wrangled in the legal system now, and one of the district's employees who had access to the images called it a "little LMSD soap opera." Replied another: "I know, I love it." Oh boy, not good for the school district.

Android 2.1 at Fault for Nexus One Screen Issues? Droid Owners Beware!

No doubt by now you've heard that the screen on Google's Nexus One is apparently worse than the screen on Motorola's Droid.
The story goes that images on the Nexus One aint be poppin' like they do on the Droid, and a study by DisplayMate apparently confirmed this.
But now that Droids have been updated to Android 2.1, users have begun to complain that images displayed on their Droids look about as good as they did in the Commander Keen days.

Another possible breakthrough for LCD TVs? Researchers at Japanese chemical company Teijin and Yamaguchi University claim they have developed a new technology that makes it possible halve the weight of LCD TVs. Conventional LCDs are based on silicon solid-state devices on glass substrates, which "sandwich" liquid crystals. These devices generate heat when used, prompting manufacturers to go for heat-resistant (heavy) glass substrates.
