Sega says Nintendo 3DS will bring back mature gamers. But let’s not confuse ‘mature’ games with ‘violent’ games.

Sega believes the Nintendo 3DS could be just the thing to win back the hearts and minds of older, more mature gamers, the implication being that your average 20-something doesn't want to play Mario Does His Taxes 8. Games like House of the Dead and Saint's Row were two of the game that Sega referred to in a recent interview.

Apple revises iOS rules on outside advertisers, cuts out Google, Adobe by implication

Apple and Google's newfound rivalry in the mobile advertising space was already pretty interesting to watch as it stood, and it looks like things just got more interesting still. As expected following Steve Jobs' comments at D8 last week, Apple has now revised its rules on advertising in iOS to allow outside advertisers to collect stats for ads, but the company has included some language in the new rules that seems to effectively cut out Google's AdMob. While it obviously doesn't mention Google by name, only "independent" advertising providers can collect tracking stats, and Apple says that any "advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent." That would seem to not only affect AdMob, but Adobe and Greystone's just-announced effort as well, considering it specifically mentions companies affiliated with "development environments other than Apple." Head on past the break for the complete relevant section.

Greenpeace: iPad could increase demand for ‘dirty coal power’

This may be the greatest sentence ever written in the English language: "As IT industry analysts label 2010 the 'Year of the Cloud,' a new report by Greenpeace shows how the launch of quintessential cloud computing devices like the Apple iPad raises fresh questions about how the Internet is powered and whether the IT sector will continue to fuel climate change by increasing demand for dirty coal power." Dirty Coal Power: on tour this summer (with special guest Limp Bizkit)! In other words, does the iPad hate freedom? Obviously.

Greenpeace will be at CES cutting a promo on anti-green companies

I've inexplicably become CrunchGear's go-to green writer. If there's a “green” tech story out there, I'm on the scene. Why, I don't know, especially because my attitude toward the environment is, “Meh, I'm lucky if I hit 70 years old, what do I care?” Don't tell that to Greenpeace though. The activists made famous by that Seinfeld episode will be at next month's CES (as will all of your friendly neighborhood CrunchGear writers) to give the lowdown on what companies are green and what companies are a bunch of jerks.

Verizon asks ‘if the iDoesn’t, what does?’

The "there's a map for that" ad was a pretty aggressive way to broadside AT&T and the iPhone, but it looks like Verizon's just getting warmed up. We're hearing that the carrier will be kicking off a major new campaign this evening during the Yankees-Angels game that'll feature "a very different look and a whole new attitude," calling out the "iDevice" (their words, not ours) for all the things it can't do. That's a bold offensive for a carrier that historically has lacked breadth and depth in its smartphone lineup, but with the big new Android releases coming down the pike, this might be perfect timing -- and a strong implication that we can seriously put those endless Verizon iPhone rumors to bed for a little while.

  • Who’s ‘right’ in the Net Neutrality debate?

Who’s ‘right’ in the Net Neutrality debate?

This past week saw the resurrection of Net Neutrality as a divisive issue. Some folks (people like Google, and, well, us) are in favor of Net Neutrality, while other folks (primarily the ISPs) are against it. Not long after the FCC announced its intentions, six Republican senators, three of which who received quite a lot of money from AT&T, proposed an amendment to a bill to stop the FCC in its tracks. The senators later rescinded their amendment, saying that they were now open to a “dialogue” with the FCC.

Always being ‘connected’ is ruining our way of life

It sure is great to live in the developed world. No having to worry about having enough to eat or finding clean drinking water or anything like that. Nope: we freak out when Twitter momentarily goes down, or when we can't use certain software on our phones. Or, conversely, we complain about the undue influence certain technologies have over our lives. We're all over the place.

For whatever reason, the knives are out for HP

It looks like the cool thing to do now is bash HP over its environmental record. Yesterday's Greepeace action was a huge story for several minutes, drawing attention, apparently, to the company's rubbish record with respect to various chemicals in its products. And today The Register has photos of shipping containers, used to ship things.

Let’s guess each other’s Social Security Numbers, for fun

True story: I didn't even know my Social Security Number until my freshman year of college, when it was used as my dorm building's PIN. Type in the PIN, and the little gate would open. It seemed a little odd at the time, yes, and today's news that, with a little elbow grease, someone can guess a person's Social Security Number quite easily, well, that doesn't exactly fill me with confidence vis-à-vis “the system.”
